Dickerson leads North to victory

Wawasee High School’s new head football coach Myron Dickerson lead the North, All-Star football team to victory last Saturday in Bloomington. Dickerson, who comes to Wawasee from North Side in Fort Wayne, had his signal-caller Scott Brown with him as well as Terry Lymon who ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to give the North the 17-7 edge. The South held a 7-3 lead in the final period. Lymon, a 170 pound running back, scored the North’s

Baton competition next week in Seattle, Wash.

Picture a baton soaring 30 feet into the air, its twirler executing daredevil moves with skill and coordination in time to music and then catching the baton with aplomb and style. Hard to imagine? Not to thousands of young people who’ve been practicing such athletic, balletlike maneuvers all year for the biggest baton twirling contest of 1980. Webster's travel team ties with Milford for Ist The North Webster Major League travel team tied with Milford’s travel steam for first place in the softballl tourney. North Webster defeated Syracuse 22-0 in the last game of the season. The top girls in batting averages were Lisa Plumb, .739; Denise Stump, .733; and Belinda Whitridge, .695. Denise Stump was named the outstanding defensive player. Camelot team places in state ski championships Results for the Camelot Ski Team from the Indiana State Water Ski Championships held at Camelot Lakes July 26 and 27 are as follows: Jerry Hickman received first in overall competition but received second place in slalom, fourth in tricks and first in jump. Marcia Jochim placed second in all four divisions and Cheryl Manning placed third in jump. Todd Smith was second in overall competition and in jump, but placed fifth in tricks and fourth in slalom. He participated in the boys’ division. Paula Smith participated in the junior girls’ division and placed second in all four categories. Brad Smith, who was in junior boys’, received second place in jumping. Clark Smith, placed fifth in senior men’s slalom and Tim Blackburn was fourth in boys’ jump.

<TF Ladies \J / 3 Golf jjf/ \ L ResM,ts ]/ SOUTH SHORE The play of the day on Tuesday at the South Shore Golf Course was “T” and “F.” Brenda Kuhn and Ethel Hughes tied for first in the nine hole play. Irma Sink, Pat Banker, Ginny DeWitt and Rosary Burbank ended play in a four-way tie for second place. Ellie Caudill took first place honors in the 18-hcle play. Bonnie Cantwell was second and Jackie Wortinger and Gloria Stoffel tied for third. MAXWELTON Play of the day at Maxwelton Ladies Golf Club of the 18 hole players were Three Man Best Ball. Two teams tied for first place honors. The first team includes: Betty Kline, Barb Kay and Ginny Lomont. The second team is comprised of: Dora Nelson, Nedra Jones and Marge Newcomber. Carla Newcomber had low putts. The nine hole winners for the Four Man Best Ball team were: Pearl Miller, Dot Stahly, Sara Zarse and June Lantz. BOULDER BELLES Winners in the A flight at the Big Boulder Golf Course when the Boulder Belles met last week, were Pat Middaugh, low gross; and Jeanette Van Dyke, low net. B flight winters were Lana Drake, low gross;; and Rita Irvin, low net. Low putt winner was Pat Parks.

Alspaugh set up the first score of the game as he went 20 yards on three carries. A short time later the team was on the five-yard line and Northrop’s Brian Thomson kicked a field goal to put the North in front 3-0. Thomson also kicked the extra points after each of the touchdowns.

A large number of young athletes are expected to gather to compete in the 22nd annual U. S. Grand National Baton Twirling Championships, August 4-9, at Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, Wash., also competition from 11 countries will gather August 1011, 11, at the arena to determine the top baton twirlers in the world at the first World Baton Twirling Championships. Countries participating in the world baton twirling championships are: Germany, France, Belgium, panada, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, England, Scotland, Japan and the United States. LWBA board meets July 28 The board of directors of the Lakeland Women’s Bowling Association met Monday evening, July 28, at the Syracuse home of secretary-treasurer Kathryn Knisley. There were eight members of the board in attendance. Shelly McKee, first vice president, opened the meeting. Local association bylaws and tournament rules were reviewed. Women’s International Bowling Congress rule changes were discussed. The annual fall association meeting for all members has been scheduled for Monday, Aug. 4. at 7:30 p.m. at Wawasee Bowl, south of Syracuse on SR 13.

Prospective football players must have physician's report The Milford Junior High football coach, Tony Clouse, announced that all boys planning to participate in junior high football must have a valid physician’s report on file prior to the first football practice on Thursday, Aug. 14. The practice will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Milford Junior High School.

BJr A b| El OUTSTANDING CAMPER — Sandy Payne, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Payne of North Webster, received the Outstanding Camper Award at the Wawasee Basketball Camp July 7-18. She also received the Free Throw Award, One on One Award and Speed Shooting Award. The Wawasee Basketball Camp was held at Wawasee High School under the direction of Barb Brouwer. Sandy will also attend the Hoosier Basketball Camp at Bledsoe’s Beach on James Lake August 4-9. This will be her fifth year to attend. Other North Webster girls attending the Hoosier Basketball Camp are Denise Stump, Anita Swope and Chris Richards. Slow pitch tourney set at Pierceton There will be a men’s slow pitch softball tournament at the Pierceton park on August 23 and 24.
