FOOTBALL * * * * By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON. D. C. - Detroit and Buffalo are the biggest surprises in the National Football League this year, with San Diego and Philadelphia solid performers also. But it's yet early to predict the outcome of traces with any degree of certainty. One of the major 1980 stories would be Detroit’s surge to the top-if it continues. One new All-American back (Sirtis of Oklahoma) plus some other improvements has made the Lions respectable. Competing teams also point to rhe Lions' weak schedule, which will help--as it helped Tampa a year ago. This central division race should be interesting, if Tampa and Chicago get into it. The big question at Tampa, as always, is Doug Williams, the quarterback. Ricky Bell has also accomplished little as a runner. Coach John McKay and sportscasters generally continue to say how great Williams is, and will be, and they should know. They excuse mental lapses by saying this is only Williams’ third year. But critics note

mented about Delta in saying “I like to play any football team who is the state power, there’s no joy in playing a losing team. I plan on beating Delta and playing other schools like Delta. I don’t want to play single ‘‘A’’ teams.” He further commented about the Northern Lakes Conference, saying “this conference we’re in is the strongest conference in the state.” Dickerson introduced Richard Welborn, freshman coach and his assistant, Rudy Cesco. Welborn commended his freshman team members in their attendance, togetherness and 'team unity. He also gave them several challenges: try and participate in

That’s hotly denied in turn and branded a racial defense. The answer should become clear in 1980 or by 1981--and everyone hopes for Williams the best. He doesn't lack confidence.

FROM THE MAIL BAG When 1 was a kid I was fascinated by lyitt| quietly on a bank and observing the habits of fish. Maybe that’s why today 1 have an 18,000 gallon fish bowl right in my office. In it are many species of fish but I’m especially interested in the big, ol’ bass in there. Take one we nicknamed Leroy Brown. I put him in the aquarium after I caught him and he weighed about a pound. Now he’s over five and he’s boss of about a ten-foot radius at one end of the tank. When we put a new bass into the tank the colder water makes it sluggish and it is unoriented, so it tries to hide. OT Leroy eases up to

10 returning gymnists

ByDEBFOX The Warrior girls’ gymnastic team has a new gymnastics coach, Kim Conrad, who spent last season as an assistant coach under Marcia Carpenter. Mrs. Conrad stated she is looking forward to an exciting season with 10 returning gymnasts this year. Those returning girls include Heather Beer, a senior and Jill Haab, a junior. Beer and Haab are the only two girls returning who have lettered in this sport. Beer is an all around gymnast (floor, vault, bars and beam) and Haab participates in beam, floor and vault. Other returning girls, who have not lettered, are Kim Spitler, sophomore, floor exercises in the

fFfl Youth w Center Events

By JILL STANLEY The Lakeland Youth Center will present awards to all spice sale winners on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. Each child having a LYC jacket and or a cash prize coming should attend the program. The Lakeland Youth Center staff hopes that all family and friends of each child will attend and enjoy the evening. The program will be short because it’s during a school night, but the LYC is proud and wants to honor them. The youth center’s winter brochure should be distributed to elementary school students by the end of the week. Additional copies will also be available in numerous town stores. The fall season activities and programs have grown. More people than ever before joined the exercise class. The judo class has more than doubled and the students are asking for more and longer classes. The gymnastic classes also expanded with students learning more skills. The new football skills contest and awards program was successful and rewarding.

the newcomer, nudges him a few times, and stays with him until he becomes normal again. And when we’re testing lures, Leroy never goes for one. Why I’ve even seen him bump away another bass which began chasing a lure. The only time Leroy will take a lure is when he’s guarding his nest. Even then, he doesn’t strike the lure but just takes it in his big jaws and carries it off to drop it. If all bass were as smart as Leroy, 1 might not be in business. But, bass are a whole lot like humans, we have our smart ones and some not so smart, And I’m sure the less smart bass we can catch taste just as good as the smarter ones we probably never will catch.

In a few weeks the drama class will present a Christmas play to the elementary students. The Lakeland Youth Center board members and staff are pleased with the program expansion. Warriors to have running game this year

By DEB FOX “Realistically I want to double last year’s record and show a steady improvement, which I felt we did in all but one or two games last year.” This is one of the goals Wawasee varsity basketball coach Mike Jones has set for his Warrior Team. In addition to this goal he added the players are wiser, t more experienced and doing 'things better than all last year but, “We’ll miss Bart Bowser.” As compared to last year, the

as the team has in the past. Something new this year is the increased difficulties in the intermediate routine. Mrs. Conrad stated that during the summer months the United States Gymnastics Federation decided to increase the difficulties of the skill level for competition due to the increasing popularity of the sport. However, the beginning compulsary routines will not be changed and the optional team is highly competitive each year. Assisting Mrs. Conrad will be Carolyn Baker who has coached the Milford Junior High gymnastics team for the past number of years. Mrs. Conrad stated she has not felt any pressure on her trying to follow in the footsteps of Mrs. Carpenter. “Having worked with Marcia helped me see what was involved in the job. She’s an excellent person to work with.” Mrs. Conrad is an elementary school teacher at Syracuse Elementary and is also a state gymnastics judge. In 1978-79 she was head gymnastics coach at ’West Noble High School. Manager for the gymnastics team will be Ellen Meek.

By DEB FOX The goal of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on the national, state and local level is “To present the athletes and coaches and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. ’ ’ Wawasee has a group of Christian athletes who are affiliated with the national fellowship. This group was started 11 years ago when Wawasee High School was formed. Current sponsors of the group are Ted Mahnensmith and Gary Baker. Prior to Mahnensmith and Baker, sponsors were Vern Zurcher and Donn Kesler.

positive group, very coachable and a fine group. I enjoy them and if I had any changes to make, I wish they were taller,” This season there were 26-27 boys trying out for the team and Jones expected more from the football team than he received. Out of the ones he expetted from the football team, threeto four of them are out because ofinjuries, in all, he only received four football hlayers. He alsb stated there are fewer juniors oit for the team because, “normallythey’re the ones you have to cut.”He also added that many juniors have the decision to make about whether they want to play or not. Competition Conference teams are expected to be tough again this year according to Jones, “I’ve found most schools up here have a program where they don't have down years, they always* have something coming up and that’s what I’m trying to do.” “We play a pretty tough schedule and we had bad news about playing Mishawaka in February, which will hurt us.” Jones elaborated by saying, Wawasee is normally the Mishawaka Cavemen’s first game of the season, giving Wawasee the edge and an extra plus for the Warriors might have been the first game with a new coach. With Wawasee playing the Cavemen later on in the season, Jones feels they may lose some of that edge. The Warriors will be trying a running game if they can get the ball and maintain control of it, Jones remarked that last year the Warriors were outrebounded seven times a game and averaged getting beat by three points per game. “If we can’t beat them dowi the court, we’ll beat them otherways.” Wawasee opers its season with an away game against Carroll on November 15. The first home game is Tuesday evening, Nov. 18, against Fairfidd.

Currently there ate between 4050 WHS students vho are connected with the orgaiization. The students meet once i month and they try to meet one lime a month in an evening meeting. Mahnensmith comnented it’s harder to meet at nijht with all other other activities occurring. Fellowship of Christian Athletes is not onk for the athletes but for those who are interested in athletics and anybody who shares ai interest in Christ. The club is opened to both boys and girls. The club operates from dues and at one time they operated the concession stand during the holiday tourney. Officers for the group are Brian Roberts and Brenda Hurter, cocaptains; and Stacy Wall, secretary-treasurer.
