Letters to the editor
I was really upset
Mr. Myrick and members of the Syracuse Town Board: After some deliberation, I feel compelled to write this letter to you. On Thursday, about 1:30, I observed two neighborhood boys lifting up bottoms of grocery carts (?) and slamming them down on Poplar Street, which was just repaved about two months ago. After watching for a few seconds (and they did it over and over again) I called the police. Well, the police didn’t come down here immediately, but when they did, do you know what happened? NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING! They just drove right on by. It made me sick to watch these boys doing this, but when the police didn’t bother to do anything about it, I was really upset. Don’t they realize that Mother Nature and the elements will ruin this road soon enough, these boys don’t need to help it along! Is there some logical explanation as to WHY nothing was

done? Are the police afraid of 14 year old boys? Is this how our tax dollars are being wasted? By the looks of this street, you would think it was two years old, instead of two months. Do you, Mr. Myrick, or any of the board members ever drive down these city streets, just to check or observe what exactly is going on in this town? Joy E. Nolan Wawasee Village Can America wake up? Dear Editor: Hear Dr. Carl Mclntire on Cable Tel. Via Com Star D 2 transponder No. 7 Warsaw and most county seat towns have Cable TV. connection service. Dr. Mclntire is greatly enthused by this favorable turn of events especially because the big enemy of free speech the FCC can not in-
terfere with cable T.V. programs. So Dr. Mclntire can proceed with his biblical exposure of the greatest enemy to Christ’s teaching and God’s word, namely Communism which has included the following helpful, cooperative deceitful organizations such as detente; Salt,l & II; liberalism; socialism, collectivism; secularism; humanism; lemisim; and Marxism culminative in liberation Theology which is in reality a revolutionary effort to change our free enterprize, free speech, Capitalistic American system over to the Russian atheistic dictorial system where we the people cannot even own our,own home and places of business and are completely controlled by the Government. Wake Up America, Let’s fight it now while we have a chance to ballot. If this Liberation Revolutionary program is successful and America should fall into Russian or Chinese control with the help of Cuba’s devil and satin’s right hand man Fidel Castro, America will really be engulfed in a dark
cloud with the only light filtering through will be that of God’s Word from the under ground or prison camps of Christians subjected to starvation. Hear Dr. Mclntire each morning 6-6:30 a.m. when he exposes how Russia is using false K.G.B. clergymen to control the church organizations in America with the WCC and NCC opposed by the ICCC. Food safety important
Whether to a picnic, outdoor meal, or reception, food safety is important. Summer and family parties seem to go together, but the hot weather may create food problems. Bacteria causes food poisoning. All they need to grow is the right combination of time and temperature. Bacteria grow best in lukewarm foods and are not destroyed by freezing. So watch the food temperature! Salmonellosis is one of the major food-borne illnesses affecting man. Millions of people are affected by salmonella each year. Many cases are not even reported because people assume that they have had an upset digestive problem or a case of the “flu bug.” There are many reasons for the increasing incidence of salmonella. We’re eating out more than ever before and sometimes unsanitary conditions exist in quantity cooking and many homemakers are not aware of the problems involved in food safety at home. HOMEOWNERS Moving? Make your first move a plan to transform the new house into a new home. To turn bare into beautiful, start with walls and Windows. Paint and wallpaper offer an inexpensive and endlessly flexible way to create an effect. Or, for drama, panel a wall or cover it with fabric.

Salmonella bacteria may be found in poultry, meat and meat products, eggs and egg products, fish, shellfish and oysters. Freezing does not kill salmonella, or any other bacteria; it only prevents its multiplication. During the summer months, salmonella food poisoning is usually associated with salads and meat mixtures containing mayonnaise. Contrary to old wives tales, mayonnaise is not to blame for bouts of food poisoning. Research conducted at Purdue University revealed that mayonnaise slows the growth of salmonella. Bacterial growth is inhibited by acid and mayonnaise is acidic because one of the main ingredients is vinegar. Salad dressing usually is even better at slowing the rate of bacterial growth than mayonnaise, because it is more acidic. The storage temperature, length of

Beginning last week, the structure is having the marble trim reset and tuck-pointing. The bank sign at the corner of SR 13 and Main Street has been removed and a new one could take its place soon. The project is expected to be completed sometime this week. (Photo by Kim Hieber)
Three injured Three persons were injured when two cars collided at the intersection of SR 15 and Emeline Street in Milford on Sunday night, July 27, at 11:57. Cynthia L. Clever, 17, r 5 Syracuse, was traveling east on Emeline and reportedly stopped for the light at the state highway, then pulled into the path of an oncoming car. The second car, operated by Wayne 0. Christner, 43,56944 CR 33 Middlebury, was traveling north on SR 15. Christner said he started to enter the intersection and noted the Clever car was stopping, it then pulled into the intersection and his vehicle struck the Clever auto broadside. Clever suffered lacerations to the face, Christner suffered a laceration to the right leg and Nancy Boyer, 36, r 2 Middlebury, complained of pain in her face, right arm and side. All were transported to the Goshen Hospital. Milford Marshal David Hobbs and deputy Randy Veach investigated and set damages to the entire passenger side and frame of the Clever vehicle at $3,000 and damages of SBOO to the front of the Christner vehicle.

storage time, and type of meat used (processed or home cooked) have more to do with food-borne infection than mayonnaise. But don’t let these findings lull you into a false sense of security. Even though the growth of salmonella is retr- 4 ?d, it is not prevented. Preventing food poisoning is based on three principals: (1) cleanliness of utensils, work surfaces, and hands to avoid contamination; (2) keeping hot foods hot (above 140'F) and cold foods cold (below 40°F); and (3)not allowing foods to stand at room temperature for more than two hours. Remember if meat is left for too long in a warm place, even though the growth of food poisoning bacteria is slower, you still can get mighty sick. So, take care to keep foods refrigerated and avoid eating those that have been held at room temperature for more than two hours.
V HE COULD TAKE IT - CAN YOU? A business failure at 22, he accumulated another stake and tried it again. His partner drank up the assets in two years’ time and left him deeply in debt. He refused to take bankruptcy and on his thrity-ninth birthday paid off the last dollar of his indebtedness. Offered a job which required that he have certain equipment, he secured the latter by borrowing money but before he could go to work a creditor levied on the equipment. Completely broke and looked upon by his friends as a failure, he was further crushed at this time by the death of the one woman he had truly loved. Ten years later he tried politics. Elected, he worried through two short terms and was thrown out by the voters. After a dozen more years of constant defeat, he was elected president of the United States. Miner informed the members of the progress of handling bad check complaints. The program which starts with a citation to the offender informs them that his office is aware of the bad check and they are requested to contact him or make the check good. Miner stated that the program has had great results and in the long run will help to alleviated heavy court dockets, save money and help merchants to get restitution for bad checks. Also present at the meeting were the Wawasee Kiwanis Little League team members who were treated to breakfast and the program by the members and president of the club. Jack Oswald. Shown with Miner is President-elect Clair Mohler.
