'The Phenomena of the Paradox'
By REV. JOHN MCFARLAND Syracuse Church Os The Brethren Paradoxes are strange phenomena that characterizes many facets of our lives. A paradox is an assertion that seems, at first glance, selfcontradictory but which, nevertheless, may be very true to fact. Daily Christian life is replete with them and just now I can think of a number of examples from everyday life. The scriptures set a paradoxical tone in Matthew 16:25, “For whosoever shall save his life shall lose it..” Consider II Corinthians 12:10. “When I am weak, then I am strong.” Again, “We climb highest when we stoop lowest.” Further, there’s Luke 14:11, “A . he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Strange aren’t they? Here’s another, equally strange yet equally true. “That wftch is hardest is easiest, and that which is easiest is hardest.” But more important than all these is one which, when considered in the light of all you have generously and graciously done through the past years (if you have been giving to the work of the local church or to the needs of those without) shines above all other things; namely, “The only things we ever keep are those we giveaway.” Let’s ponder these paradoxes just a bit. Jesus taught his

followers that discipleship equates with unselfishness of spirit and action. (Matthew 16:25) If a person lives only for self and personal gain, he may amass worldly possessions but surely lose eternal reward to say nothing of the loss of the earthly joys of the selfless spirit. Contrariwise, if a person loses himself in and for others, giving himself unqualifiedly to winning and serving others, he will gain earthly joy, inner peace and eternal reward. The Apostle Paul stated that when he was weak, then he was strong! How often you and I have found this to be true! Our immediate extremity always presents God His greatest opportunity! As Christians, we should mark well the double paradox that when we are living in entire dependence on Christ, we are strongest where we are weakest, for at our weakest point the strength of Christ has its fullest opportunity; but when we are living the self-sufficient life, we are weakest where we are strongest, for there we are most susceptible to Satan’s attack. In ourselves, we are weak even where we are strong; in Christ, we are strong even where we are weak! And had you ever thought that we climb highest when we stoop lowest? How can that be? How high floats a balloon of pride? Yet nothing is baser or more

vulnerable to the prick of a pin! Pride is the sin by which Satan fell from heaven. On the other hand, nothing stoops so low as humility, yet nothing soars so high. Our Lord Jesus “humbled Himself . . . even to the death of the Cross,” and was lifted to the very throne of God, bearing “The Name which is above every name.” But with all these intriguing thoughts on The Phenomena of the Paradox have been said, the Mie thought that I want to close with is this: Love that is hoarded molds at last, Until we know someday That the only things we ever have Are those we give away. And kindness that is never used. But hidden all along. Will slowly harden till it is As hard as any stone. It is the things we always hold That we will lose someday; The only things we ever keep Are those we give away. What a paradox! Can it be true that we only keep what we give away? Yes, it is ! And when the foregoing verses are read in the light of Matthew 6:19-21, they take on even more significance. May each of you begin to live for others and mostly for the Lord, our God. It is then, and only then, that you will have the fulness of life.

Syracuse Church built in 1887
The congregation of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren was formerly a part of the Bethany Church of the Brethren, US 6 north of Milford. The church was built in 1887 and dedicated by A. H. Puterbaugh. In April 1907 the congregation was organized and J. W. Kitson, A. L. Neff and J. C. Stour were the first ministers. John Neff was the first deacon and the Sunday school was organized with Otho Warstler as superintendent. He was chosen deacon in 1907 and in 1908 was called to the ministry. For a time the work flourished under the direction of Warstler and Williams Jones as ministers. Then conditions changed and the work declined, until but a few workers remained and there was talk of disorganization. However in 1930 the district mission board of northern Indiana took over and secured J. Edwin Jarboe to hold a revival, with good results. He continued there as pastor for seven years. Improvements were made to the church by adding a full basement, installing a balcony and class rooms. In 1947, improvements were again made by adding rooms at the back of the church for a temporary parsonage. Following Jarboe, Ralph Rarick served as pastor for two years, then Lee Cory, Russell Sherman, Virgil Mock and others supplied the pulpit. Later Charles Stouder, Noble Bowman and Otto Laursen served the church as pastors for short periods of time.

In 1948, Clayton Mock came from Wisconsin and served as pastor for three years. In 1947 Lavon Symmensma, Roy Stiffler and Ethel Denton were licensed to the ministry. Symmensma was ordained to the full ministry in March 1950 and on November 12, 1950, Clayton Mock, pastor, was ordained to the eldership Harvy Landis served as a parttime pastor until failing health set in, followed by Harlan Smith, who with his wife served as Church of the Brethren missionaries in China until forced out by the Red revolution. He served until retirement from both the Syracuse and Bethel Church of the Brethren, Milford. Ralph Wagoner began an eight year term as a full-time pastor in 1962 and during his term of service there was a marked increase in membership and attendance. The Miner home at 112 South Main Street was purchased and used as a parsonage. Plans were made for major improvements to the church building, both interior and exterior. An addition to the southwest side increased the size of the auditorium and added classrooms on the main floor as well as in the basement. Jack Farrell served as fulltime pastor from 1970-1973 and then George Phillips served the congregation on a part-time basis until 1978 when John McFarland began his term. Rev. McFarland is the current pastor of the church. During the time when the district mission board had
