Warriors show promise in first game of season

By SHARON STUCKMAN Wawasee’s first football game of the season, against the Warsaw Tigers, at Wawasee Friday night cannot be accurately judged by the score. Although the Warriors lost to the Tigers 21-0, it wasn’t a discouraging game for Wawasee fans. In the first quarter the Warriors were able to hold Warsaw scoreless, with fine defense by Mark DeWitt, Tony Hunziker and Eric Beer. However, the offense couldn’t move against a tough Tiger defense and the first quarter ended scoreless. On the first play of the second quarter Eric Sebo carried the ball to the 21 yard line for Warsaw, where he was stopped by Joel Bales. On the next play a completed pass from quarterback Rick Roberts to Rick Louden gave Warsaw its first touchdown. The kick was good, making the score Warsaw 7 — Wawasee 0. Many offensive carries for the Warriors were executed well by Pat Speicher and Ron Dickerhoff, but the time in the second quarter elapsed before Wawasee could score. In the third quarter Wawasee had some trouble, with a fumble, which was recovered by Dickerhoff for Wawasee, but couldn't be moved for the first down. After the punt Wawasee defense again held and the Tigers were forced to turn the ball over, after a failed field goal attempt. The Wawasee offense couldn’t move on the next possession and were forced to kick. Warsaw then scored on a 5 yard run by Tony Deter. The third quarter ended with the score 14-0. Junior Varsity Warriors fall to Tigers 12-0

By SHARON STUCKMAN Monday night’s junior varsity football game at Warsaw had some exciting moments and showed fans some promising young Warriors. On the second play of the first quarter Puckett of Warsaw intercepted a pass from Marshall Boyer to Jeff Thorn. But good defense by Thorn, an encroachment penalty and a Warsaw fumble cost the Tigers the ball. On the next play Puckett recovered a Wawasee fumble on the 13 yard line and ran it in for the Tiger touchdown. The Tiger’s attempt at point after touchdown failed, leaving the score 6-0. In the next series Rick Gerber and Rick Qusick were one yard short of the first down with their carries and Boyer punted. Warsaw then was unsuccessful and they punted to the 30. On the second play of the next series Wawasee recovered their own fumble, but couldn’t run for the first down. The Tigers then seemed to be moving the ball, but were soon stopped short by defensive Warriors, Stuckman and Stump and they fumbled on their own 25 yard line. Turner and Gerber carried for short of a first down and Boyer kicked a 29 yard punt. With three seconds to go in the half Welker intercepted a Tiger
