Stan Her Three weeks ago in order to sell a lawnmower, I advertised in this paper’s Classified Ad section and received 43 calls in less than two days. For awhile I thought about borrowing the neighbor’s mowers to keep up with the demand. One caller asked, “What does the mower do differently from other mowers?” to which I responded, “It sings on key. Would you care to see its clippings?” It did get me to thinking, though. If I can sell 43 lawnmowers in two days when I have just one to sell, imagine what I can do with my original Yankee Stadium dirt. So I called Advertising Manager Sandi Berman and gave her the following ad: “For Sale, Yankee Stadium dirt played on by George “Babe” Ruth, Tony Lazzeri and Lou*Gehrig.” Sandi interrupted and informed me that I could save some money by eliminating “George,” which I did. Then I continued. “I am a lifelong collector of dirt who has a limited supply.” Actually, that wasn’t quite true for I was standing in dirt up to my ankles while making the call and if man truly comes from dust then I have several people under my bed, either coming or going. The next day the newspaper came out with my ad prominently "displayed under the heading “Dirt for Sale.” Within 10 minutes after 1 received the paper. the phone rang. ,It was customer Numero Unh. The call

came at an inconvenient time for I was out in my back yard filling a dozen Ziploc bags with “Yankee Stadium dirt.” For the first 10 callers I had already decided to include an original, authentic replica of the Babe’s footprint. Actually, it wasn’t a footprint but more of a spikeprint. The caller wanted to know right off the top how he could be assured that it was original, authentic Yankee Stadium dirt. He had been a life-long Yankee fan and had attended three games since he was a kid. “Well,” I explained, “on the outside of the bag there •is a statement.J authorized by the Commissioner of Baseball, Daniel Buhn, stating that anyone digging up false dirt, can be prosecuted with a S2OO fine, admittance to a Califprnia AngelChicago White Sox doubleheader. or a ticket for all the Toronto Blue Jay-Seattl.e Mariner games for two seasons.” He seemed satisfied with that and when I informed him that he, being the first caller, would also receive the Babe’s spikeprint, he was ecstatic. After that sale I was convinced that the Classified Ad section could sell anything. I wonder if the Democratic Party wouldn’t mind advertising Billy Ciuter’s services as a spear-catcher? The most difficult part of the authentic Yankee Stadium dirt was not filling all those bags. It was finding a babe in the neighborhood who happens to wear spikes so that I could make some footprint casts. I had one aem for sale but it

defied description so I didn’t quite know how to advertise it. Several years ago I gave up jogging because I disliked jumping over the bodies of deceased joggers who enjoyed the thrill of running in over 100 degree temperatures. I intensely disliked running with them and then having to drag some of them home So I decided to exercise at home. I sent away for an exercise bike and when it arrived it was all jumbled up in a box with the instructions which jead “Good luck.” Imagine me building something from scratch. I was the one in high school who began building a bench in Manual Training Arts and ended up with 2,000 toothpicks. I was the one who varnished my necktie to.the top of my desk and then had to wait for six hours without moving until the varnish dried. Thus, in keeping my streak alive, I assembled the bike without much delay but several key questions were left unanswered such as: (1.) Are the two wheels supposed to be side by side? (2.) Why did the handlebar assemblage face away from the rider? (3.) How is it possible to sit on a seat when it points directly to heaven? (4.) Is pain required? I called Sandi and after a few false starts we came up with the right ad. It must have been —I could have sold 14 of them. The ad read: “For Sale. Exercise Bicycle. Only one of its kind. Assemoled. .Finding exercising outdoors painful. Now you can suffer indoors.’’
