Indiana ice fishing forecast
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports portions of northern Indiana will have good to excellent ice fishing this winter while the central and southern sections could have good fishing if the weather is favorable for ice formation. Although many lakes and reservoirs provide Hoosiers with ice fishing opportunities, the following lakes are those selected by fisheries biologists as the best public fishing waters this winter. Northern Indiana Lake Wawasee is Indiana’s largest natural lake and has long had a reputation for fine ice fishing. Last winter ice fishermen had excellent luck catching northern pike and yellow perch. This year promises to be equally good. Bluegill fishing should also be good. Wawasee is a big lake and has big fish. Trying to find the fish is tough for the beginner, so follow the crowds. Where most anglers gather is where the fish can be found. Spear Lake is located just west of the Kosciusko County line on the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area. Spear Lake is a popular bluegill ice fishing spot. Bluegill in the seven inch range and redear eight inches long are common. The DNR has successfully developed a large northern pike population there. Shock Lake is also located on the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area and is another excellent spot for catching bluegill and redear. The bays on Lake James and Snow Lake, located three miles northwest of Angola in Steuben County, are traditionally good producers of bluegill, yellow perch and largemouth bass. Fishing is best as soon as the ice in the bays is safe. Two Steuben County Lakes that northern pike fishermen should keep in mind are Pigeon Lake, located three miles east of Angola, and Lake George, located seven miles north of Angola. Pigeon Lake should also produce nice catches of black crappie and bluegill while supplemental catches of bluegill, yellow perch and largemouth bass can be expected on Lake George.

Clear Lake, located six miles east of Fremont in Steuben County, annually produces good perch fishing and will be a good bet once again this season. Walleye are abundant in the lake, but the fishing outlook is only fair. Many of the walleye present have been stocked within the past two years and are not mature. Trout are stocked annually in Clear Lake and provide good fishing. Adams Lake, three miles northeast of Wolcottville in LaGrange County, has the potential to be the area’s hotspot for lunker yellow perch this season. A fisheries survey of the lake revealed a healthy perch population with numerous large fish present. Pretty Lake, three miles west of Stroh in LaGrange County, offers the ice fisherman a wide range <rf opportunities. Bluegill, yellow perch, largemouth bass and northern pike are present in good numbers. Trout are stocked annually and supply good fishing throughout the winter. Fishermen particularly interested in trout should try Lake of the Wool’s, three miles south of Stroh, and Lake Gage, three miles southeast of Orland. Fisheries surveys on these lakes also indicate good yellow perch populations. Willow Slough in Newton County should produce excellent results this winter Many large bluegill up to 10 inches are present along with some “keeper” bass. There are also northern pike and channel catfish which should interest some winter anglers. Fishermen should remember to check in at the office prior to fishing. Worster Lake is located seven miles south of South Bend in Saint Joseph County. This lake is on the Potato Creek State Recreation Area and is expected to produce excellent results. In addition to many eight-inch bluegill, legal sized bass will also be available. Black crappie up to 12 ihches could also be caught. Koontz Lake is located in Starke and Marshall Counties. Winter anglers on Koontz Lake will find bluegill up to 7.5 inches, redear up to 10 inches, largemouth bass and northern pike. Access is available off of SR 23 on the west shore. Lake Maxinkuckee in Marshall County is located at Culver. This lake is traditionally good in the winter for perch up to 11 inches and bluegill up to 10 inches. Crappie, rock bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass are also caught through the ice. The state maintains a public access site on the west shore. Lake Manitou in Fulton County is one mile east of Rochester. An ice fishing trip to Lake Manitou may result in catches of bluegill up to 8.5 inches, yellow perch up to 10.5 inches, black crappie up to 11.5 inches, redear up to 10 inches, largemouth bass or rock bass. A state-owned access site is located on the east shore.

Wolf Lake in Lake County is located northwest of Hammond. Bluegill up to 7.5 inches are commonly caught and should provide good sport for ice fishermen. Many largemouth bass and black crappie are also present. The City of Hammond maintains a park on the east shore for access. Loomis Lake in Porter County is two miles north of Valparaiso. The lake has good populations of bluegill, black crappie and largemouth bass. An occasional northern pike is also taken. Bear Lake in Noble County is located two miles southwest of Wolf Lake off Highway 109. It has a reputation for being a consistent producer of good bluegill ice fishing. The channel along the west shore is especially popular Bluegill in the seven to eight inch range are common. The lake also contains a good yellow perch population. Other notable spots for bluegill in the area around Bear Lake include High Lake, Crane Lake and lakes in the Chain-O’-Lakes State Park. Crooked Lake in Noble and Whitley Counties is located along SR 109 north of Columbia City and offers anglers a uniquely different ice fishing experience. The lake has some of Indiana’s finest cisco and trout fishing. Cisco, a relative of whitefish and trout, are found in only a few lakes in the area and Crooked Lake contains one of the largest cisco populations Cisco fishing is best immediately after freeze-up. Unlike most fish, cisco spawn in early winter. In Crooked Lake, they congregate in the shallow west end off the public access site in traditional spawning grounds. Cisco bite soft, so use sharp hooks. Even under the best conditions, most cisco fishermen lose more fish than they catch. The DNR annually stocks thousands of trout in Crooked Lake including brown, rainbow and lake trout. Most trout are taken also in the far west end and along the north shore. Central Indiana Brookville Reservoir is a 5,260acre man-made impoundment located in Union and Franklin Counties south of Liberty. A creel survey conducted this year indicated good populations of both crappie and walleye. Most of the crappie harvested were in the eight to 12 inch long range. The bulk of the walleye harvested were 12-16 inches long with some individuals reaching 26 inches in length. Some good size yellow perch were also caught, indicating a fair population of this species should be present for

winter anglers. Fishermen are cautioned that the ice is often thin on large reservoirs in central Indiana. Whitewater Lake is a 200-acre reservoir located in Whitewater State Park just south of Liberty. This lake was “renovated” in 1974 by the DNR and restocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, redear and channel catfish. The fishery has developed to the point where a large number of bluegill are a harvestable size and offer ice fishermen a very good season. Winter anglers may also catch an occasional channel catfish. This summer fisheries personnel and park officials reared 3.952 cagged catfish to legal size (10 inches). These fish were released in the lake this fall. Waveland Lake, located in Montgomery County, is a 358acre man-made impoundment. The lake is situated near SR 47 about one-half mile west of Waveland. The lake was stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish in 1970. In 1973, a selective renovation was conducted to remove a large part of the bluegill population. Since the selective renovation, both crappie and bluegill growth rates have improved and the harvest of both species has been exceptional. Fishing this winter is expected to be equally as good. Cataract Reservoir in OwenPutnam Counties is a 1,400-acre impoundment near the city of Cloverdale. A fisheries survey conducted this summer sampled several hundred crappie that averaged al >ut eight inches in length. The fish will be on the small side, but should provide a large amount of fishing opportunity for the winter angler. Ice fishermen may also catch an occasional walleye, channel catfish or largemouth bass. Glenn*Flint Lake, located in Putnam County about five miles northwest of Greencastle, is central Indiana’s newest public reservoir. The 371-acre impoundment was stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear, sunfish and channel catfish in 1975 and 1976. In the summer of 1980, anglers enjoyed good catches of quarter-pound bluegill and redear. These same kind of fish should be available to ice fishermen. Southern Indiana The ice fishing season in Southern Indiana usually extends from late December into early February. However, during mild winters it may be only two or three weeks long or even nonexistent. It is very important to be sure of the conditions of the ice in this part of the state before going ice fishing.
