apparent dissidents, operating within the confines of the Lakeland Community Education Association completely surprised the school board at its meeting last Tuesday evening, by posing two points heretofore not a point of arbitration between the negotiating teams of t|»e administration and the LCEA. According to Phil Metcalf, chairman of the LCEA negotiating team, 96 per cent of those teachers attending the meeting last Tuesday afternoon agreed to ratify terms of the salary and fringe benefit contract agreed upon earlier — but with the two points added. The two points would, L allow for either the school board of the LCEA to initiate renegotiations only in the areas of salary, extraduty pay and fringe benefits during the term of the contract if monies of the corporation either or decreases, and. 2. that a committee should be set up to review priorities in the budget formation, in short, to tell the elected school board how it should allot its expenditures at a budget-making loyel. There is little reason to expect either point to be agreed to by an equally determined school board. Meanwhile, no one can be sure there will be school at 8:15 a.m. Monday. January 5. Metcalf said
early this week a special meeting of members of the teachers' union would be held at the Wawasee High School commons at 3 p.m. Sunday. Jan. 4. to determine their next step: whether they would accept their contract as agreed to by the two negotiating teams, or whether they would insist on the inclusion of the two points of addendum. The former would mean classes as usual on Monday morning; the latter that there will be a walk-out of Lakeland teachers. School administrators and teachers throughout the state of Indiana will be watching.
