TED BAUMGARTNER, who spent 28 years as a Standard Oil bulk tank salesman in the lakes area, went to the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting at Whiting April 22, with a Red Crown globe he had stored in a garage for 12 years atop his station wagon’s luggage rack. Ted said he wanted to "create a little controversy," according to a plug he received in the company’s slick publication, "Amoco Alum.” The magazine even printed his picture with the crown (see accompanying photo). The article went on, “Along the 100-mile journey to the meeting, Baumgartner (who retired in 1968) says he met with puzzled stares from other drivers. When he pulled into an Amoco service station for a fill-up, Some of the old timers knew right away what it was, but not the younger folks . “In the parking lot at the annual meeting. Baumgartners display drew smiles of recognition and reminiscing comments from his fellow annuitants. “'I had been thinking of putting the globe up there for a couple of years, but never got around to it until now.' He notes that the globe will be removed from the luggage rack and stored for special — like next year’s annual meet ing. ” -oLAST WEEK this newspaper listed first place winners of the talent contest at the Mermaid Festival, the release did not contain second and third place winners and therefore left out some of Our Tow n's residents. In addition, the Wawasee cheerleaders won a second place award on Thursday. —o- » DEMOCRAT Darrell Orn was in for some teasing on Sunday when his niece Sharon Keller of Indianapolis presented him with an Orr for Governor button. When this reporter saw him. Orn was wearing the button . . . inside his suit jacket where only Mrs. Keller knew where to find it. Sharon, a MHS graduate and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Dewart of Hickory. N. C.. works in the Lt. Governor's office and thinks her boss should be the next Governor. The Dewarts, by the way. are also visiting here at the present. -oDALE KIRKDORFFER of West Emeline Street is adding to his education by taking courses by mail. He recently successfully completed a course from the Moody Bible Institute on David in the old testament. He is now enrolled in two courses from the American School in Chicago. One is second year algebra and another is trigonometry. —o—- — LAKE resident Lloyd Coy claims he was misquoted in the article in last week’s paper concerning the demolition of 4he old Milford Hotel. It stated Coy could remember when he could get a nickle sack of popcorn in front of Katie Stoller’s restaurant and with another nickle get a small box of chocolates. “That was wrong.” he stated, adding, "I never ever had two nickles at one time in those days.” -o—“NOW COMES a balloon that
says. "Welcome to Canal Days 1980. Bur Oak Library System.” The balloon was found by Harlan Wuthrich in a field three miles west of Milford. Someone took the time to draw an artistic face on the back side of the balloon but they forgot to tell us which state (Michigan*?) Bur Oak is in. -oTOWNSMAN 808 Brown hates to admit it. but he insists he remembers Roy Miles’ Milford night club of the mid-30s as "Club Leßoy,” named after its promoter. It was referred to in a page 1 article in last week’s MailJournal marking the demise of the old Hotel Milford building B. N. (“Jack”) Sharp backs Brown up on the name "Club Leßoy." Sharp says. “1 ought to know, at 20 years of age 1 was a waiter in the club." He says the bpisness lasted about a year and a half. As near as could be determined. the night club, which created quite a flurry on Milford’s Main Street during its aegis, was originally named “Club Leßoy" and later the “Cherrio Inn." Anyone with other information than this, we’d like to hear from you. Leesburg, California men in court Jeffery Mettler, 22. r 1 Leesburg and Stuart Allen Youmans. 21, Hollywood. Calif., appeared before Kosciusko County Superior Court judge Robert Burner. Thursday. July 3. Mettler entered a plea of guilty and an attorney was appointed for Youmans. Mettler pleaded guilty to dealing in a controlled substance, a class B felony, following an agreement with his attorney and the county prosecuter. Under the agreement terms, an additional charge of dealing in a controlled substance, also a class B felony, will be dismissed. He was arrested last October following an undercover investigation by the Indiana State Police over the summer. Youmans, who has been charged with forgery and theft after he allegedly used a stolen credit card to purchase gasoline in Syracuse on June 29. He was appointed a pauper counsel in his case. Advisory board to . discuss revenue sharing funds The Van Buren Township Advisory Board will meet with the Township Trustee Walter Wuthrich at his home at 316 East Catherine Street in Milford Monday, July 21. at 7:30 p.m. The board plans to express views on how the revenue sharing funds, expected to be $14,000 for 1980-81, are to be used. All citizens, especially senior citizens, are invited to attend this meeting.
