Sheila Poe dies, thrown when bike collided with car
Sheila Lynnette Poe, 11, r 2 Leesburg, was killed when she was thrown onto the pavement after her bicycle collided with an automobile Friday afternoon, Aug. 22, in Clunette, at 4:23 p.m. Sheila was pronounced dead at the scene by Kosciusko County Coroner Kenneth Wyman. Death was attributed to head injuries Gayion M. Minnick, 61, r 7 Warsaw, driver of the auto, told Kosciusko County police she was driving away from the Clunette Elevator when she observed two bicyclists in front of her. The youths, Sheila and her brother, Bill, were bicycling west on CR 600 N when Mrs. Minnick approached from behind, steered from the west to the east side of the road to pass the youths since there was no approaching traffic. When Mrs. Minnick started to proceed by the youths, the girl reportedly turned her bike and steered it into the path of the auto. When the bicycle collided with the right front fender of Minnick’s auto, the driver told police she stepped on the brake pedal and stopped. The child was thrown 85 feet from the point of impact and her bike landed 60 feet from the car, according to police. The accident occurred 2,400 feet east of CR 500 W on CR 600 N. In talking with police, her brother Bill said he and his sister were on their way home when he saw a car approaching from behind. When he warned his sister to move off the road for an approaching car, the youngster turned her bike to the left and hit the auto. John Hummel, State Police Emerson Neff Feb. 24, 1909— Aug. 16, 1980 Memorial services for Emerson P. Neff, 71, who died in the Palms Health Care Center. Sebring, Fla., on Saturday, Aug. 16, were held in Bethany Church of the Brethren, US 6 New Paris, Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. F. Wayne Lawson officiated. Neff was born on February 24, 1909 in Jackson Township near New Paris, to Raleigh and Amanda (Deeter) Neff. On January 20, 1934, he married the former Alice Rose Roach, Millersburg. She survives. In addition to his widow, other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. William (Eleanor) Hawkins and Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Hawkins, both of Middlebury, Mrs. Herman (Shirley) Hochstetler, Goshen and Mrs. Stanley (Peggy) Warner, Elkhart, two sons, Robert L. Neff, Syracuse and Richard J. Neff, Westland, Mich.; 17 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; one greatgranddaughter and a sister, Mrs. O’Leary (Mary Jane) Doll, Goshen. Trooper Dan Ringer and Coroner Wyman. Sheila was the eighth person to die on Kosciusko County roads this year. Services Monday Sheila Lynnette Poe would have been a fifth grader at Leesburg School. She was bom in Warsaw on October 9, 1968, to Boyd and Shirley (Hite) Poe and had lived in the Leesburg area aP her life. In addition to her parents, survivors include two brothers, Stephen and Billy, at home; maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hite, Warsaw; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Poe, r 2 Claypool; paternal great-grandfather, Amos Marsillette, Pikeville, Ky.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. in the Warsaw Pentacostal Lighthouse Church where she was a member. Rev. Albert Whitaker officiated and burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Walter F. Riffe Jan. 19,1915-Aug. 21,1980 Walter F. (Ted) Riffe, 65, Westhaven Estates, r 5 Warsaw, father of Stephen Riffe, Leesburg, died at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was former operator of a grocery and bait-store at Oswego, several years ago. Riffe was bom in Kokomo on January 19,1915, to Walter S. and Garnett (Mitchell) Riffe. His marriage to the former Mary Cross, occurred on November 24, 1937, in Kokomo. She survives. He was a member of the Kokomo First Baptist Church and had been employed at Delco Radio, Kokomo for 22 years. Additional survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Andrea) Herschberger, Elkhart; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, in the Chamness Funeral Home. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. J Violet L. Scott Violet L. (Stanfield) Scott, formerly of North Webster, died Thursday, Aug. 21, at 8 a.m. in Englewood, Fla. Mrs. Scott was employed at the North Webster Post Office for several years. She is survived by her husband Paul Scott. Dettwilers' lose grandson Mr. and Mrs. Ivy Dettwiler, Syracuse, were recently called to Kenosha, Wis. by their son, Ivan, because of a death in the family. Dettwiler’s grandson, Michael, 16, was riding his bicycle when a car ran into him from behind. Michael was killed instantly.
Viks ib*' ■ I Donald L. Ruple June 16,1918 — August 24,1980 Donald L. Ruple, 62, 913 S. 10th Street, Goshen, was pronounced dead on arrival at Goshen Hospital on August 24. He was transported by ambulance aidmen after becoming ill at the Maplecrest Country Club Golf Course. Cause of death was an apparent heart attack. He was born on June 16,1918, in Nappanee to Carl and Suzie (Browning) Ruple. He married Kathleen C. Hershberger on August 10, 1941. She preceded him in death on February 18, 1980. At one time the Ruples operated the store at Hastings. They lived in both the Milford and Syracuse communities prior to moving to Goshen. He was an employee of the Pillsbury Mills, Inc. until 1963 when he joined Starcraft as a purchasing agent at the Emma Plant. Ruple was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran and a member of Maplecrest Masonic Lodge 566 Nappanee and Scottish Rite, South Bend. He is survived by his stepmother, Mrs. Boyd Ogle, Nappanee; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Paul (Mary Jane) Lantz, Syracuse; and a brother-in-law, William Stewart, New Troy, Mich. Services were held at 10:30 a.m., August 27 with the Rev. Charles Lindsay officiating. Memorials may be directed to Maplecrest Country Club.
Ezra Beer, retired Milford farmer, dies early this morning
June 16,1896 — Aug. 27,1980 Death claimed Ezra Beer, a well-known Milford farmer, at 1:55 a.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 27) in the Goshen Hospital. Beer, 84, had been ill for six days prior to his death. Born in Mansfield, Ohio, on June 16, 1896, he was a son of Simon and Kathryn (Meister) Beer. He married Luella Haab in 1916. He was a member of the Milford Apostolic Christian Church. Surviving are the wife; four sons, Howard, Maurice, Carlton and Jesse, all of Milford; three daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Viola) Ray Essig March 31,1917 — Aug. 26,1980 Ray Essig, 63, 63287 CR 19, Goshen, died August 26 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He had been a patient there for three weeks. Essig was a lifetime resident of Goshen and was bom to Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Haxel Burns) Essig on March 31, 1917. He married Bonnie Blair, June 4,1937. He retired from Railway Mail Service and was a member of The Plymouth Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Essig; three sons, Larry and Thomas, both of Goshen and Richard, Syracuse. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one brother, Jay, Goshen. Friends are invited to call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday), 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at West Goshen cemetery.

