Parker.) •Mr Webster defines a "hero’’ as “any man admired for his qualities or achievements and regarded as an ideal or model.” To its loss, the world will never read or hear about one Southern Stonewall who refused - to let formidable circumstances break down his courage to go on Frank H. Parker was not a Southern general in the Civil War nor a fighter pilot in Vietnam. He was in the mainstream of every day life, in which most earthlings are well acquainted Business, the support and training of a family and pressure were an integral part of each day. Pictures are true memorials and my mind and heart contain many In the present age of narcissisjn when people are giving themselves utmost attention and undue concentration, this human laid down a total framework of devotion and strength before his God, then his loving wife and family and others. existence, here was a father swimming with his children in the Catawba River, assuring the triad of boys and their sister that an unplarmed gulp of muddy river water wasn't ji»oing to kill them i Although Daddy was right there if they took two gulps!). A belief in the reality and vital life line of prayer was genuinely shown when his business never kept him from hauling his little herd to mid-week prayer service. A Gibralter trust in the truthfulness of the Bible turned the grease pit of his service station into a relief center for men wear)- with sin and undone by the heat of the day. An ingrained belief in the free enterprise system caused him to build a thriving wholesale distributing company which grew and expanded rapidly due to tedious work, faithfulness to back up service and an unswerving commitment of loyalty to his customers (who xvere also his friends). Frost bite surely could not have been too far away as those rugged hands endured the cold dealing with customers’ problems. Innumberable times he just stood there and let people talk, and talk and talk Every service station I entered (as an incessantly hungry cheese-

cracker or popcicle advocate) seemed to pen up to this kind route-man it’s problems and fears. While I pulled, nudged, and whimpered to get back in the truck and go. This equivalent to a tame and gentle ox said over and over "Just be patient, son!” ’ Accepting failure in business without resentment, ill will or proud excuses, but immediately using a tired body and mind to take the next step had to live in my memory a long time. Working double jobs going into the age of life when many are winding down to rest with the fruit of their labor was never easy. Aside from the overly required hours came the deepest hurts. Time and experiences xVith those he loved most were sapped away with the sheer physics of past debt and present care of a normal family. Mr. Blackwelder never doubted Frank would pay him hundreds of dollars of back rent and he didn’t need to. I’ll never forget a faithful xvife exultingly telling her youngest son. ““We drove to Concord to personally give Mr. Blackwelder his back rent from years before " His banker discovered the integrity of this undefeated soldier of life The dentist did not have to fill any cavities in the performance of this pure promiser. service stations' owners got their adjustments for the thousands of batteries that came factory inferior (but discovered too late to halt a wholesaler’s demise, losing trucks, warehouses, etc,). No one lost their money, literally no one. Even that which was personally lost was compensated by the providence of a very able and sympathetic Heavenly Father who works "all things” out for good to those who trust him. What was lost in business was overshadowed by what was gained in life. Rising early to get the coal stove producing what chilly boys want most before school was only what any father would do. However, opening the source of his strength and meditating upon the word of God in the early morning was unlike many well meaning heads-of-the-home who tell other people what to do but do not lead them to know the true and living God who is "acquainted with all our infirmities” and has tasted and lived on this earth with all its dark moments, even death itself. A father, along with an equivalent in the world of mothers, held up their children before the Grace of God daily. Their most accelerated prayers were that their children might escape sin’s harm and know the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone could save them and go with them through the mountains and valleys long after they had parted from their dearest on earth. This Stonewall made it through the truly hard crisis, the battles of the soul where no spectators were there promising huge rewards. To have given up would have been understood but to have endured proved there was a greater than Frank who lived his life through Him. As time put it’s commentary on the struggles of a firmly committed Christian, husband, father and selfless individual. I began to see that this earthly hero could be

measured by his degree of surrender to a Lord whose very life and strength flowed in him. In a 1981, a trust in the eternal Hero who died and rose again that all who believe in Him might have and know life, will never be out of style. Neither will the respect for parentsi, the true concern of parents for-the total welfare of their children, the appreciation of government and how individuals can make it work. Thanksgixring to Almighty God for his bounty of opportunity to use the gifts he has sovereignly afforded us etc., etc.... I’ll never forget the unselfish foreman of a machine shop who resigned to take two-thirds less salary that his small children might not grow up on a sidewalk in New York city but breathe more opening and appreciative of the world God created. Frank Parker is. at 70, a bonefide Hero. His legacy of selflessness, his faith lived out in the real world of blood, dust, tears, disappointment and joys keeps his son forever thanking God for a real father. In fact, he’s more than a father, a genuine hero that I will love and emulate all the days of my life. * The words of "Marvelous Grace of Our Loving Lord," “Amazing Grace,” “When We All Get to Heaven," plus many more great hymns of the faith were taught to me not as much in the pew as over the sound of a gear box being shifted back and forth in the cab of a battery truck winding its way through North and South Carolina. This honest deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir director, and down to earth victor will always be the supreme earthly commander of his little son That son remembers that formidable barriers and deep valleys mean nothing to the God of my father who has the Lord of a hero’s son
