SUMMER
How about a mini-vacation in Chicago
By JERI SEELY If you are looking for a minivacation spot close to home why not try Chicago? My husband, Bud, and I recently combined a minivacation with the Lions International Convention and enjoyed the Windy City and many of the things she has to offer. Chicago is the outgrowth of an Army post. Fort Dearborn, which was established on August 7,1803, near where the Michigan Avenue Bridge crosses the Chicago River. It’s hard to believe that Chicago was once a brawling cow town. It was that and a railroad center with 4,170 persons when it became a town on March 4,1837. Bud and I stayed at the Bismark Hotel on Randolph Street, just a few blocks from the heart of the city. The hotel has lost its glamour but at one time must have been one of Chicago’s finest. The decor showed it had been built at the turn of the century and the Indiana breakfast in the hotel’s pavilion revealed what must have been an elaborate theater a few decades ago. Some 400 Indiana Lions were seated in the huge room, which could have held many more. The ceilings and walls were ornate and a little imagination place you at the turn of the century in a room full of lovely ladies and gentlemen dressed elaborately as they attended an opening night performance. The present population of Chicago is over 3.5 million. Chicago proper covers 227 square miles with the city being 21 miles wide and 26 miles long. It still has the world’s largest and busiest railroad center. Chicago has much to offer the convention goer and the summer visitor. The city is located on the
shores of Lake Michigan with the world’s tallest building located a short distance from a yacht harbor. Tower Visit A Must Everyone who visits Chicago should consider a visit to the observation tower of one of the taller buildings a must. The Sears Tower, located at the southwest corner of the Loop, was completed in 1974 and is headquarters for Sears, Roebuck and Company, the world’s largest merchandiser. Therefore it is fitting the 110-story, 1,454 foot high tower is the world’s tallest building and the world’s largest private office building. In 55 seconds our elevator climbed to the 103rd floor where the observation level is located. On the day of our visit you could see 20 miles, with the view being breathtaking. The tower houses 7,000 Sears employees, 8,000 tenants and 1,500 commercial, public or building service employees. Another place in Chicago that offers a breathtaking view is “Big John.” The 100 story John Hancock Center dominates the Magnificant Mile and is the world’s largest all electric residential office building. The structure towers 1,186 feet above Michigan Avenue and includes 705 apartments, 28 floors of office space and parking for 1,400 cars as well as a bank, five restaurants, a department store, swimming pool, skating rink, unique shops and sky-high observatory. Tiger Muskie in Indiana Waters Several northeast .Indiana lakes are slated for Tiger Muskie stockings by the Department of Natural Resources this year. Cree lake, north of Kendalville; Adams Lake in LaGrange County; and Stueben County’s Fox Lake were recently stocked. Additional stock plans are for Noble County’s Loon Lake and Whitley County’s Round and Blue lakes near Churubusco. Surveys for the DNR this summer failed, indicating that muskie stockings must be low. Fishermen have reportedly caught muskies this year from these lakes, however. Loon Lake currently holds the state record of a 21 inch Tiger Muskie caught last fall. Since then, the legal size limit has been raised to 30 inches. The 1978 stocked muskies should now be reaching this length. Any fisherman catching a legal-size Tiger Muskie should report it to a local conservation officer or contact the Tri-Lake Fisheries station for verification.
Charlie Brown provided excellent entertainment
EDITORS NOTE Since "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown'" is a play for kids of all' ages, regular M-J reviewer Wiley (Bill) Spurgeon drafted his eldest son, Whitney, 15. to dothis week's review Whitney has appeared in plays for Young Actors Workshop and Northside High School in Muncie, has directing experience, and was a member o? lost year's Enchanted Hills technical crew; he is a member of the International High School Thespians Society, By WHITNEY SPURGEON It’s too bad that “You’re a Good Man, Charlfe Brown”, last week’s production at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse, couldn’t have played longer than one week. It provided an evening of excellent entertainment done on a professional level. ? The play, based on Charles M. Schultz’s comic .Strip “Peanuts,” requires both a iltrong cast and a good orchestra, and the EHP company certainly didn’t sag in either department. tA key to this show’s success was not a person who played a person but rattler a person who Clayed a dog. Snoopy, portrayed y Esau Histone, gave an untying performance full of jokes, dance and sorg. Even the few times when tte show sagged — more the fault; of the script than the cast — Mr Hislope was there to pick up the tempo. And when this reviewer t lought he had seen the full extend of Mr. Hislope’s OUT, SPOT! To remove rug spots, make a paste of cornstarch and greasesolvent spot remover. Rub it on rug stains i md vacuum when it dries.
Here the world’s fastest elevator, 1,800 feet per minute — the men in our group timed this climb too but I have forgotten how much under a minute it was — carries visitors to the 94th floor observatory. We visited this observatory at night and the 50mile view of the city at night was beautiful. A visit to one or both of these towers is a must while visiting Chicago. Water Tower Driving down Michigan Avenue one finds the road divides to go around an old building — The Water Tower. Civic pride prevented the landmark from being torn down when Michigan Avenue was laid out. Built in the late 1860 s, it has become a landmark and is one of the fewbuildings to survive the Chicago Fire of 1871. The tower is 154 feet high and is made from limestone quarried near Joliet, 111. It is this tower that gave its name to the Water Tower shopping plaza which is located nearby. North of the Loop on Michigan Avenue is the Magnificent Mile, including both “Big John” and

