10 YEARS AGO. NOV. 11,1970 Byron Connolly, president of the Syracuse town board, is congratulating Robert Seward, owner of the new Rustic Manor Apartments, now open at the corner of Brooklyn and Oak streets in Syracuse. The first of two units is now open, the unit houses four one-bedroom apartments, manufactured by Heartland Homes Corp., Bremen. A second four-unit will be available soon. 20 YEARS AGO. NOV. 8. 1960 Edwin A. Kleinknight, former owner of the S & M Sales, Inc., is now associated with the Jones Insurance Agency in Syracuse Kleipknight, who with his wife, has been a resident of this community for the past 23 years coming from Angola. Association, it is an annual project and this year for the first time included the kindergarten classes. Women of the Women’s Society of Christian Service have been engaged for the past several months preparing for their holiday bazaar, to be held Thursday from 2 till 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. Twenty members of the Syracuse Past Matrons Club met at the home of Mrs. E. O. Dunn for a Thanksgiving dinner Tuesday night. Turkey was prepared by the committee and the rest of the dinner was potluck. Newest addition to the staff of the Syracuse-WawAsee Journal is James F. Osborne. Duties of the newest member will include calling regularly^on all Journal advertisers. 30 YEARS AGO. NOV. 10. 1950 Republicans in Kosciusko county, and in Indiana and the nation as a whole won a
resounding victory Tuesday in the general elections. Altho the telephone strike is now in progress, Floyd L. Shelton district manager of the United Telephone Co., Inc. states that the local company is accepting calls to all points and attempting to complete them. He also states that none of their own employees are involved in the strike. Starting at 5 p.m. sharp in the Grace Lutheran Church here, a very delicious supper will be served on Wednesday, Nov. 15. On the menu will be scalloped chicken, vegetables, salads, relishes, rolls, jelly, pie and coffee. The price will be what you think it is worth. The Hex Rural home economics club observed "family night” at the Hex Grange hall, Monday evening. A pot-luck supper was served to twenty members and their families and seven visitors. The Russell Smood family, of Wawaka, presented a musical program for the evening s entertainment. 50 YEARS AGO, NOV. 13. 1930 That a dollar spent in Syracuse today, Thursday, Nov. 13, 1930 will buy more than a dollar spent Nov. 13 last year, is shown in the statments issued by businessmen of Syracuse. Only postmaster Sargent speaks of prices being as high this year as last. He says it still costs 2 cents to buy two cent stamp. Tying North Webster 10-10 at the half, and again at the end of the third quarter, Syracuse’s first
team lost to North Webster in the last few moments of the game, by three points. The final score was 23-20. The John Meek house was slightly damaged by fire last Thursday afternoon. It is rented by Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin, Mr. Laughlin being an employee of the B. and O. Railroad. Breeding of bugs on Lake Wawasee is to begin soon, according to today’s announcement, but these bugs aren’t the kind humans hide away from, behind a protection of screens. These are fish fodder. This enlarging of the fish hatchery at Papakeechie to include the breeding of bugs is just one minor part of the work under way there at present. Trash and grass fire Sandra Smith, Syracuse, reported a trash and grass fire across from Baker’s Market, on SR 13, November 13. Someone was burning trash and the flames got into the marsh grass and dead limbs. The Syracuse Fire Department extinguished the fire and returned to the station. False alarm at Lilly's An automatic alarm malfunction took the Syracuse Fire Department to the Eli Lilly Estate east house on Warner Road on November 13. The department checked the house and found no fire.

Area women in accidents
Two women from Milford and Syracuse were involved in accidents on Friday, Nov. 7, in Goshen. A car driven by Nellie M. Honeycutt, 33, r 1 Milford, was struck by an auto operated by Arnold C. Roth, 48. Goshen The accident occurred at 3:54 p.m. on Goshen’s Main Street. Roth was attempting a left turn when his car collided with the oncoming Honeycutt car. Neither driver was injured. Total damages were set at $3,600. Two cars hit deer Bernice Metzger, 33. r 1 Leesburg, complained of knee pain following a car-deer crash on November 8. She was a passenger in an auto driven by Norman E. Metzger. 38, r 1 Leesburg. A deer was killed when it jumped in front of the Metzger car on SR 15. two and one-half mi les north of Leesburg Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the 1979 vehicle. Another deer was killed November 7 when it was struck by a car driven by Arlus J. Schaefer, 27. r 2 North Webster The mishap occurred on CR 700E, two miles southwest of North Webster. Second Accident In another accident at 6:33 p.m., Elizabeth A. Runge, 19. r 2 Syracuse, slid into the back of a truck operated by Keith Miller. 16. Goshen. The mishap occurred at West Pike St.. Goshen. Both drivers had braked for a car ahead which hit a curb. The pavement was wet and slippery. Damages were set at S4OO.
