First home game a thriller

By SHARON STOCKMAN The Warrior’s first game on their home turned out to be very close in the final few minutes, but Fairfield came away with a twopoint victory, 66-64. Spirit was high at Wawasee as the game began. Fairfield got the opening tip, Long tied up the ball, but the Falcons again got the tip. Miller shot and missed and Kent Stichter rebounded, where he was fouled. The ball rolled loose, Fairfield recovered but Stichter stole it and Long shot and missed He was fouled and Wawasee had the ball out of bounds. Troup missed a field goal but Wawasee stole the ball again and Brian Geiger made the first basket of the game. Steve Lantz put Fairfield on the board. Geiger made his second on a steal by Stichter to put Wawasee ahead 42. Cripe scored for Fairfield and then Geiger hit his third basket of the night. Lantz hit for Fairfield to tie the score and Locke broke the tie. The Falcons missed and Stichter widened the Warrior lead to four. Kauffman was open underneath and scored for Fairfield. Troyer rebounded and Kauffman tied the score. The ball rolled loose and Geiger fouled attempting to save it for the Warriors, which gave the ball to Fairfield and Kauffman hit two free throws when a foul was called on Kent Stichter, putting Fairfield in the lead. A jump ball gave possession to the Falcons and Kauffman scored. Geiger was fouled but missed the free throw and Locke stole the ball for Wawasee. Long was fouled by Kauffman and hit both free throws to make the score 1412. Lantz score for Fairfield and then Long hit a field goal. The first quarter ended 16-14, Fairfield leading. Fairfield got the second quarter tip but traveled. Geiger then traveled to give the ball back to the Falcons, who lost it out of bounds and Locke hit for Wawasee to tie the score. Geiger fouled Yoder, who missed and Stichter missed a field goal. Kidder rebounded but Kent Stichter stole the ball and Long put Wawasee ahead 18-16. Lantz tied the socre but Stichter gave the lead back to Wawasee. Long rebounded and Auer made a basket. Yoder scored for the

A basket by Long put Wawasee ahead. Kidder missed and Long rebounded and hit another basket. Troyer hit a long shot just as the buzzer sounded and halftime score was 30-29, Wawasee. Fairfield got the third quarter tip but missed and Kent Stichter scored the first points of the second half. Lantz scored to put the Falcons down by only one. Wawasee missed and Kauffman put Fairfield ahead. Auer missed, Stichter fouled and then Geiger fouled. Kauffman hit both free throws. Troup made a long shot to make the score 35-34. Kauffman scored for the Falcons and they lead by 3. Long scored to put Wawasee within one. Geiger rebounded, Troup was fouled, hit both free throws and Wawasee again lead. Miller hit for Fairfield and Geiger for Wawawee. Kidder was fouled by Geiger, his field goal counted and he hit two free throws. Long scored and the Warriors were down by only one again. Kauffman hit two free throws when he was fouled by Troup. Long put Wawasee within one, stole the ball and passed to Troup who put Wawasee in the lead. A charging foul gave the Warriors back the ball and Troup put up another good shot. At the end of the third quarter Wawaseee lead 48-45. After three jumps, Fairfield came out with the fourth quarter tip and Kauffman scored. Paulus was fouled by Troyer and hit both shots. Erb hit his first basket for Fairfield and they lead 49-48. Troup missed and Miller scored for the Falcons. Long’s shot was in and out and Kauffman scored. Kent Stichter fouled under the basket making five fouls for him and Yoder hit two free throws. Fairfield lead 55-48. Troup missed but Geiger rebounded and scored. Miller scored for Fairfield, making the score 57-50. Geiger hit a long shot and Miller scored. Geiger was fouled by Kauffman and hit both foul shots.

Koble stole the ball and scored for Wawasee. Brian Geiger then fouled out of the game and Kauffman hit two free throws. Kauffman fouled and Koble hit two foul shots. Miller was fouled and hit one shot, Yoder was fouled and hit one, Miller rebounded and scored. Fairfield lead 65-58. Troup scored for Wawasee and they were down by five with 1:21 left in the game. The ball was knocked away and Long made a basket for the Warriors. Long then stole the ball, made another basket and Wawasee trailed by only one with 54 seconds left. Wawasee pressed but Fairfield passed time off the clock, until with eight seconds left Long fouled Miller, who missed, a foul was called on Koble with 5 seconds left and Miller hit one free throw. Wawasee trailed by two. They couldn’t get a shot off in the last four seconds and Fairfield won 66-64. The Mishawaka game previously scheduled for Friday has been re-scheduled for February 10, due to Mishawaka's involvement in the state football finals. Little People win LWBA tournament

Winners have been named in the Lakeland Women’s Bowling Association tournament held at the Wawasee Bowl November 11. 15 and 16. The team scratch event was won by the Little People Shoppe with 2,413. Members of the team are Charmaine Egolf, Connie Solina, Nancy Shields, Sherry Keim and Nancy Anderson. State Bank of Syracuse won the team handicap with 2,686. Team members are Jan Hays. Evie Kirkdorfer, Joan Stoelting, Luch Johnson and Sandy Flanagan. Winning the doubles were Sharon Gilbert and Connie Smith*

