What happened at Delta? Warriors defeated by 4th ranked Eagles

By SHARON STUCKMAN It must be a little awesome to be a team of 43 facing a team of 119. The Delta Eagles had some big players and some good players, but Wawasee didn’t put it together very well Friday night. On the second play of the game, after Wawasee received, the ball was fumbled and Delta took over on the Wawasee eight-yard line. Two plays later Delta was in for their first touchdown, with only 1:37 gone in the game, and their kick was good, not getting Wawasee’s game off to a very good start against such a highly rated team. Delta is ranked fourth in the state. Both Wawasee and Delta turned the ball over twice, after only four downs each. Delta attempted a field goal, which failed and Wawasee took over on their 20-yard line. An attempted pass to Lance Clark appeared good, but the ball was dropped. A roughing the passer penalty gave Wawasee 15 yards and the first down. But the Warrior offense was unable to move forward, on plays by Dahlstrom and Kroh and a pass to Clark, which were broken up.

The first quarter ended 7-0. Dahlstrom’s punt was returned to the Wawasee 42 where Delta was brought down by Mark DeWitt. Defense forced a fourth down, where Dan Godfrey recovered a fumble at the Wawasee 39 and the Warriors took over. The Warriors held for only four downs, with Dahlstrom gaining only four yards in three plays, against the tough Eagle defense. Delta took over at the Wawasee 46, on a Dahlstrom punt and from there ran over the defense, with Brad Foster doing an outstanding job for Delta, and Cusick, Krizman and DeWitt making good efforts to stop him. Foster ran in for the second Eagle touchdown with 2:26 left in the half. The kick was good and Delta lead 14-0. Neither team added to the score before halftime. Halftime featured Delta’s homecoming festivities. Delta received at the beginning of the third quarter and turned that possession into their third touchdown. Foster was still carrying for the Eagles. Stops by Krizman, Grisamer, DeWitt and Pat Morganthaler knocking the ball out of the air, were still not

for eight straight points in the first game. Mandy Siegfried served for four straight points in the last game. Kelly and Christie Speicher led in serves and hits followed by Julie Schwartz and Kathy Weisser. The girls played a good, controlled game with a lot of hustle but it just wasn’t enough against the Falcons. Players of the week are Schwartz, for her good net play and Green, for her excellent serving and hustle. The Trojans play Syracuse at home next Monday at 3:45 p.m.

enough to stop the Eagles' third touchdown. The kick was good. Wawasee held the ball for only four downs and Dahlstrom punted. The final Eagle touchdown came with 4:02 left in the third quarter on a pitch-out play and their kick was good. In the fourth quarter the Warrior offense seemed to be getting better field position, when Mark DeWitt intercepted a pass at the Delta 30 yard line. Two Warrior passses, intended for

Lance Clark looked good, but fell incomplete and a pass to Brian Kistler also failed, to drown the last Wawasee hopes. The game ended 27-0. * Hopefully, the Warriors can gain from this loss to a fine team and put their past behind them. Coach Dickerson and the Warriors can come up with a winning season and maybe they will begin with a win against Plymouth this at homecoming.

Pike fishing boosted at Waubee Lake

State fisheries biologists reported recently that northern pike stocked in Waubee Lake have dramatically increased pike numbers in this 187 acre lake near Milford' According to a recent survey, the nufnber of young pike in Waubee Lake increased by 200 per cent following a stocking of 885 northern pike fingerlings last fall by the Department of Natural Resources. Jed Pearson, DNR spokesman, explained that stocked pike were marked before release by clipping off the right pelvic fin. Without harming the fish, “fin clipping” enables biologists to distinguish stocked pike from pike produced naturally in the Homecoming tickets on sole Friday Students may buy Wawasee High School football tickets for $1 during the pre-sale at the high school’s athletic office Friday, Oct. 3, from Ba.m. to3p.m. The tickets are for the homecoming game Friday evening against Plymouth at Wawasee The game starts at 7:30 p.m. with the gates opening at6:3op.m. Tickets will cost $2 at the gate the night of the game. lake. Pearson said that two out of every three one-year old pike collected by gill nets at Waubee Lake during the survey were marked fish. Pearson reported that growth of the stocked pike, as well as survival, has been excellent. The pike reared at the Fawn River State Fish Hatchery, measuring ‘eight inches long when stocked, averaged 18*2 inches long within one year. Some stocked pike even exceeded the minimum legal size of 20 inches. Northern pike were stocked in Waubee Lake in a cooperative effort by the Indiana Department of NaturaF“Resources and the local property owners’ association to boost pike fishing. Local fishermen reported a decline in pike harvest during the 19705. Biologists believe Waubee Lake has ample forage available to pike but lacks high quality pike spawning habitat. The introduction of pike fingerlings in Waubee Lake has overcome pike reproductive limitations. Last week, 987 additional pike fingerlings were stocked in Waubee Lake. Biologists plan to determine the contribution of these fish to the pike population and to determine harvest of stocked pike. If pike survival, growth and harvest are high, the DNR and property owners’ association hope to develop a selfsufficient pike stocking program, using adult, sexually mature pike collected at Waubee Lake to obtain eggs for a local pike hatching and rearing program.