Woman killed when aircraft crashes
Oct. 16,1933 —Aug. 25, 1980 Patricia Ann Knight, 46,103 W. Purl St., Goshen, was killed Monday evening, Aug. 25, in the crash of an experimental aircraft in rural Elkhart County three miles, south of Millersburg. The crash occurred at 7:40 p.m. Mrs. Knight was flying a single-engine “Flybaby” owned by Don Haydon, Goodspring, Tenn., formerly of the Syracuse area. The plane was anchored at the Lowell Farrand residence which is located next to the Adrian Zollinger farm where there is a private air strip. Mrs. Knight had received her pilot’s license in February 1979 and had reportedly flown “Flybaby” previously. She took off from the Zollinger air strip located at 12030 CR 148. The strip is located east of US 33 and runs parallel to CR 148. Zollinger had taken off in his own plane prior to Mrs. Knight and told investigating authorities he witnessed the crash. He said he had entered the downwind leg of a landing pattern to the airstrip when he saw the experimental plane at the east end of the strip. Zollinger said he only saw the plane for about two seconds before it crashed and estimated he was about one mile away. The Jackson Township ambulance was called to the scene and aidmen transported Mrs. fcCnight to Goshen Hospital where she was pronounced dead by Dr. Donald Minter at 8:15 p.m. In an autopsy Tuesday in the hosptial, Elkhart County Coronor Marvin Riegsecker ruled death was caused by a basal skull fracture and internal injuries. Investigators for the Indiana State Police and the Federal Aviation Administration wree at the scene Tuesday morning in an attempt to determine the exact cause of the crash. Funeral Thursday Funeral services for Mrs. Knight will be held at the YoderCulp funeral home, Goshen, at 1:30 p.m Thursday. Rev. Richard Dolby will officiate. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m tonight (Wednesday) at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Violett cemetery, Goshen, folloiwng cremation. Knight was born on October 16, 1933, in New Buffalo,

Friends may call at the Mishler Funeral Home in Milford after 7 p.m. tonight, after 1 p.m. on Thursday and until one hour prior to the funeral. Services will be held in the Apostolic Christian Church at 10 a.m.‘ Friday. Rev. Orville Ringger of Bluffton will officiate. Burial will be in the Milford cemetery. Richard Schlagenhauf Richard Schlagenhauf, 45, 1907 Pemberton, Fort Wayne, died yesterday, August 26, at a summer home from a selfinflicted gunshot wound. The Schlagenhauf family was at the “Pines” Lienhart residence, r 2 Syracuse, on Lake Wawasee. According to police he had been despondent for almost one year. Schlagenhauf was pronounced dead when the Syracuse EMS arrived at the scene at 1:10 p.m. He was transported to Goshen Hospital. On September 7, 1956, she was married to Arthur Knight, who survives. Additional survivors include three daughters, Pamela and Deborah, both of Goshen and Cheryl, at home; a brother, Donald Weishaupt, Opelika, Ala.; and three sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Norma) Pogorski, Michigan City, Joan Weishaupt, New Buffalo, Mich., and Mrs. John (Mary Lou) Guthridge, La Porte.

