Laison — (Continued from page 1) The water department will be flushing the hydrants once a month to see if this solves the problem. Also Duggins recommended the town purchase some “Rust Rover,” a chemical to put in the wash to get the rust out of clothes. He stated the town of South Whitley has furnished this for their residents, since they have the same problems. The cost for the chemical is $4 for a pint or pint and a half. Department Reports Tom Gilbert, director of Syracuse Civil Defense, requested some assistance from the Town of Syracuse in the way of funds. He stated the last storm which hit July 5 completely wiped out all the funds the defense had. The civil defense operates on donations and also receives S2OO from Turkey Creek Township each year. Bill Hess, board member, stated the town has had a civil defense for a good many years and they have done things around town. He added he thought the town, in some way or another, should do something for them. Reed stated the board could give Gilbert the authority to purchase gas up to a certain amount in dollars. A limit of SIOO was approved for the civil defense to use on gasoline for their equipment and are to get in touch with Robert Houser concerning where to get the gasoline. Also, Gilbert requested if the gas at the Civil Defense building could be put in the town’s name. The board stated to get the facts and figures together and submit it to the board and they will look into it. Gilbert introduced Sonia Creighton, Kosciusko County Civil Defense Director, who informed the board the only was the civil defense could receive state and federal funds was if the area was declared a disaster area. She also stated she wanted to commend the board in helping the Civil Defense. “I realize this is only an emergency organization and you only think about them in times of emergencies.” She added she was glad to sit at the meeting and hear good comments coming from the board. Houser requested to advertise for bids on a new police car and to open the bids at the September meeting. He was given the go ahead since funds are available. Joe Anderson, captain of the Emergency Medical Service, was given approval to purchase equipment for the ambulance through their funds. The purchases would cost between $l5O- - The plans for the Turtle Bay project were approved for the second section to hook up to the town sewer. The board approved the plans on the recommendation of Duggins and the project will be subject to approval upon completion. Also the Oakwood Park Project has been corrected by SewerTech, Fort Wayne and has been dried up. Although Duggins requested the system not be accepted until he sees how the lift station works. During the last regular meeting the board approved the purchase of some lift station motors to keep as spares. Duggins reported they were too late in purchasing the motors and requested the lift station be switched over to a three phase system which would cost S2OO more than the purchase of the spare motors. An unconfirmed quote received by Duggins was $2,877 to completely change the system over. The board requested confirmed quotes and will look into the request. Advertisement will be placed in local newspapers for the bids on the old town pumper. The bids will be opened at the August 18 meeting. The fire department was also given permission to send the advertisement to other places but the legal advertisement will state subject to prior bids. Look At Budget Board members took a look at the budget prepared by ClerkTreasurer Cynthia Fry before its first publication. She explained the budget which will be advertised is not what the budget will be. She added that if the budget is high it can be cut, but if it was low, money could not be added. On September 3,4, and 5 railroad crews will be in Syracuse to rebuild the SR 13 crossing according to information received by Reed. Also information was received by M. D. Wessler who stated he is working on the federal grant for EPA.
