of the Brethren in the early 1970’s helping with agricultural problems. Cordes used slides to illustrate that two-thirds of the land in Bolivia is either mountainous or high plateau which is an average 12,000 feet above sea level. Most Bolivians live on the plateau on which only a few hardy crops can grow. The remainder of the land is of low elevation which is made up of swamp, forest or grassland Some of the lowland is very fertile and can be developed for profitable agricultural production, according to Cordes. Cacao, from which cocaine is produced, is a money crop for this region, but it needs to be controlled. The guest speaker pointed out the plateau region faces poverty and has a high rate of illiteracy. Children in this region are undernourished and many die at an early age. Christian World Service, supported by 30 Protestant and Orthodox denominations in the United States, is working through CROP to help poverty-stricken areas with agricultural

technology, food production, better seeding methods and road building. A Bowl-A-Thon has been scheduled for Saturday afternoon, Nov. 29, at Wawasee Bowl in Syracuse to help raise funds in Kosciusko County for the CROP project. Interested persons may participate as bowlers, sponsors or both and may contact Lakeland Kiwanian Dan Watson for further information. Cordes was introduced as the guest speaker at the Lakeland Kiwanis Club by Larry Haney of Milford, Kosciusko County CROP chairman.