abilities, he proceeded to outdo himself with his final song. "Suppertime,” leaving the audience applauding for more. Also outstanding was John Corona as Schroeder, the musical genius. Mr. Corona showed the perfect combination of timing and characterization it takes to pull off this difficult role. He made Schroeder come off as the tempermental and moody artist he is, and when he spoke it always left an impression on the audience. Don Howard, as Charlie Brown, gave this reviewer a pleasant surprise. He gave Charlie Brown more personality than we have seen in previous productions of this show. Instead of coming across as a klutzy comic-strip dullard, Mr. Howard gave Charlie Brown a real character — one you could both pity and enjoy. Congratulations are due Mr. Howard for making the hardest role-characterization in the play seem the easiest. Linus, played by Dan Jacoby, and Lucy, played by Melissa Bailey, did excellently in their brother-sister roles. Mr. Jacoby’s Linus character was superb, and he showed real talent in the song and dance field, too. Miss Bailey as Lucy showed the crabbiness and aggressiveness needed in the role and displayed a beautiful singing voice. Chris Bellis’s portrayal of Patty was as enjoyable and she had excellent timing as well as delivery. Director of this show was T. Doyle Leverett, EHP’s company manager. If the final product of this show reflects his directing, he should be praised. The orchestra, under the direction of Rich Biever, did a praiseworthy job, as they have in previous productions this year.
the Water Tower. The “Mile” is framed by the Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Building on the riverbank. Another “must” when visiting Chicago is State Street. The State Street mall area is seven blocks long and is a bazaar of stores including Marshall Field, Carson Pirie Scott and many smaller stores., Chicago’s first settler was a black man, Baptiste Point du Sable, a native of Santo Domingo, who built a cabin late in the 18th century near what is now the huge Merchandise Mart where the two channels of the Chicago River meet. It was in this area that the Indiana Lions stood for over two hours waiting to take their place in line in the huge International Parade which moved down Wacker Drive to Michigan and south on Michigan to the Grant Park area where the reviewing stand had been placed. Dressed in our black and white uniforms with the women of the group carrying black and white checkered umbrellas, representing the checkered flags

and the lighting, set the costume crews also did great jobs on the technical aspects of the show. This was, all in all, a most impressive and entertaining show, as all the EHP productions have been this year. While looking forward to the rest of this season’s productions. this reviewer feels a vote of thanks is already overdue the EHP company for entertaining this summer’s playgoers so long and so well.

of the Indianapolis 500, we managed to capture second place honors. Also in our staging area we found Marina City — twin circle apartment towers located on the Chicago River. There are some 900 outside balcony apartments, 20 floors of auto parking and a 10story office building, plus a theatre, shops, restaurants, swimming pool, skating rink and park. Chicago has its Chinatown for those who enjoy a touch of the Orient. The city has a special blend of hospitality as it has a multi-cultural mixture and restaurants all over the city are rich in the heritage of people from many lands. Education And Fun Visits to the John G. Shedd Aquarium, the Art Institute ot Chicago, the Adler Planetarium, Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry can be both educational and fun. We chose Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. History comes alive at the Field Museum where we viewed all types of stuffed animals and

the Indians of North America. We only had a short time to visit the museum and therefore spent most of our time in these two areas while others spent an entire day there and visited the many, many displays and special events there. Among other things we viewed at the Museum of Science and Industry in the time available were a trip down into the coal mine and another through the U--505. The U-505 is very much a part of America’s history. It is the only German submarine that was captured by the American Navy during World War II and the sub and its history prove worth the time spent. As a followup we were shown a film of the actual capture of the sub. Ball Game No trip to Chicago would be complete for the avid sports fan unless it included a trip to one of the town’s ball parks — Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago “Cubs” of the National League or White Sox Park (Comiskey Park), home of the Chicago White Sox of the American League. Sometimes you have no choice. The White Sox were in town so we were off to Comiskey Park to see the “Sox" play California. While the home team was defeated that night one of the players did manage to hit a homerun and the famous scoreboard blew its stack.
