OUR PHOTO this week was brought to us by Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Gillis of out Dewart Lake way and her brother, Clifford Lingofelter of Warsaw. It was taken at the Milford School in the early 1920 s and they need help in identifying it. Clifford is the fourth boy in the back row. Can anyone name any of the other young men and tell us why there are no girls in the photo? —o— A NICE note from Dorothy Williams, former Milford teacher and “1976 Citizen of the Year,” now a resident of 1324 Greencroft Dr., Goshen, in which she describes the use of improper grammar. She writes, "It must be almost impossible to teach young people grammar these days when even the current president and members of congress use sloppy English.” She sends along this helpful article for those of us in doubt, taken from the Christian Science Monitor: “There is good news for all those concerned scholars and others who regularly deplore the
be defrosted easily depends upon the size of the microwave oven. Check to see if the bird you are planning to cook will fit into your microwave oven with some room between the walls and the turkey. Some ovens will accommodate up to 18 pounds. If you have a whole turkey, don’t remove the bird from the packaging. Place it breast side down. Defrost a whole bird on high or 100 per cent power for one minute per pound plus one minute with breast down. Then, defrost for two minutes per pound plus one minute on “roast” (450

abuse of the English language in day-to-day business and government activities and the general lack of public attention to proper grammar usage. For one thing, the Associated Press reports that the ’plain English’ movement started a decade ago to reduce legal jargonese and make regulations and business contracts easier to understand is gaining momentum. A further sign that more Americans are starting to take their language seriously is the UPI report that professors and graduate students at the Illinois State University have established a ’grammar hot line’ to answer questions that come up in daily encounters with the English language. “While insurance companies in almost three-fourths of the states have introduced plain English’ in easier-to-understand, revised and shortened insurance forms, the federal government has taken steps to simplify the language in tax forms and other regulations. At least four states now have laws requiring consumer contracts to use words with ‘common and everyday meanings.’ “But the public response to the ‘grammar hot line* may be the most encouraging indication of

Although the turkey may not be frost-free after microwave defrosting, the giblets can be removed and the bird is ready for cooking.