Monday, Aug. 25 — An elderly woman was transported from her home to Goshen Hospital for admission. Syracuse EMS The Syracuse EMS responded to several calls this week. John G. Simmons, 73, Havoline Trailer Park Lot 21, P. O. Box 91, Syracuse, was feeling ill on Aug. 20 and had an elevated temperature. He was transported by the EMS to the Veterans Administration Hospital, of Fort Wayne. Miriam Orten, 35, 72833 CR 29 Lot 10, Syracuse, arrived at the fire station on Aug. 20, itching, with no rash. She was advised to see the family doctor as soon as possible. Renee Radcliff, 18, r 1 box 157, Warsaw, needed the ambulance at the Premiere Corp, on Aug. 21. She injured her thumb on a punch type machine and was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Dorothy Sims, 74, 600 North Indiana, Syracuse, became ill on Aug. 21, in the evening. She was transported and admitted to Goshen Hospital. Leonard Cripe, 71, 507 North Huntington St., Syracuse, developed chest pains on Aug. 21. The North Webster EMS transported him to Goshen Hospital. Clara Clevenger, 69, r 3 Syracuse, requested ambulance assistance at Highland View Gardens on August 22. She was ill and under doctor’s care. Clevenger was transported to Kosciusko Commuity Hospital. Bruce Rookstool, 17, r 5 box 112, was injured while playing football at the Wawasee High School on August 22. North Webster EMS transported. Clair Rodeffer, 72, 203 Park Lane, Harpe, 111., needed an ambulance on the first road north of Griffith’s Marina on August 22. Rodeffer was transported to Goshen Hospital. Bowen Center needs volunteers
The Bowen Center for Human Services in Warsaw is seeking volunteers to serve as van driver, tour guide and on the partial adjunctive staff. A van driver is needed on Wednesdays when various clients travel to different activities in the area. A driver is needed who will drive them from the Bowen Center to the activity and back. The van is provided. A person who likes people is needed to conduct tours of the Bowen Center. He or she must be available days when needed. Orientation is given. If you enjoy working with people, this program will allow you to work directly with people while assisting staff members. A half-day is required. Call the

ATTEND CAREER CAMP — Marcia Taylor, center and Pamela Oswald, right, were guests of their sponsoring Wawasee Kiwanis Club at the club’s regular meeting Saturday, Aug. 16. The girls attended the Indiana State Police Career Camp at Indiana State Campus in Terre Haute, July 13-18, with 67 other girls from all over the state of Indiana, guests of their local Kiwanis Clubs. Miss Oswald, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Oswald, Syracuse and Miss Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Taylor, Syracuse, attended eight hour a day classes and seminars similar to that of police officers. The classes pertained to law, criminal justice, snakes, attack dogs, karate, hypnosis, undercover work and rifle range instruction. The courses were taught by attorneys, judges, police officers. F ederal Bureau of Investigation and prosecutors. Included in their daily routine were physical fitness exercises, plus time to relax playing sports and swimming. A highlight of the week was a 2 a.m. rousting from bed to view a motion picture of traffic accidents. Their week ended with an awards ceremony honoring the high achievers in testing over the material that they learned plus their physical training. Bowen Center Art Show & Sale
Volunteer Services of the Bowen Center for Human Services in Warsaw has scheduled an Art Show and Sale for October 4-5. 'Die show is open to staff, volunteers, clients and local artists for exhibiting. Paintings only, any medium, will be accepted for exhibiting. The show and sale will be open to the public and free of charge. The Art Show is a natural extension for the Art Therapy Program at the Bowen Center which was developed by Sister Marie Arteal, O.L.V.M. Paintings will be hung on the patio, upstairs lounge, downstairs lounge, activity room of Partial Hospital and hallways. There will be an art procurer on hand at all times and there will be no charge to the exhibitor.

Another accident at Parker and 30 A North Webster woman was involved in an accident on August 25 at Parker Street, in Warsaw. Brenda L. Iden, 18, North Webster, reportedly turned from the westbound lane of US 30 and collided with the left side of another car Donald D. Smith, 29, of Warsaw, driver of the second vehicle, was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital with a bump on the head and a stiff neck.

SCHISLER, Jennifer Elaine Bob and Debra Schisler, box 263A r 3, Syracuse, announce the birth of their daughter Jennifer Elaine. She was born at Goshen Hospital af9:l9 a m on Aug. 26. Jennifer weighed six pounds and was 19 inches long. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Kaufman, Nappanee and Barbara Kauffman, Syracuse, are the maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Schisler, Cromwell, are the paternal grandparents. Maternal great-grandfather is Forrest Plank, Syracuse, paternal great-grandparents are Dolores Cooper, Muncie and Clarence Reidenbark, California. Jennifer has a three year old brother, Bobby.
Letters of invitation will be sent to local artists and the event will be publicized through handouts, posters, notices to colleges, art galleries and art leagues in all five counties in the Bowen Center catchment area. Any artist may exhibit and application forms are available at Volunteer Services at the Bowen Center. Artists may also phone the center and an application will be sent upon request.
