Charles Wagner
Nov. 2.1908 —Oct. 20. 1980 Charles A. Wagner, 71, 118 West Brooklyn, Syracuse, died October 20, at 1:36 a.m. in Goshen Hospital. He had been a patient there since Thursday, Oct. 16. He was bom in Elkhart County on November 2, 1908. to Edward and Ada (McKibbep) Wagner. He was a lifelong resident of Elkhart and Kosciusko Counties. He married Dorothy Durham, in Chicago, on Novmber 7, 1944. She survives. He was affiliated with the Syracuse Church of God and retired from Penn Controls, Goshen. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three sons, Charles Duane, Goldsboro, N.C., Mark A., Richmond and Steven K., Syracuse. Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs Eugene (Doris) Gordon, Syracuse, Mrs. “'Stanley (Marjorie) Barnhart, Goshen, Grace Wagner, at home and Mrs. Thomas (Alice) Kruger, North Webster; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Glen D. Wagner, Elkhart; and one sister, Mrs. Lulu Zentz, Nappanee. The funeral will be held at the Syracuse Church of God today (Wednesday) at 11 am. with Rev. Michael Murrell officiating. Burial will follow at the Syracuse cemetery. Memorials are requested to be made to the kidney foundation or the Syracuse Church of God. Dorothy Stiver Feb. 28,1914 —Oct. 16,1980 Mrs. Dorothy R. Stiver, 66, r 4 Syracuse, died Thursday, Oct. 16, at 2:30 p.m. in her home following an extended illness. She was born in Millersburg on February 28, 1914, to Orlo and Mary M. (Alwine) Green. She moved from Millersburg to Syracuse in 1935. She married Dee Stiver, who survives, on April 20, 1935. She was a Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church member. Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Mrs. Elten (Roberta) Powers, Syracuse; one son, Roger Stiver, Detroit, Mich.; one granddaughter; and one brother, Joseph Green, Goshen

A graveside service was held Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a m. in the Syracuse cemetery with Rev. John McFarland officiating. The family prefers memorials be given to the National Institute for Cancer Research. Carl Zehwanger Carl Zeltwanger, 83, Bremen, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and was buried on Friday, Oct. 17. Funeral services were held in the Bremen Apostolic Christian Church of which he was a member. Rev. Roy Sauder of Peoria, 111., officiated. In addition to Zeltwanger’s widow, the former Minnie Laidiz, other survivors include four sons; one daughter; four sisters; three brothers; ar, ’ a niece, Mrs. Ray (Paula) Haab, Syracuse, whose mother, Nellie Z. Simm, passed away in February. Dixie Haas April 19,1912 —Oct. 19,1980 Dixie Haas, 68, former Elkhart County clerk, died at 12:55 a m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in Elkhart Hospital, where she was admitted October 10. Mrs. Haas was in poor health for six months and resigned as clerk in February 1980. A native of Warsaw, Mrs. Haas was born on April 19, 1912 and married William F. Haas in Bristol on January 31, 1943. He died May 19,1978, in Elkhart. She was a graduate of Elkhart High School and was a congressional secretary for Robert A. Grant from 1938-1941, was secretary for former Elkhart Mayor E. L. Danielson from 19521960 and from 1960-1962 she served as Elkhart Chamber of Commerce office manager. In 1963 Mrs. Haas was elected Elkhart city clerk and re-elected to that position in 1967 and 1971. In 1974 she was elected Elkhart County clerk and was re-elected in 1978. She held that position until her retirement. A member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church, she served on the vestry from 1971-1973. Mrs. Haas was a delegate to Indiana Republican state conventions from 1962-1974 and was a member of Republican Women’s Club of Elkhart County, Altrusa Club, National Federation of Republican Women, Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, Indiana Association of Clerks and Circuit Courts and International Platform Association. She also was a member by invitation to the listing of World’s Book of “Who’s Who of Women,” “Who’s Who of American Women” and “Who’s Who in Government and Contemporary Notables.” Governor Otis R. Bowen awarded her the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1980 and she was also the recipient of the 1980 YWCA businesswoman of the year award. Mrs. Haas is survived by her son, John D., Edwardsburg, Mich.; a daughter, Sue M. Beadle, Elkhart; two grandchildren; a sister, Margaret
