Charles Baldwins to be missionaries in West Africa

ByKIMHIEBER Chuck and Debby Baldwin will soon become missionaries. Not too long ago they were accepted by the United World Mission and appointed to service in Mali, West Africa. Chuck Baldwin is a native of Syracuse and Debby is from Fort Waype. Both are 26 years old and met while volunteering as camp counselors near Roanoke, Va. “We’re going because it was a call of the Lord. If we would have had a choice, we would have preferred Canada or Alaska,” Chuck explains eagerly. “Through our prayers we realize where we are needed. Now, we’re happy about going there.” The couple is planning on departing from Syracuse in December to begin four years in the. mission field. Although the exact departure date depends on thefinances. In order to go, they must raise $21,000 per year in pledges from individuals and churches. The couple must also find $12,000 for the outgoing expenses to pay for the trip, language classes and shipping of supplies. “So far we’ve raised 65 per cent of our monthly commitment," explains Debby. “We’ve also got about one third of the $12,000 that we need. " United World Missions was not the only mission they contacted about serving They were in touch with five different mission groups. All of the others were eventually eliminated through responses and contacts. Some <■ had no openings, others did not offer what the couple wanted. Switzerland They do not immediately depart from the United States to Africa, however. To begin their mission they are first sent to Switzerland for eight to nine months of basic training. Once they arrive, they will study the Mali spoken language of Minnick. They will also learn Bambara, the language they will teach in. French is the national language of the country, although only the educated people speak it. The Baldwins have foreign language background in Spanish, but no other languages. They will arrive in Mali sometime late next summer. There are eight families that will be located with them in four stations. In their station, there will be one other coppie and two nurses. “We take training from missionaries in the field. They have to train us six months before leaving,” tells Debby.

In Africa, Mali is the second poorest country. Their foods are “hand-to-mouth” growing peanuts as their main crop. They also eat “milt” or rice. The are also Muslim influenced with 99.5 per cent participating in the Muslim faith. “Chuck’s coming from Africa, where he spent the first seven years of his life in Nigeria, will help. They have no electricity in our village of Kenieba. There are 4,000 people ia the village and it’s a large village in comparison to others. They even have kerosene refrigerators and freezers,” grinned Debby. “I’ve never lived without electricity. We’re told that there will be two 55 gallon barrels of water pumped each morning in to the tank, so we will have running water. The home, left by missionaries, is cement block.” The hottest two months in Mali are April and May where temperatures reach 130 degrees. However, there is no humidity. The coolest months are November and December with temperatures in the 65 to 70 degree range. “The average temperature is about 105 degrees Rains break the hot spells. We will have 12 hour days. They have a threehour break each day from 12 to 3 p.m. that is comparable to a siesta because of the heat," tells Chuck. Before leaving for Switzerland, the couple must pack their belongings in crates and ship them to Africa with a four-year supply of food. It’s cheaper by boat, but it takes three to six months to get the crates in Africa after shipping. Brethren and obtained his private pilot’s license while attending McPherson College. He later continued his flight and airplane mechanics training while pastoring with his wife in Alabama and Kansas churches. Debby completed general mission work and has her basic emergency medical technicians’s training. She will also be using her secretarial and homemaker skills. ** Chuck’s job will include a great amount of flying. About 65 per cent of his flying time will be for medical evacuations, with additional flying with supplies, pastors and bringing the weekly mail. “We’re excited about going. We can contact folks now about what we will be doing if they are interested. We would be happy to share our program of slides with an explanation to any questions,” . announced Debby. Following four years in Mali, the couple will spend one year’s furlow. They will have the option to return to Africa for another term if desired. For Debby, becoming a missionary is a new experiecne. I’ve learned a great deal from Chuck's parents, since they were missionaries. They have shared a lot of wonderful things.” The Baldwins will not return to the United States at any time during their four year mission unless it is for a death in the familv.

Speaking words of wisdom

By G. EDWARD GEANS Minister “It takes people like you to make people like me.” The Bible puts the same thought in another way. “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). Together, these proverbial statements teach us that our company often shapes our character. So maybe it is time we take a close look at those who are close to us. If you are miserable, and want to feed your self-pity, you will unconsciously seek out those kinds of people who will only add pity upon pity. One proverb says it this way, “Misery loves company.” If, on the other hand, you want to rise above a fallen morale, then you will seek out those who are living successful lives. “Birds of a feather flock

together.” Those who are failing at life tend to gravitate to each other as do those who are succeeding at life. It is an undeniable cycle. A negative person seeks the company of other negative people, who, in turn, only contribute to negative thinking. Take a close look at your closest company. What you are, in terms of your outlook on life and your behavior, might simply be a reflection of who they are. The Bible adds this thought, “Bad company corrupts good morals" (ICor. 15: 33). If you are miserable, chances are your friends helped make you that way. If your morals are low, perhaps it is due, in part, to close associates and friends who have low morals. One of the places to start is by changing your company. Please allow me to give a personal reference. I would like to put in a plug for the best company I know. It is the kind of company where positive thinking and right living are second nature. I am talking about the company of God, His Word, His people and His Spirit. Do you want to raise your standard of living, in every sense of the word? Then I invite you to join me in the presence of royal company, Jesus Christ. (Gal. 3:27). Community services at North Webster Many communities are offering special church services in celebration of Thanksgiving on November 27. In the North Webster area, one community service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. in the North Webster United Methodist Church. Leading the service will be Rev. Ray Taylor of Morris Chapel. The service is sponsored by the United Methodist Church. Church of God, Church of the Brethren and Morris Chapel, all of North Webster.
