The importance of these matches may be lost on those who do not follow wrestling closely. These teams will be representing their states in the national finals in lowa, which is the largest wrestling tournament in the world. If that isn’t enough to excite local sports fans, the added fact that several local wrestlers may be on the team should. Wawasee’s Kevin Walker, Gary Gerencser and John Stuckman with Warsaw’s Scott Hutcherson and Chris Koehler, will be at Martinsville this Saturday, July 19, trying to qualify for the team. The lowa tourney is the only national tourney where qualifying is necessary. From each state 33 wrestlers, three in each weight class, will make the trip. Those attending the WHS Wawasee matches will see two state champions participating in each weight class. There will be some national champions present. The caliber of wrestling to watch is unmatched by anything previously held in this state. The Michigan team will be training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, next week. Indiana team head coach, Charles Ford of Laporte, indicates that they were very pleased that facilities as fine as Wawasee’s would be found for the Indiana team. The opportunity for local boys of all ages to see this type of competition here should be a big boost for the sport. All matches will feature the Olympic freestyle wrestling form which stresses conditioning and knowledge of the various wrestling moves and the counters to them. There is no stalling in this wrestling type, with match excitement from beginning to end. Anyone wishing to assist in any way should contact Stuart Walker, Joe Gerencser or Wawasee wrestling coach Rich Welborn this week. The July 26 matches will have morning and afternoon sessions with the finals held in the evening. Bike clinic at Lakeland Youth Center The Lakeland Youth Center, Syracuse, is sponsoring a bicycle safety clinic and rodeo. This event will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the Lakeland Youth Center. This clinic is for all grade school bikers from Syracuse, Milford and North Webster. The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and Syracuse Police will be assisting. There will be registration of bikes, a safety check, slides and the rodeo. For more extensive stains, wash in hot suds, followed’by a rubbing with lemon juice. Dry in the sun. Keep it clean Save on repair expenses by washing your washing machine regularly. After the washer has filled with warm water, add a gallon of distilled vinegar and run through the cycle.
