Teamwork gives Warriors 72-60 victory over Panthers

By SHARON STUCKMAN When North Wood’s defense closed in and held Long's scoring down Kent Stichter and Brian Geiger came through for the Warriors, Wawasee played total teamwork and were rewarded with a victory. Panther Coach, Tom Firestone, showed his displeasure with the progress of the game by kicking the bleachers at the North Wood bench. Todd Beer scored the first two pionts of the game for North Wood when he was fouled by Geiger. Wawasee missed and Mike Yeater put the Panthers ahead by four. Geiger got the first five Warrior points. Beer scored a field gpai for North Wood but Locke ppt Wawasee back in the lead. Beer gave Wawasee back the ball with a foul and Long scored. Stookey stole the ball after a Geiger rebound, scored and cut the Warrior lead to one. Troup missed two in a row and Alfano put North Wood ahead but a nice basket by Kent Stichter and a three point play by Locke made the score 14-10. Alfano was open under the basket to score for the Panthers. Troup scored two field goals and Weaver of North Wood scored. Geiger was fouled by Bigler and hit two. At the end of the first quarter Wawasee led 20-14. North Wood got the second quarter tip, but missed the shot. Davis rebounded and Geiger scored one when he was fouled. By SHARON STI CKMA.N At Rochester on Thursday Wawasee came up with six pins on varsity and five from the junior varsity team. Wrestling 98, Jeff Carden pinned Dave Johnson in 3:13. Gary Gerencser got a quick pin against 105 pound Andy Rude in 42 seconds. In the 112 pound class Melendez defeated Bitterling 112. Juan Roa, wrestling 119, was defeated by Jim Heckathron 14-0. Jeff Glon pinned Tom Rude in 2:31 at 126. At 132 Ken Turner pinned Mike Metzger in the third period. Oscar Hernandez defeated Kenny Langley 6-1. Jones is in his second year at the helm of the Warrior team and pulled off the evening’s win. Firestone, a Syracuse native, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Firestone.

Long was called for an offensive foul, which took Riley to the line. He scored two and Wawasee led was only two. Locke made the score 27-23 with a quick basket. Long rebounded, missed the shot, but scored two when he was fouled. Davis blocked a Panther shot and Koble scored for the Warriors. Weaver hit a swish shot and Stichter was fouled by Riley on the rebound and scored two. Troup stole the ball and Long got three points as he was fouled by Weaver Troup hit another basket in the second quarter and Wawasee‘led at halftime 38-25. Troup scored first in the sconed half with a jump shot. The Panthers worked the ball under to Beer, who scored. Austin scored and Beer cut the Wawasee lead to nine. The Warriors lost the ball out of bounds and Alfano hit a long shot. Long was fouled and hit only one. Locke got the ballback but missed, Davis rebounded and passed to Stichter, who scored. The 4 Warriors again led by 10, but Alfano hit two field goals to make the score 43-37. Stichter scored, the Panthers worked the ball in to Yeater who scored. Geiger lost the ball out of bounds. Weaver scored and was fouled by Locke. He hit the free throw and the score was 45-42. Geiger hit two free throws when he was fouled by Alfano. Weaver threw the ball out of bounds and Long hit one, as

The team won by a score of SO--17. The junior varsity team won 4022. Rob DeSomer. Ron Martin, Chris Beezely, Todd Brunner and Jason Keim ca.,e up with pins for Wawasee. Steve Dunithan won 7-6, Mike Hernandez won by a score of 9-5 and Michael Cavendar won 12-2. The dual meet previously scheduled for Thursday against Concord has been postponed to December 22. Area fans will have a chance to see varsity wrestlers in action Saturday at Wawasee in the second annual Wawasee invitational.

Alfano committed his second foul. Yeater scored four in a row to bring North Wood within two. Long hit from the top of the key, Beer scored and at the end of the third quarter North Wood trailed by only two, 50-48. North Wood had two chances to tie the score at the beginning of the fourth quarter but Beer missed and Yeater missed and fouled Geiger who scored two for Wawasee. Beer missed but Alfano got the ball and scored. Stichter hit a “swish” shot, Beer was called for a charging foul. Long missed but Stichter rebounded and scored. Austin fouled Koble on the rebound and Koble hit one. Austin was called for an offensive foul and Stichter made the score 59-50. Riley raised the Panther score with a nice basket. Stichter was fouled by Curtis and hit two, but on the next play Stichter fouled Beer, who scored two. Geiger missed and Stookey scored to put the Panthers within five. A foul was called on Riley and he picked up a technical foul also. Locke missed one and Long scored one. Riley committed another foul, this time against Troup, who scored. Beer fouled out when he connected with Koble on the rebound. Koble raised the score 65-56, Geiger stole the ball and scored two. Wawasee got two more on a goal tending call. Alfano scored with 44 seconds left. Stichter was fouled and scored two more. North Wood lost the ball out of bounds and Kurt Stichter was fouled and hit one. Weaver made the last basket of the game and Wawasee won 72-60. JV Stopped The junior varsity trailed by only two at the end for the first quarter, but made only five points in the second quarter. The third quarter score was 38-28. The Warriors lost 58-38. Dave Roberts led the scoring with 12, Kevin Smith had 10 points, Ron Spunar 8, Brian Kistler 6 and Pat Hare 2. CHANGE IN DATE FOR WRESTLING MATCH The Wawasee-Concord wrestling match slated for tomorrow (Thursday) at Concord had been canceled. It will be re-scheduled for Monday, Dec. 22, at Concord al 7 p.m. Freshmen defeat CN The Wawasee freshman basketball team defeated Central Noble 47-31 in a game played last Thursday on the Wildcat's home floor. Leading the scoring attack for the young Warriors were Steve White with nine and John Vitaniemi, Kim Zurcher and Joe Rhoades each scored eight. Cochard was high for the night as a total of 15 points for Central Noble. The freshman team now has a record of 3-1 for the season. The reserve team won its game 20-18 to keep a spotless 4-0 record.

