It happened ... in Syracuse

10 YEARS AGO. NOV. 4,1970 Dr. Robert Craig won reelection and John Kroh gained the seat vacated by his father when voters went to the polls Tuesday to elect Lakeland school board members. Both are residents of Syracuse and will represent district two, Turkey Creek township. Wawasee high school basketball season tickets will go on sale Monday, Nov. 9, according to an announcement made by athletic director Eldon Ummel. Lakeland parents and students got some chilling facts about the growing drug problem in the nation’s schools at the open house at Wawasee high school last Thursday evening. The P.T.O. room membership prizes were awarded to each elementary and junior high classroom on Monday in which 50 percent or over of the parents had joined the Parent-Teacher organization at Syracuse during the October membership drive. With her brother officiating, Miss Cynthia Ann Best became the bride of Roger L. Heckaman on Saturday, Oct. 24, in the First Brethren church in Nappanee. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Best, 952 E. Market St., in Nappanee. The bridegroom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Claude Heckaman of Kale Island, Lake Wawasee. 20 YEARS AGO. NOV. 1-3, 1960 Mr. and Mrs. Roger McClintic left Thursday for Green Bay, Wise., to visit a nephew of Mrs.

McClintic. On their return they spent several days in Chicago. Judy Ridings, fifth grade pupil, won first prize for grade one to six in the poster contest featuring Halloween scenes which are on display at ’Diornburg’s this week. Alan Mey, 4th grade, was judged in second place and Barbara Fisher, sixth grade, third place. Blood donors are needed for the bloodmobile visit in Syracuse on Nov. 16. The program will be conducted on the old gym of the Syracuse high school from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Mrs. E. L. Fosbrink and daughter, Sally, were in Dubuque, lowa during the week end visiting with Mrs. Fosbrink's parents. Eleven members of the Bluebird Camp Fire Girls group met at the Scout Cabin Monday after school. The girls designed and decorated paper sacks to use when they go trick or treating. Mrs. Harry Alfrey entertained Oct. 22 at a 10:30 coffee and misc. shower for the former Miss Susan Herdrich whose wedding to Gareth Meek took place Saturday. 30 YEARS AGO, NOV. 3,1950 The Syracuse Yellow-Jackets victimized Leesburg’s Blue Blazers Wedneshay night on their home floor 75-41. The Jackets, getting off to a rather slow start, were closely trailed by the Blazers during the first quarter, but Syracuse showed power in three periods of the game. Editor Cox left Sunday afternoon for an extended deer

hunting trip in Canada. The Parent-Teacher Association held their community Hallowe’en Party, Monday night. It really was a community affair, many workers brought it to the point where it was ready to function . . . many business people donated items and service . . . the parade was the largest ever held, as yet . . . and many townspeople attended the festivities. Hilary Backman was in charge of the whole affair. Everett Mine Scout master, Syracuse Lake, attended the Boy Scout Round table and leaders training course at Goshen last week. Miss Mayne Steeker, Oakwood Park, is back home after spending two weeks in Fort Wayne. 50 YEARS AGO. NOV. 6,1930 Daniel Klink, Democratic candidate for trustee of Turkey
