Three major holidays
By F. WAYNE LAWSON Pastor Bethany Church Os The Brethren In just a little over a month at the end of each year we in America celebrate three major holidays. (Holiday is a shortened form of “holy-day”). Two of these, Thanksgiving and Christmas are very directly related to the Christian faith. New Year’s Day is not so Obviously a holy day, but it too has its religious implications. Sometimes we may wish these days were spread out over the year a little more because they tend to get in the way of each other when they are so close together. Indeed, Thanksgiving is more and more getting pushed aside in favor of Christmas. Not many years ago, Christmas was not even thought of much before Thanksgiving was past. This certainly is no longer true. Without a doubt, Christmas is the most lengthy and the most celebrated holiday by most people in America. It does deserve our major ■ attention because it is so important to the Christian faith. It gives recognition to a special event in history. That Christian belief that a baby was born into the world as God’s special gift to humanity. Christians believe this to be the very Son of God, God Himself. Why did God send such a person? He did it because the human perception of His nature was very inadequate. He felt a need for a closer and more intimate contact with His human children. So, “when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem..." (Galations 4:4) A small boy stood before the picture of his absent father and said to his mother, “I wish he would step right out of that picture.” In a sense that is what God did. He came into the world in human flesh - in the form of His Son Jesus Christ. This is why Christians celebrate Christmas. The Scriptures tell us that Jesus is “Emmanuel... God with us." (Isaiah 7:14) We can now know what God is like. He is like Jesus Christ. “You have an advantage” said a leader of the Renaissance Movement in China many years ago, “in that all the ideas of Christianity have become inbodied in a Person.” How much easier it is to believe in God and have faith in Him because we have a living example of what He is like. He is like Jesus Christ. The birth of a baby can be a most enjoyable experience. Celebrating the birth of God’s Son is a joyous experience indeed. No

wonder we sing "Hallelujah” at Christmas time. Someone has pointed out that it would be entirely correct to translate “Hallelujah” as “Hurrah for God.” Hurrah for God who was so wise and generous in sending His Son Jesus Christ to bless humanity. Sometimes I think it might be better if we could celebrate Thanksgiving Day after Christmas. Maybe it wouldn’t be so likely to get crowded out there. And, we might very well be better prepared to be really grateful. What could cause us to be really thankful to God than to comprehend the meaning of Christmas? A natural expression would be to thank God for all His wisdom and goodness. Then, sing with the Psalmist “give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever! ” (Psalm 107:1) Revival begins in Syracuse Both the Warsaw and Syracuse Churches of the Nazarene are enjoying a steady growth and increasing their activities. Rev. Theron Hanes of Warsaw will serve as evangelist in a week long revival meeting at the Syracuse Church of the Nazarene, 312 S. Harrison St. The revival began yesterday, Dec. 2, and will continue through Sunday, Dec. 7. Services start at 7 p.m. evenings and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Rev. Hanes had successful pastorates in Bristol and North Manchester. He is presently Warsaw's Church of the Nazarene pastor, which is one of the fastest growing churches in northeastern Indiana. A well-known area song evangelist. Rev. C. Earl Lykins, is in charge of music. Every one is welcome to attend.

WILLIAM E. McMANUS Bishop
Bishop McManus to celebrate feast at Milford church Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Fourth and Main Streets, Milford, has been advised that the Most Reverend William E. McManus, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, will be present for the celeb-ation of its patronal feast. The actual feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe this year falls on Friday, Dec. 12, and there will be an evening mass for the occasion. The official parish celebration will be at the noon mass on Sunday, Dec. 14, when Bishop McManus will be the principal celebrant for the noon Eucharistic Liturgy. Additional plans are being made for the afternoon following the worship service. A nine-day period of spiritual preparation for the feast, a novena, will be held in the church and in the homes of parishioners from December 3 to 11. The December 14 mass will be mainly in Spanish with some parts in English. The mass and the novena, like all services at the church, are open to the public.

have in which to project our dreams, our values and our delights. On occasion, however, our pretend worlds can expose our weaknesses rather than our strengths. The saga of J.R. is typical. It is unbelieavable that so many people could become involved in a fictitious murder plot on television and at the same time almost totally ignore the hatred and bitterness that are very much a part of the very real world. Is it out of a sense of futility, restlessness, rebellion or sheer folly that sane men and women are driven to fantasy worlds that act out and often glorify the very evils we are trying to bring to an end in our real world 7 Perhaps our pretend dramas on the movie screen serve only to tease and tempt a human passion that never can be satisfied and that can only lead to despair, hopelessness and moral suicide. The Bible says “A tranquil heart is life to the body, but passion is rottenness to the bones” (Proverbs 14:30). J.R. and Dallas might never be cancelled. But the show and others like it, will never cancel out the hunger of the human soul. For that matter, there isn’t a “make believe’ world anywhere that can satisfy the human heart. Only Jesus can satisfy. He is no fantasy. He is real. May we seek Him with all our heart, mind and soul. “The mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on folly;; (Proverbs 15;14). The holiday season is upon us once more, and no matter what holiday we celebrate, there are lessons in it for all of us. Stores and streets are crowded and tempers are short; and yet regardless of whether we observe Christmas, Chanukah or whatever, there is no better time of year to practice a little more love, kindness and patience than we normally do. This is in accordance with the teachings at your House of Worship, no matter what it is, and this is a good time to heed them; for they can help you form good habits that you may retain the whole yeSr ‘round. In any case, a loving spirit will do more than all the lights, decorations or candles to bring real joy and happiness into your home and your life during the coming holiday season.
