Rebounds, fouls were crucial against Memorial's Chargers

By SHARON STUCKMAN At Elkhart Northside gym on Saturday the Warriors had some problems, the biggest being the remarkable outside shooting of the Chargers and lost 70-61. Tom Gary scored four points for Memorial and Geiger gave Wawasee two with free throws. Long collected a foul and Fulmer put the Chargers ahead by four. Long hit a basket and then committed his second personal foul. Johnson scored on a rebound and Long scored on his own rebound. Powers put Memorial ahead by four but Geiger cut that lead. Gary rebounded when Johnson missed and scored. Long’s shot was off and Geiger was fouled, but missed. Kent Stichter stole the ball, Long put Wawasee within two, Memorial missed and Stichter tied the score at 12. Lewis made good on a three point play when he was fouled by Davis. Davis was then fouled and he cut the lead to two, but Lewis hit another long shot for the Chargers. Long missed and the Chargers passed directly to Granitz who scored. The score at the end of the first quarter 19-13. Lewis scored on a tip in at the beginning of the second quarter. Geiger scored two when he was

BOXIN6 *•** By Pete FrttcMe WASHINGTON, D. C. - Roberto Duran shocked millions. especially devoted fans, when he quit in the eighth round of his second fight with Sugar Ray Leonard. One suspects Duran, with much Latin macho, knew he wouldn’t win the fight-and couldn’t bear to be seen on television battered about in the late rounds. Other fighters have quit, and it really isn’t new. Muhammad Ali wanted to quit in his first fight for the title against Sonny Liston, but was talked out of it in his corner. Liston then quit. Duran says he had stomach cramps and was too weak to go on. And one must accept that explanation, in part. He certainly hadn’t taken a bad beating at the time of his decision, and was very much in the fight. On all three cards, the scoring was close. What leads one to the conclusion he knew he wouldn't win is his retirement statement immediately after the fight. He’s almost 30 and beyond his peak. Sugar Ray, again the welter champ, is still coming on, and is under 25, the usual peak age of fighters.

hard man to hold down, shooting long shots. In the fourth quarter the Warrior cut the lead to five with baskets by Brian Walls, Kevin Smith and Pat Hare. Fouls cost the Warriors and Memorial hit well from the line. Dave Workman and Dave Roberts worked hard getting rebounds, but the ball wouldn’t seem to go through the basket on the Wawasee end of the court. The Chargers won 72-60. This Saturday the Warriors travel to Triton.

The guess is that Roberto took this second fight primarily for the $8 million he would earn (a good enough reason). And who can say it wasn’t a smart decision? Too many fighters go on too long. In retrospect, Duran put on a tremendous performance in beating Leonard in Montreal earlier this year. He couki never top that. No one is likely to administer another beating to Leonard any time soon. igk El.' Simpson tore a knee ligament during a scrimmage with Winthrop College at Catawba College’s Goodman Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 4. He underwent surgery at Rowa Memorial Hospital on Wednesday morning, Nov. 5. He is the second Tribe starter lost for the entire season. Point guard Art Rose, also a sophomore, cracked a vertebrae in a September auto accident. They were both to be Catawba starters, defending Carolinas conference champions. They will have three years of' eligibilityafter the season. “We were real pleased with the scrimmage except for the fact we lost Simpson,” said Coach Moir. “It happened on a fast break. He got a long pass and was close to the end line. He planted to try to keep from going out of bounds. He was moving so fast and stopped so quick, he twisted his knee.” Simpson averaged 9.1 points and 5.5 rebounds in 28 games as a freshman.
