Quakers meet weekly at Quaker Haven
By DEB FOX There’s something new at Quaker Haven, Dewart Lake. For the first time in eight to nine years church services are being held at the camp year around, beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Previously church services had only been held between Memorial and Labor Day. The church camp services, which is associated with the Society of Friends, are held in the retreat center. Presently there is no minister, but when there are visiting pastors at the retreat they are asked to help out. Each Sunday families on the steering committee take the responsibility for the services, one month at a time. Jerry Dain, camp manager, stated when the church becomes financially able they will be hiring a pastor full-time. Summer services at the camp have been held since 1926, when the camp was opened. Since the year-round services were started on Labor Day, they average 30-35 people each Sunday and are growing. “We’re not interested in only reaching the Quakers in the area but the unchurched people also,” stated Mrs. Jerry (Letitia) Dain, camp manager. There is a children’s Sunday school, since there are severaj children attending and there is a concern in the group about the adults having Sunday schodl along with the service. The reason why the services were switched to all year was because the nearest Friends church is 50 miles away, in any direction you would want to go. “We seem to be in the center and no one wants to travel that far," remarked Dalton Folger, instigator in the year-around services. During the summers there is an average of 175-200 people attending the Friends church. This number includes people attending the camp and surrounding areas who have cottages at the different lakes History Os Quaker Haven A group of people, headed by Aron Napier, had a vision and concern that there should be a good place for the Christian youth to camp and spear headed Quaker Haven. Napier was a Friend’s minister in New Castle at the time. When the camp was started there were 24 acres (this has currently grown to 160 acres) on the east end of Dewart Lake. The first camp building was Beulah lodge, which had dining space, office space, girls’ sleeping quarters and maintenance shop. This was torn down in 1978 when the present building was constructed. The new lodge was

started in the winter of 1978-1979. The cabins in the camp were built in the early 19505, as well as the meeting house. The retreat center was built in 1970 and the recreational vehicle area was built in 1977 and has a complete hook up and bath house. There are nature trails in wooded areas and part of the camp is farmed. There also are a softball diamond, an all purpose field, volleyball court, archery, boating, sailing, canoing, beach area and piers for the beach with a diving platform. The majority of the kids which attend the camp are from a four state area, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan and of course there are children from the surrounding area. For the last 15-20 years the camp managers have tried to promote the camp to the area groups, such as the Kiwanis and other churches, who do use the camp for camping and church picnics. Dalton stated they try to have the camp used for Christian related ways, but it is opened up to outside groups if the time and date are open. Dalton also stated 90 per cent of the people come from the Friends church and the rest from Mennonite and Brethren. New Building Quaker Hall was built by the people at Qus ker Haven with the help of men and women of the church. They raised all (he money needed themselves with the building costing $375,000. The appraisal on the building has been set at around $1 million. Dalton added that everything in

nfortunately, it's the boy who sets fire to the school library or the young person rushed to the hospital with a drug overdose who makes the headlines; overshadowing the vast majority of our good teenagers who just study hard, help around the house, find after-school jobs, excel at sports or win scholastic honors and stay out of trouble. This has caused many parents a great deal of needless anxiety about the direction which their own children will take, for the evil temptations are indeed waiting out there. However, by providing a harmonious and positive home life with the right mixture of love, understanding and firm guidelines, reinforced by the teachings at our House of Worship, we can be assured that our fiation will be in good hands when our young generation inherits it.