20th ranked Lions learn to respect Wawasee Warriors

By SHARON STUCKMAN A fired tip Wawasee wrestling team went to Bremen Tuesday to win and although the Lions were ranked number 20 in the state they came off the mat with respect for Wawasee. The first match, between Jeff Carden of Wawasee and Ron Bonduart of Bremen ended in a draw, 2-2. At 105 Gary Gerencser pinned Bremen’s Aquayo in 1:23. Freshman, Dave Melendez wrestled well against Paul Taylor, who won for Bremen 4-2. Just as the buzzer went off in the first period of the 119 pound class Wawasee’s Jeff Glon pinned Dave Kapke. Warrior Kevin Walker, wrestling 126, defeated John Lawmaster by a score of 9-4 in Kevin’s first match back to the team after a broken ankle. Senior Alan Sherman got a pin for Wawasee against Mike Hundt at 132. In a tough match at 138 Wawasee’s Oscar Hernandez defeated Todd Hundt 2-0. The 145 pound match was a clsoe one and Wawasee’s Jim Salzar lost by only one point to Mark Forte by a score of 3-2. Sophomore Ben Black matched muscle for muscle with a more experienced Scott Main but lost by a pin with 41 seconds left. At 167 Joel Bales of Wawasee used his bridge and speed to good advantage but lost to sneior Todd Hand 7-4. John

North Wood stops Wawasee in heartbreaking overtime

The Wawasee High School ' girls’ basketball team lost a heartbreaker 53-51 to eighth ranked North Wood Monday night in a triple overtime. Grace Stichter led the Warrior attack with 16 points and Lonnie Black had 11 points. The Warriors won the battle of the rebounds, pulling down 43 while North Wood got 31. Dinah Stieglitz and Grace Stichter each pulled down nine. North Wood was led by Ann Van Dyke, the six foot, four inch standout, who scored 14 points, blocked nine shots and pulled down 19 rebounds. Also in double figures for North Wood was Brenda Ervin with Iftpoints. Wawasee was on top 14-10 at the end of the first stanza but fell short at half-time 20-23. A strong third quarter put Brannock's girls on top 38-33 at the buzzer. The game was tied at 44 at the final buzzer. Each team scored four in the first overtime and two in the second overtime with North Wood scoring three in the final overtime and Wawasee only scoring one. Second annual wrestling invitational at Wawasee On Saturday, Dec. 13, Wawasee will host its second annual invitational. Other teams attending will be Warsaw, Fort Wayne Northrup, North Liberty, Fort Wayne Northside, Churubusco. Fort Wayne Elmhurst and Elkhart Central. Wrestling will begin at 9 a .m. The championship round is scheduled to start at 4:30. Last year Arnold Garza was a first place champion for Wawasee. Warrior Terry Rinker took second in the 119 pound class. Gary Gerencser and Kevin Walker of Wawasee will be back this year for the Warriors. Both wrestlers won third in last year’s tourney. Another returning winner for Wawasee will be Jeff Glon, who took fourth last year. Coach Welborn feels his team is strong and his wrestlers are ready for a first place win.

Black was again in double figures with 15 points. Dinah Stieglitz hit for 13 points and Myra Ruch scored 12. Stieglitz pulled down 15 rebounds and Black pulled down 12 rebounds. The score was tied at 7 all at the end of the first stanza and Wabash was on top 20-15 at the end of the half. Wawasee was only down one 23-24 at the end of the third quarter. By SHARON STUCKMAN At the North Wood Junior Varsity Invitational on Saturday, the Warriors wrestling team had two first place winners and four second place winners out of the eight participants. In the 98 pound class Rob DeSomer of Wawasee won a second, pinning David Filson in 50 seconds in the second round. Rob lost by only 3 to Andy Bayak of Goshen, who won first. Brent Hartmen of North Wood won third. At 105 Jeff Fervida of North Wood won first. Greg Stahley of Goshen second and Mike Shireman of Plymouth won third. Juan Roa of Wawasee won second in the 112 pound class. Juan pinned Adam Marker of Goshen and lost to champion, Fred Johnson of North Wood by only three. Steve Henderson of Elkhart Memorial took third. The junior varsity game will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the varsity match slated for 8 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. There will be a pre-sale of student tickets on Friday for $1 at the athletic office. Tickets at the door are $2. Students who plan to ride the fan bus must purchase a ticket at the high school or one of the junior highs for sl.
