Girls pulled through at Tippecanoe Vhlley

By SHARON STUCKMAN Thursday at Tippecanoe Valley the Wawasee girls’ team pulled out another win. Coach Brannock used a disciplinary measure when he said he felt the girls were a little over confident and began playing sloppy. The girls worked hard in the fourth quarter and defeated the Vikings. Lee Schacht made the first four points of the game. Bernice Bussard missed, but Virginia Arven rebounded and scored. Lonnie Black was fouled by Arven and scored one. Arven put the Valley within one on a rebound snot. A long shot by Bussard put Valley ahead 6-5, but Black got a swish shot and Wawasee led. Carleen Clampitt tied the score when she was fouled by Grace Stichter. Stichter put Wawasee ahead with a field goal. Vickie Mattix missed and Maude Packer rebounded. The ball rolled loose. Valley recovered and Tammy Cooper tied the game at 9. Schacht missed but Packer rebounded and scored. Valley lost the ball out of bounds and Tona Sellers made the last shot of the first quarter. Wawasee led 13-9. Wawasee was called for a travel at the beginning of the second quarter. Clampitt missed but Mattix rebounded and scored. Schacht scored two when she was fouled by Liz Bornman. Arven shot and put Valley within two, but Black got a quick score for Wawasee. Packer rebounded and passed to Schacht who missed, but Kathy Davis got the ball back and scored. Packer tied the ball up. got the tip and Sellers scored. Bussard scored to makelhe score 21-15. Schacht scored two when she was fouled by Bornman. Packer and Schacht

K of C holds basketball contest

The Knights 'of Columbus Council 6323 held its annual basketball free throw contest Saturday, Dec. 13, at Wawasee High School gym. The contest was open to boys and girls between the ages of 11

She scored one more when she stole the ball and was fouled by Arven. Mattix was fouled by Packer and hit one. Schacht was fouled and hit only one. Wawasee got the ball after a jump ball and Stichter scored. Myra Ruch rebounded and scored another one for Wawasee. Tilden got a nice basket and the first half ended. Wawasee 33 Valley 18. Some of the Warrior substitute players played the entire third quarter, after the starters couldn’t seem to hit or rebound. The Warrior girls failed to score in the third quarter. Carol and Cheryl Walker worked hard on defense for Wawasee. Mattix scored four, Tilden scored four and Arven two for Tippe. At the end of the third quarter the score was 33-28. Arven got the first basket in the fourth quarter Stichter put Wawasee ahead by five with a good basket. The Valley was again within three on a basket by Arven. Schacht rebounded and was fouled. The shot was good but was called back when someone jumped in. Schacht tied the ball up, Wawasee got the tip and Schacht scored. Black was fouled on a rebound and hit two free throws. Arven hit a jump shot and the score was 39-34. The Warriors lost the ball out of bounds and Bussard hit a layup. The Warriors took too long to bring the ball across and Mattix brought the Valley within one with three minutes left in the game. Stichter lost the ball to Bussard but Stieglitz stole it back for Wawasee. Black was fouled and scored one. Cooper missed

Cooper hit a long shot and the Valley was again within two points with 39 seconds left in the game. Tona Sellers hit one when she was fouled, Wawasee tied the ball up, got the tip and Stichter was fouled by Tilden. She hit one and Wawasee won the game 4642. JV Victories The junior varsity girls were also victorious over the Viking girls. Tami Granger got the first basket for Wawasee. Sharon Bohnstedt and Roaslie Rouch scored before Harrell scored for the Valley. Young, Eastlund and Granger rebounded well for Wawasee. At the end of the first quarter Wawasee lead 6-2. Rouch scored, Harrell scored on a rebound, Wawasee lost the ball on a jump and Ballamy made the score 8-6 with two free throws. The final score of the second quarter was 8-6. Young got a basket, Bohnstedt rebounded and Baker scored. Young was fouled by Foley and scored two. Foley made the score 14-8. Wawasee worked the ball under to Eastlund, who scored. Foley scored on a rebound and Eastlund scored again for Wawasee. Young stole the ball, scored and the Warriors lead 2010 at the end of the third quarter. Bohnstedt got a nice layup. Walker hit ‘ a free throw and Young got a basket for the Warriors in the fourth quarter. Harrell got the only Valley score. Baker, Young and Granger played defense for the Warriors, who won 25-12.

Speicher, 13, Milford; and Dan Enright, 14, North Webster. Hie five winners will compete in district competition in January. A regional and state competition will follow.

