Warriors lose opener at Carroll Saturday

By SHARON STUCKMAN Wawasee gave the Chargers a good battle Saturday night and up until the last minute it appeared they might pull it out but they didn’t come out with the victory. Carroll controlled the opening tip but their first shot failed and Brian Geiger pulled out the rebound. Tom Troup made the first basket of the evening for Wawasee. Carroll traveled giving Wawasee back the ball and Kent Stichter made a long shot to give the Warriors four Gumbert put the Chargers on the board. Geiger missed his next shot but it was tipped in by Stichter. John Locke stole the ball for Wawasee and made another Warrior basket. Barry Dice’s basket raised Carroll’s score to four. Jeff Long saved a loose ball and raised Wawasee’s score to 10. The Warriors again got the ball when the Chargers traveled and Troup made the score 12-4. Scott Clark then added to the Charger score and after recovering a loose ball, Dice added another basket. Long passed off to Kent Stichter who made the basket. Carroll got their own rebound Clark scored. Long missed his next basket but Kent Stichter rebounded and '' made the basket. Carroll made a basket and the Warriors quick pass to Troup under the basket added to their score. Attempting to rebound, Long fouled Clark, who’s foul shots both failed and Kirk Stichter rebounded for Wawasee. Jay Auer’s shot missed but Troup tied up the ball. However, the Chargers controlled the tip. Gumbert made the « last basket of the quarter making the score 18-14. Todd Davis tipped the ball to Paulus and the Warriors started the second quarter with a score by Auer. Paulus rebounded and . Kirk Stichter was fouled but the Warriors were not in the bonus. The Chargers stole the ball and Merryman was fouled by Koble and his free throw was good. Wawasee lost the ball out of bounds and Carroll came within two on a score by Pelkington. Troup missed his next shot, he was fouled but missed the free throws. Geiger tied up the ball on the rebound but lost on the jump and Carroll had the ball. Schmitz tied the ballgame with five minutes left in the half. Geiger’s next shot missed and a basket by Dice put the Chargers ahead for the first time in the game. Long missed his next basket but rebounded on a missed Charger basket. Both Locke and Geiger missed, Carroll had the ball, Kent Stichter fouled and Merryman made a long shot to put Carroll in the lead by four. Carroll stole the ball and Dice made another basket. Troup made the second Warrior basket of the quarter. Carroll lost The ball on a travel but got it back when the Warriors passed out of bounds. Clark missed the field goal but was fouled by Stichter and made one point. Wawasee lost the ball but Geiger got the rebound, then missed his next shot. Carroll then lost the ball out of bounds and

Geiger was fouled in the act of shooting. The basket counted and his free throw was good making the score 27-25. Carroll gained another basket on a tip in but Kent Stichter made a long shot just as the half ended 29-27. Game Tied Carroll got the third quarter tip and first basket but Auer added to the Warrior score. Troup forced a jump but Carroll controlled. Clark missed and Kent Stichter rebounded. Troup tied the game. Geiger came up with the ball and Long put Wawasee back in the lead, he was fouled and the free throw was also good. Gumbert lost the ball for the Chargers and Auer made another basket. Kent Stichter stole the ball but Troup missed. Long came out with another rebound but threw the ball away on the in bounds play. Gumbert then made a basket and was fouled by Geiger. His shot was good making the score 36-34. Troup's next shot missed and Gumbert tied the score. Long missed his next shot and Dice put Carroll back in the lead. Geiger tied the score with a long shot but Clark put Carroll back on top 40-38. Auer tied the score and after an offensive foul the Warriors had the ball again. Geiger got off a shot and he was fouled but missed the free throw. Merryman was fouled but missed and Geiger came out with the rebound, was fouled and made one of two. making the score 4340. Schmitz’s basket brought the Chargers within one but Geiger hit another one to put the Warriors back ahead by three. Merryman’s long shot put Carroll within one and Auer’s next shot missed. Troup fouled on the next play and Carroll had the ball. Davis fouled Clark, attempting to save the ball and Clark put the Chargers ahead when he hit both his foul shots. Koble traveled and Carroll lost the ball out of bounds just as the third quarter ended with the score Carroll 46, Wawasee 45. The Chargers controlled the tip but Schmitz missed his shot and Clark fouled Todd Davis on the rebound. Davis tied the game. On the net plav Kirk Stichter fouled Gumbert who put the Chargers in the lead by two. Kirk Stichter missed the next shot and Merryman gave Carroll the four point lead. Stichter’s next basket was good but Schmitz’s shot also scored. Wawasee traveled and Merryman’s long shot added to the Charger lead. Long missed the next but Stichter was fouled and converted both free throws. Auer fouled Gumbert, who missed but a battle for the rebound forced a jump and Carroll got the tip. Long stole the ball and passed to Troup who made a long shot to bring Wawasee back within two and a chance to tie the game when Merryman was called for charging. Geiger, however, missed and Gumbert was fouled and both free throws were good to put the Chargers ahead by four. Troup had a three-point play and put the Warriors down by only one. A shot by'Clark gave Carroll back a good lead and a basket by

