Christmas is the celebration of God coming to earth
By REV. MAXIMILIAN KORECKI O.F.M. Conv. What is the true meaning of Christmas? At first glance, not a really profound question. The ture meaning of Christmas is a simple matter of historical record. Christmas is the celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ, founder of the largest religion in the world, called in its most general sense, Christianity. That birthday is celebrated on December 25th, not because the excact day (or year for that matter) of the miracle of the Bethlehem is documented but because the Catholic Church has for centuries chosen this date to express faith in the historical reality of Him around whose birth date our very calendar and way of dating history is based. (A.D. stands for Anno Domini, Latin for 'Year of the Lord’. B.C. stands for the English, ‘Before Christ’.) When the perennial quesiton, 'What is the true meaning of Christmas?’ is asked, Jhe obvious historical answer not usually what is sought. It is the implications of the historical fact of Jesus’ birth that' the inquirer is looking for. But even the basic theological implications are pretty much a matter of record. By and large, all Christian churches agree on the significance of that historic and historical birth. It is precisely because of its significance that the Church of whatever Christian denomination celebrates it. The Christian chruch . celebrates Christmas because Church choir to present special Christmas service The Nappanee Missionary Church Choir will give a candlelight Christmas Service, . Sunday evening, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. A story of Christmas, "Out of Darkness” by Lois Walfrid Johnson will be presented in word and song. This is a view of the birth and mission of Christ as seen through the eyes of a shepherd. The narrative takes a look at the events surrounding the birth of Christ and gives the listener the feeling of being present for these events. The narrative ends with response to Christ as the Light of the World. The church is located at 151 S. Locke St., Nappanee, and the public is welcome to attend.

Jesus was not only a man. Jesus is also God. Christmas is the celebration of God coming to earth. Christmas celebrates God, riot just taking on the appearance of man, not just becoming like man but actually becoming man, a particular man — Jesus, son of Mary, of Bethlehem and Nazareth, and at the same time continuing to be God. The fact of the God of the universe shrinking Himself to the helpless form of a human infant would be enough reason for the human race to be honored and take note. But the celebration is about more than that. The Son of God comes to earth as a savior, in fulfillment of thousands of years of longing expectation. Jesus, the carpenter’s son is the Messiah of the Hebrew nation and of the world. | God makes Himself man because only He can reconcile man to Himself. But yet, man must be part of that action by which he is reinstated as God’s friend, and (in a term that gives a better understanding to the depth and tenderness of the relationship) as God’s child Man must be intirhately involved in the process, in the person of Christ and in every person, because it was man who brought about the alienation. By the sin of Adam and Eve, the parents of the human race, and by every personal sin stemming from that original sin, man rejected God’s fatherhood and friendship, cut himself off from his heavenly inheritance, and slammed the gates of heaven shut, gates which could be unlocked only from the inside. When Jesus came to the sleepy and sleeping town of Bethlehem nearly 2,000 years ago, He came as a redeemer. The Son of God became ‘Son of Man’ to pay the price of man’s ancient and modern ingratitude. God the Son &ame to proclaim the love of God the Father. He came as an example of the necessary, active role of man in his own salvation. By Jesus’ life, death on the cross and resurrection, He reopened the gates of heaven closed by sin to enable man to come home again. This miracle of the ages, this focal point of all history is called the Incarnation, literlly the ‘enfleshment’ of God. It is a miracle which not only accomplishes the redemption of man, made worthless to himself and to heaven by his own selfishness, but it is a miracle which teaches the way to personally accept that undeserved bonanza of God’s love. The Savior comes

proclaiming, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” God joins Himself to man to teach that man must join himself to God to partake of redemption. Bethlehem teaches that salvation is a matter of time and place, of here and now, as well as of eternity. God becomes a particular person in history to teach the salvation of all as a matter of the involvement of each individual personally. The Messiah comes as Jesus the Jew to fulfill the promise of salvation through the Chosen People of God. Divinity joins to humanity and teaches: These are the two great commandments: love God and love neighbor. And the two commandments become one, inseparable. Our Lord rejects the popular phrases so often repeated, "I don’t need to go to church, I can worhsip God in my heart.” and “It doesn’t matter what church you go to, as long as you go.” The God of the universe becomes a particular man, in a particular time and place, part of a particular people to reveal His particular plan for mankind and to show His particular love for each of us in particular. The only fitting celebration for the entrance of the Lord of the universe into human history is to listen to His teaching, to embrace Him and His Gospel. The meaning of Christmas is the invitation that the Holy Child extends to each of us to come home for Christmas, to enter more deeply into the life of God and the life of God’s People on earth. He comes to teach that the two cannot be separated. The true meaning of Christmas? It is the celebration of a faith community, the People of God, rejoicing in the love of the Father manifested in the Son. It is the Family of God living the great double commandment and inviting all to share the joy and peace which the world cannot give. The gates of heaven are brought down to earth and become the doors of the Church flung open for all to hear the invitation: COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. * The snow had begun in the £ « gloaming, f | And busily all the night £ o Had been heaping field and £ | highway £ o With a silence deep and £ o white. £ 5 —James Russell Lowell £