Harden; and a brother, Joseph D. Fields, both of Elkhart. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Hartzler-Gutermuth Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Elkhart, with Rev. John Thomas, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Saint John’s The Cross Episcopal Church cemetery, Bristol. Memorials may be made to either the Elkhart or Bristol Saint John’s Episcopal Church. Maude Hartman Feb. 2,1885 —Oct. 18,1980 Mrs. Maude Elizabeth Hartman, 95, Oswego, died of complications at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw. She had been in failing health for the last 14 years. She was bom in Oswego on February 2, 1885, to Solomon and Ella (Barber) Harter. On August 24, 1908, she married Fred Hartman. He died in May 1948. A lifelong resident of Oswego, she was a housewife and a member of the Oswego Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth, Leesburg and Jim, San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Hallie Longenecker, Oswego; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Everett, Walter and William; and one grandchild. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the McHatton-Wyman Funeral Home, Warsaw. Rev. James Reffitt and Rev. Roy Mickley officiated. Burial was in the Oswego cemetery. Mary Biehl May 10,1912 — Oct. 16,1980 Mary Holbrook Biehl, 68, 211 North Scott St., Warsaw, sister of Miss Gladys Haas, Leesburg, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8:15 p.m. in Kosicusko Community Hospital. She was born in the Pierceton area on May 10, 1912, to Charles and Cora (Long) Haas. On February 6, 1928, she married Clifford Holbrook. He died on December 28, 1943. Her marriage to Maynard Denney occurred in 1948. He preceded her in death on December 5, 1959. She married Homer Biehl on July 3, 1963. He survives. Mrs. Biehl was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. In addition to her sister and husband, other survivors include three sons, Harold HolbnJbk, Richard Holbrook and R. Fred Holbrook, all of Warsaw; two daughters, Mrs. Valis (Janice) Owens, Warsaw and Mrs. William (Shirley) Hoffman, Anaheim, Calif.; two step-sons, Robert Denney, Warsaw, and Keith Biehl, Huntington; six stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert (Christine) Schooley, Warsaw, Mrs. Durwood (Pat) Shepherd, Fort Wayne, Mrs. Dean (Betty) Cook, Oregon, Mrs. Harold
(Phyllis) Meyers, Huntington, Mrs. Ronald (Marilyn) Geyer, Huntington and Mrs. Robert (Jean Ann) Heiney, Huntington; one brother, Carl Hass, Fort Wayne; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. One daughter, one brother and one grandson preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. Rev. Jill Endicott Jan. 10,1942 —Oct. 20.1980 Kathryn Jill Endicott, 38, Dewart Lake, died Monday, Oct. 20. at 6:50 am., at Miller’s Merry Manor. She had been ill for the last several months. Miss Endicott was born in Evanston, 111., on January 10, 1942, to Jack and Jeanne (Kline) Endicott. She was a lifetime resident of Kosicusko County and a member of the Milford Christian Church. Surviors include her parents; one sister, Mrs. David (Candice) Wolkins, Winona Lake; two brothers, Jeffrey, Honeoye, N.Y. and Kim, Dewart Lake; one grandmother Mrs. George (Eva) Endicott, Richland Center, Wis. Richard Mauer of the Free Methodist Church, Winona Lake, will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Helen Allen April 10,1904 — Oct. 16,1980 Helen L. Allen, 76, Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw, died at 9:05 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16. She lived in the Leesburg area for most of her adult life. She had been a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor for the last six months. She was born on April 10, 1904, in South Whitley, to Ancil and Mabel (Stanton) Yeager. Her step-father, Homer Hawkins, was from Leesburg. On June 9, 1929, she married Herman Allen. He survives and now resides at r 6 Warsaw. Mrs. Allen was a school teacher and coached the first Leesburg Girls’ Basketball team in Leesburg. She was a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church. Survivors also include two sons, Robert, r 2 Leesburg and Richard, r 1 Leesburg; seven grandchildren; one greatgranddaughter; and two sisters, Miss Ruth Yeager, Buchanan, Mich., and Mrs. Cyril (Jane) Rathbun, r 2 Warsaw. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. in the Mishler Funeral Home, Milford. Rev. J. Ross Richey of the Leesburg United Methodist Church officiated and burial was in Oswego cemetery. William Yergler, Jr. Jan. 1,1905 —Oct. 15,1980 William Yergler, Jr., 75, Belmcnt Ave., Watseka, 111., father of Mrs. Lowell (Mary Anne) Rassi, Milford, died at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Irquois County Hospital, Watseka, 111. He was admitted earlier that morning with a heart attack. Yergler was born on January 1, 1905, in Cissna Park, 111., to William and Marie (Huffman) Yergler, Sr. His first marriage was to Esther Bauer who died in 1952. His second wife, the former Cora Feller, survives. A native of Cissna Park, Yergler was a farmer, and served on the school board for some time in the Cissna Park area. In 1954 he moved to Watseka where he became co-owner of Ace Seeds, Feed Store in Watseka. He was a member of the Christian Bible Church, Cissna Park. In addition to his wife and daughter, other survivors include three sons, Wallace, Watseka, Harry, Cissna Park, Arthur, Matteson; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry, CissnaPark; and one sister, Fannie Zimmerman, Roanoke, 111. . She was also a member of Tri Kappa, Order of the Eastern Star and the Fine Arts Club, all in North Manchester, along with being an associate of Harting Furniture. She lived in North Manchester since 1936 and had formerly resided in Wabash and Akron. Custer, who is a senior at Warsaw, underwent surgery, Monday, Oct. 20, at KCH for torn ligaments in the ankle and a broken bone, just above the ankle. He also dislocated his ankle. He ts in room 329. STABLE CONDITION Jeff Sorensen, Milford, is still in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Goshen Hospital following a motorcyle mishap last week. He welcomes cards and letters from friends. They follow: On Tuesday, Oct. 14, a 15-year-old boy was injured when he fell off his motorcycle. He was transported to the Goshen Hospital Emergency Room. Also on the 14th a Milford woman, complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath, was transported to the Goshen Hospital emergency room. An 18-year-old boy was injured in an auto accident at CRs 100E and 1300 N on Friday, Oct. 17. He was transported to the Goshen Hospital emergency room. Also on Friday a Leesburg resident was injured in an auto accident at CRs 300E and 900 N. He was transported to the Goshen Hospital emergency room. On Saturday, Oct. 18, a man injured in an auto accident on CR 900 N was transported to the Kosciusko Community Hospital emergency room. An elderly Leesburg woman became ill on Sunday and was transported to the KCH emergency room. The EMS was called to a Milford home on Sunday when a mother reported her six-month-old son’s eyes were swollen. He was not transported. Syracuse EMS Mary Wilondek, 79, r 5 box 249 Syracuse, needed an ambulance on October 20. She was suffering from heart problems and was directly admitted to Goshen Hospital.

Teghtmeyer attends seminar Kosciusko County Councilman Larry E. Teghtmeyer joined northern Indiana public officials in a one-day seminar on local government productivity on October 7 in South Bend. Sponsored by the Academy in the Public Service, the eight-hour intensive course examined costeffective methods for improving, measuring and evaluating productivity of local government. Associate director of the Center for Technology Assessment and Policy studies at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Dr. Thad Smith was the seminar instructor. “Local Government Productivity” is one of 10 APS seminars offered regionally throughout the state to local elected officials. Covering a range of topics fundamental to local government, the courses are designed to improve public administration at the city, town and county levels. Funded in part through the Lilly Endowment, Inc., the Academy is seeking an additional $250,000 this year from a mixture of private and public support. For each SI,OOO the Academy receives from sources other than Lilly, the Endowment will match with $l,lOO up to $500,000. School parking lot accident Cars operated by Martha C. Ozinga. 30, r 7 Green Acres, Warsaw and Norma J. Crafton, 40, r 5 Syracuse, collided on the Wawsee High School parkimg lot around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 15. According to county police, both drivers’ vision was blocked by trees and brush at the corner. An estimated $550 damage occured to the Ozinga auto and SBOO to the Crafton’s car. No one was injured.