Geiger didn’t count, as he traveled on the play. Carroll then traveled but a shot by Auer failed and Carroll lead 58-55 and had the ball. Wawasee stole the ball but missed and turned the ball over with 2:17 left in the game. Dice’s next shot was good and Kent Stichter hit making the score 60-57 with 1: 39 left. Long was fouled on the next rebound and he hit one of the two and Wawasee was back within two. Scott Clark, open under the basket hit for two and Wawasee turned the ball over on a traveling call. Auer fouled Gumbert but he missed. The last field goal of the game was made by Scott Clark for Carroll and Merryman shot for the last two points on a foul and Carroll won 67-59.

Bowl-A-Thon to raise money for world's hungry

The Lakeland Division of Christian Rural Overseas Program will sponsor a Bowl-A-Thon to raise funds for the world’s hungry Saturday, Nov 22, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Wawasee Bowl in Syracuse. The bowling alley owners and employees are working in cooperation with CROP volunteers to insure the success of the Bowl-A-Thon. CROP is an educational agricultural program sponsored by the World Community of Churches and estimates oneeighth to one-fourth of the world population goes to bed hungry every night. Area men in Ohio marathon Three local men successfully participated in the first annual Columbus Bank One Marathon in Columbus, Ohio, last week end. The 26.3 mile race, which marshalled an international field, followed a scenic course through city neighborhoods and parks and along two rivers. The course started and finished in downtown Columbus, with a special concert series and other events held along the route. Tony Clouse of Syracuse completed the event, which started at 12 noon on Sunday, in 3:17:48. Jim Mills, also of Syracuse, finished in 3:24:11. Ron Baumgartner of Milford finished in 3:25:58. Hie three left Saturday morning and returned home Sunday evening. There were 2,600 runners in the race.

Chairman Dan Watson of North Webster is appealing to bowlers who will secure per pin sponsers and sponsers who will support bowlers and/or will make a contribution to the program in which 90 cents of every $1 donated reaches the destination under the direct supervision of CROP personnel. Contribution of seed grains, tools, equipment, clothing, domestic animals, well materials or “Friendship Farm" acreage (20 to 40 acres of tillable ground to be farmed by CROP neighbors on a 50-50 basis) will also be accepted. Wrestling officials meet in Milford The Northern Indiana Officials Association will hold three meetings for all Indiana High School Athletic Association wrestling officials at the Milford Junior High. The first meeting will be Monday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. The second meeting will be December 1 and December 15 has been set for the third meeting. All meetings begin at 7 p.m. Veteran officials and anyone interested in becoming a high school wrestling official should attend. Association Vice President Ken Mirer of Goshen will be in charge of the program.
