Freshmen triumph over Zebras in last game of season
By SHARON STUCKMAN The Zebras were off to a good start at Rochester Thursday with their first touchdown early in the first quarter. The Zebra defense stopped the Warriops short of a first down and Rochester lead 8-0 at the end of the first quarter. Two tackles by Ray Pena and a stop by Roger Stuckman forced the Zebra punt. Hernandez returned the punt to the Zebra 34-yard line and good runs by Kevin Davies and Ron Schwartz moved the ball to the two-yard line. Schwartz was in for the touchdown and a complete pass to Tony Troup tied the score with 3:59 left in the half. Defense by Blackburn, Godfrey and Reed brought up a fourth

LISTENING TO COACH’S ADVICE — Wawasee Assistant Coach Ted Mahnensmith goes over game strategy with some Wawasee Warriors during Friday night’s game against Culver. The coach’s advice apparently paid off as Wawasee won 6-0 in overtime. (Photo by Terri Chilcote)
Warriors beat Culver Military
By SHARON STUCKMAN The last home game of the season at Wawasee was a thriller. The Zebra kick was returned by Mark DeWitt to the Wawasee 39, where he was stopped by Brad Evans. Three runs by Brian gained only two yards and Clevenger’s punt fell out of bounds at the Culver 38. Cornelius ran for two. Freeman was stopped by Godfrey and an incomplete pass to Zehner brought Cornelius out to punt. Mike Brian gained a first down at the Culver 35 and a pitch-out to Kroh moved the ball to the CMA 48. Kroh was stopped at the Culver 37 by Miller and Sutton. Two plays later Jeff Cantanese recovered a fumble at the 34-yard line. Bornman, DeWitt and Dahlstrom held on defense and Culver punted, only to recover the ball two plays later at the Wawasee 20, on a fumble. A Culver pass was knocked down by Pat Morganthaler and the first quarter ended. Cornelius was stopped -by Bales, a pass intended for Nowlin
down, but on the punt, Rochester recovered at the 42 after the ball was touched by Wawasee. Steve White stopped a Zebra drive at the Wawasee 17 with 46 seconds left in the half. On the next drive Rochester ran up the middle for 6 yards and in for the touchdown with 27 seconds left in the half. A pass into the endzone added to the Zebra score and the half ended 16-8. x Rochester received, only to be caught for two losses by Garza. A stop by Carden brought up a fourth down. The kick was high and down at the Zebra 40. First downs by Hernandez and Schwartz put the ball at the 15, but a run by Hernandez and three attempts by Schwartz were short and
was broken up by Krizman and Wawasee took over at their 25. On the third play of the drive, a pass was complete to Clark at the 50 for a first down, but Bozic and Evans defended well for Culver and Wawasee punted. Culver was unable to recover the 15 yards lost on a holding penalty and Cornelius’ punt went out of bounds at the 46. Miller and Zehner stopped the next drive and Culver took over at their 20 but was unable to score and the half ended 0-0. In the third quarter Darren Grisamer intercepted a pass at the Wawasee 47. A pass to Darr three plays later was complete, but short of the first down. Defense for both teams was tight and the possession moved from one team to the other quickly. Neither team was on the scoreboard at the end of the third quarter. Culver threatene to score midway through the fourth quarter but Rich Cusick intercepted a pass at the Wawasee 14 to give the Warriors the ball. Neither team scored and tension built when Wawasee took over at their four-yard line with
Rochester took over at their fouryard line. Rochester gained only two yards in two runs and a quick kick by the Zebras was caught by White at the Rochester 25. On the next play Schwartz ran around the end of the four-yard line. The Warriors gained their second touchdown and extra points to make the score 16-16 with 41 seconds left in the third quarter. Rochester’s next possession was short and Wawasee returned the punt to the Rochester 42. Two plays later a 41-yard run by Schwartz gave the Warriors another touchdown. The pass was incomplete for the extra two points. Chris Kox’s kick bounced to the
46 seconds left in the game. Not wanting to take chances on losing the ball, Wawasee quarterback Pena fell on the ball for three downs at the line of scrimmage and regular time ran out with both teams scoreless. Culver won the toss in the overtime and took over at the 10. On their first play they were stopped for a loss of two yards by Pat Morganthaler. Sullivan passed to Wood on the next play but he was stopped at the eightyard line by Grisamer and Godfrey and on their third attempt to score, Wood was stopped by Morganthaler. Chris Burkhart’s attempt at a 25-yard field goal failed and Wawasee took over. On the first attempt Tim Kroh was stopped at the eight by Miller. The only score of the game came on the next play when Pena passed eight yards to Lance Clark in the end zone and the game ended 6-0. Wawasee now has four wins and five losses and a chance to make a 50-50 season if they can defeat playoff-bound North Wood there Friday in the final season game.