Speaking words of wisdom
By G. EDWARD GEANS Minister 11)6 celebration of Christmas each year seems to become more and more commercial and secular. The practices adopted by many people border on the profame and the sacrilegious. Flaming dessert served to WMS The WMS of the Milford First Brethren Church met in the home of Mrs. Ronald Brown with 13 members and three guests, Myrtle Felkner, Mrs. Bruce Mathews and Mrs. Eugene Miller, present. Many festive decorations adorned the house among which was a pathway to the house decorated in luminarios, a beautifully decorated tree and many lighted candles. The meeting opened with the hostess serving a flaming dessert with everyone singing “Deck the Halls”. President Mrs. Jerry Leiter opened the business meeting with a prayer and read “The Story of the Christmas Guest” as retold by Helen Steiner Rice. It was mentioned that a sewing day would be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 9 a m. in the home of Mrs. Leiter. Mrs. Paul Mathews then gave a presentation of “Candles — As We Know Them”. She stressed that many families have family traditions involving candles. She also pointed out various countries and their customs with candles. A Christmas sermonette entitled “O Guiding Light” was given with the singing of “Silent Night Holy Night” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem”. An offering was taken to be sent to Riverside Christian School in Kentucky. The rest of the evening was spent making Christmas candles for residents at Loving Care Nursing Home. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the home of Mrs. Paul Tinkel with Mrs. Jim Beer as the leader. Christmas concert at Calvary The Chancel Choir of the Calvary Church in Syracuse will be presenting their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 14,at8p.m. Many songs of the season will be sung including, “The Many Moods of Christmas,” “Mary’s Baby” and “The First Christmas Carol.” Dr. Robert L. Jones is the director of the choir and the organist is Mrs. Diana Steele. Refreshments will be served in the church parlor following the concert. The public is invited to attend.

People get drunk. Family quarrels erupt. Tempers run wild. Money is wasted. And somewhere behind the turmoil and tinsel, the Bethlehem cradle is all but forgotten. It is no wonder, therefore, that the sincere Christian might question the wisdom of participating in a holiday celebration which may seem to be nothing more than a well merchandised fiasco. This frustration, along with the many Bible passages which speak of God’s hatred of idolatry and pagan practices, has caused many Christians to raise second thoughts about the ethics of observing Christmas. Since the Bible gives no definitive command regarding the celebration of Christ’s birth, we need to carefully examine these issues over which all sincere Christians are concerned. Perhaps the following thoughts will help us to put Christmas in perspective. 1. Jesus observed and participated in human ceremonies which had no Scriptural foundation. Jesus taught in the synagogue during His ministry. Yet there is no reference to synagogues in the Old Testament. And what New Testament references we do have, it is apparent that the policies and practices in many synagogues were corrupt and vain. Jesus also attended the feast of dedication (John 10:22), which was of human origin after the completion of the Old Testament. The Bible teaches that neither the observance or non-observance of a day is anything, but that each day is to be lived for the Lord (Romans 14:5-6).

2. The date of Christ’s birth is not given. Christians, therefore, are not limited to a special day to express gratitude to God for His unspeakable gift. 3. The taking on of human form by Christ is a vital teaching of Scripture. There is value in praising God for becoming man. It is a cardinal doctrine of the Christian faith, generally speaking, cultists who deny the deity of Christ discourage any observance of the birth of Christ. 4. Satan is able to abuse and corrupt that which is precious and holy. The idea of celebrating the coming of Christ to earth can be a pure form of Christian praise. But Satan can take this celebration and turn it into a diluted mixture of Christianity, humanism, politics, commerce and culture. 5. “To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure” (Titus 1:15). “Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon . . .” (Colossians2:l6). Each Christian must decide according to personal conscience. And each Christian that chooses to celebrate Christmas should carefully sift through the secular rubble and cherish the real meaning of Christmas. While there is no commande to observe Christmas, we are exhorted to praise God for His unspeakable gift. With the attention of the world focused on the birth of Christ, believers havfc an opportune time to present the message, "Today in the city of David there has been bom for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke2:ll).
A letter from the Cancer Society chairman was read. They’re soliciting help as drivers to take cancer patients to treatment centers.