JV team falls

At Wawasee on Tuesday Fairfield pulled ahead early and the Warriors couldn’t come back. A traveling call and fouls against Wawasee gave Fairfield a lead early in the game. Smith lead the scoring for Wawasee in the first quarter and Kirkdorffer was the Falcon’s leading hitter. The first quarter score was 11-8 with Fairfield leading. In the second quarter Spunar scored four for Wawasee, Roberts scored two, Pena scored two, Thorn scored two and Hare scored one. Workamn and Kistler rebounded well for Wawasee. Fox, Stump, Kirkdorffer and Smoker scored for the Falcons. Halftime score was 25-19 in Fairfield’s favor. Spunar scored four and Kistler scored two for Wawasee. Thwaits scored two for Fairfield and Wawasee was within two, but the Falcons made four quick points and the socre was 31-25. GAME RESCHEDULED Due to Mishawaka's involvement in the recent football playoffs the WawaseeMishawaka basketball game scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21, has been postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10, 19X1, with the JV game beginning at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity game slated for X p.m. The game will be held at Mishawaka.

JV stopped in close contest By SHARON STUCKMAN The Wawasee JV game at Carroll was a close one. It gave fans a look at some upcoming Warriors. Kevin Smith and Jeff Thom lead the Wawasee scoring and David Workman was strong on rebounds in the first half. At halftime the Chargers lead 26-17 and Warriors trailec'at the end of the third quarter by a score of 3823. With 41 seconds left in the game Wawasee pulled within two, a score of 42-40, on rebounds by Dave Roberts and Rick Pena and excellent shooting by Smith, Spunar and Kistler. Carroll pulled out ahead in the last few seconds on shots by Huneck and Bauserman and the Chargers won 45-40. The young Warriors showed a lot of determination in the comeback and we can look forward to some exciting junior varsity games this season. All events winners were Linda Jones, handicap, 1,742; and Kathryn Knisley, scratch, 1,595. Highest game rolled in the tournament was a 258 by Susan Corn. She will receive a century award patch for bowling 100 pins over her average. Paula Bright rolled games of 167,204 and 232 to finish with a 603 series, the highest of the tournament.

Warrior wrestlers first match at home Thursday The Wawasee wrestling team will begin the season at Home Thursday at 7 p.m. when they face Plymouth. Coach Welborn feels that this is going to be a good season for the team. Returning lettermen for the Warriors are Gary Gerencser, Oscar Hernandez. Kevin Walker. John Stuckman, Jim Salzar and Joel Bales. Manyyoung men have moved up this year and some promising freshmen are on the scene. The wrestlers will face Warsaw there next Tuesday in their second match and this is an important match for the team. Freshmen start season with win By SHARON STUCKMAN The first basketball contest of the season brought the Columbia City Eagles to Wawasee, where two fine freshman teams put Wawasee on top. Leading scoring in the first half for the “B” team were Kim Zurcher and Steve White. Weisser, Doll and Coffing were leading rebounders. At halftime Wawasee lead 30-13. In the third quarter Zurcher, Doll, Atwood and Auer each scored a field goal and White and Vitaniemi each hit one free throw. White, Coffing and Vitaniemi lead/fh rebounds. Third quarter score was 40-25. The Eagles got a chance for a three point play early in the final quarter. The basket counted but the free throw attempt failed. Wawasee missed the next shot and Columbia City brought their score to 29. Doll then hit a shot under the basket and two plays later Vitaniemi hit two foul shots to raise the score. Rhodes, Zurcher and White each scored field goals in the fourth quarter and Wawasee won 50-39. The “A” team game started out an even contest but Wawasee pulled ahead and kept the lead. Hensen, Weisser, Kyle Swartz and Hecke led the Warrior scoring in the first quarter to put Wawasee ahead 12-7. Hecke, Hensen and Ken Swartz were the scorers for the Warriors in the second quarter with Hecke, Schmall and Weisser leading on rebounds. The halftime score was Wawasee 22-Columbia City 14. Neither team scored for almost two minutes of the third quarter. The Eagles finally broke the ice with a basket to bring them within 6 and they got the ball when a jump ball was called. But the Warriors stole the ball and shot for two. Both teams lost the ball out of bounds and Hensen stole the ball and made a shot. The Warriors scored 10 and led at the end of the third quarter 32-18. Kyle Swartz and Hecke each scored four in the fourth quarter. Hensen, Weisser and Evans each had two and Wawasee won 46-20. There have been some changes in the freshman schedule. The next frehsman game is Monday, Nov. 24, against Manchester at home. An updated schedule will be published here next week.

Warriors defeat Bellmont

Wawasee High School defeated Bellmont in a swim meet at WHS on Monday, Nov. 17. The ending score was WHS 91, Bellmont 80. In the 200-yard medley, first place winners were Tim Crum, Kent Butcher, Mark Crum and Marshall Boyer. The third place winners were Bill Dixon, Ken Horning, Dan Enright and Brian Hibschman.

second. The 500-yard freestyle winners were Andy Wysong, first; Tony Boyer, second. Tim Crum placed third in the 100 backstroke. In the 100 breaststroke competition. Kent Butcher placed second; Marshall Byer placed third. In the 400 freestyle relay, Troy Webb placed second, with Tony Boyer, Andy Wysong and Ken Horning.