Warriors 3rd at invitational

By SHARON STUCKMAN Coach Welborn had hoped that the wrestling team could win first at their invitational on Saturday and at tTe break after the first round it appeared possible. As the day wore on Warsaw’s team passed the Warriors and came in second. However, Wawasee was close behind. Gary Gerencser won a first place for Wawasee and many other Warrior wrestlers placed well. At 98 pounds Lenny Stanfield of North Liberty placed first. Matt Snograss of Warsaw was second, Doug Jameson of Elkhart Central third, Jeff Carden of Wawasee fourth and Baron McDonald placed fifth. Gary Gerencser of Wawasee was the first place champion/iiK the 105 pound class. Defeating ' Tom Bruce of Fort Wayne Northrop, who placed second, by a pin in 2:22. Third place winner was Kregg Jones of Churubusco, with Steve Hatcher of Warsaw fourth and Elmhurst’s Dalen Spaw fifth. At 112 freshman, Dave Melendez of Wawasee lost only to Mark McClure of Northrop. McClure won first and Melendez took second. The third place winner was Troy Heiser of Warsaw. Jack Stuckey of Fort Wayne North Side took fourth and Mark Sherbondy of Elmhurst took fifth. Warsaw’s Scott Hutcherson was champion in the 119 pound class. Second place went to Don Cuney of Northrup. Gary Davis took third for Elmhurst and Jim Kalafat of North Liberty was fourth. Wawasee’s Jeff Glon won fifth. Wawasee’s Kevin Walker lost t only to Burt Kennedy of Elkhart Central, placing Kennedy first and Walker second. Kevin Cory .took third by defeating Louis Bouse from Warsaw, who took fourth. Cory is from Elmhurst. Brian Hallett of Northrup placed fifth. The 132 pound champ was Tim Rudynski of North Liberty. Brad Knapp, Churubusco, was second, Ken Allen of Warsaw third, Tim Miller from Elkhart Central fourth and Elmhurst’s Harold Durnell placed fifth. Warrior Oscar Hernandez took second when he was defeated by champion Chris Goddard of Northrup. Goddard defeated third place Jerome McKinney of North Side by a pin. Rob Coppes of Warsaw took fourth and Steve Hayes of North Liberty fifth. Dan Glass from Northrup was the first place winner at 145. Kennedy of Elkhart Central won second. Steve Kennedy defeated Wawasee’s Jim Salazar in the first .round. Jim defeated Tod Wetzel and placed fifth. Mike Hoover of Warsaw was third and Ron Klopfenstein of North Liberty came in fourth. At 155 Jon DeGrandchamp placed first, Jerry Harter took second and Wawasee’s Ben Black was third. Jim Whitehead of Warsaw was fourth and Dave Kirts of Elkhart Central was fifth. Joel Bales of Wawasee lost by only 4-0 and placed second in the 167 pound class. Todd Pairitz of Elkhart Central was champion. O Youth W Center Events

By JILL STANLEY The new winter schedule of fun for the Lakeland Youth Center was distributed to Lakeland Community School children yesterday (Tuesday). Additional copies are available at area stores, banks and at the youth center. Roller skating will be offered for students in kindergarten through fifth grade every Thursday starting January Bth through February 26, from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. at the Lakeland Youth Center. A small fee is included. The first holiday craft class will meet tomorrow, (Thursday) from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lakeland Youth Center. A slight fee will be charged to cover materials. A Valentine class will meet February 5 at the same time with the same small fee. For the children during Christmas vacation the youth center offers ping pong, basketball, air hockey and whatever game the kids supply. Free time for children kindergarten through second grade will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29. Also on December 29 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., kids third through fifth grade will have free time. On Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. free time is offered to children kindergarten through fifth grade. In the afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. free and open roller skating is available for youths kindergarten through fifth grade. For people who enjoy music and want to be in shape dancercise class begins on Monday, Jan. 12, and continues every Monday through March 10 from 8 to 9 p.m. at the center. Instructor Donna Johnson encourages selfexpression, basic exercise.and dance movements blending with music. There is a fee. Vigorous exercise is available at the youth center from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 to 10 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning January 12 through March 10 with Donna Johnson. This exercise class provides an effective fitness program with everyone eased into routine fitness and learning the purpose of each exercise. Adult volleyball is available beginning January 6 at the

Syracuse Junior High Gym from 7 to 9 p.m. This provides good exercise with teams formed each week for friendly competition. A slight fee is charged weekly. Judo class will be instructed by black belt Tim Stouder. The class meets Tuesdays beginning January 13 through March 3 from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. The class has a size limit. Judo is a form of selfdefense using the principals of balance and leverage. Stouder taught in the army and at the center previously. A new course offering is the micro wave class on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The three week class has a fee and will be taught by county extension officer Pat Rathbun. Meetings are February 11,18 and 25. Connie Smith from Smith Flower Shop, Milford, will instruct a flower arranging class at the youth center on Thursdays beginning January 15. The classes will continue through February 5 and will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at the center. Materials will be furnished each week making a fee necessary. Saturday basketball will begin February 14. Anyone interested in playing should have registered by Tuesday, Dec. 16. A fee includes a shirt and award. Syracuse will practice and play from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Syracuse Elementary gym; North Webster will play at the North Webster gym and Milford residents will play at 10 a.m. at the junior high school gym.
