Successful first for Wrestling Club
The Wawasee Wrestling Club hosted their first Invitational Tourney last Saturday. June 28, and attracted outstanding high school wrestlers from all over the state. The tourney was sanctioned by the United States Wrestling Federation and was a tune-up meet for their state championship meet at Martinsville in July. The highlight match of the day featured 1980 Indiana state champion Ken Taroli, Hammond, against two-time lowa state champion Steve Knight. Taroli demonstrated how far Indiana wrestling has improved in the last two years as he dominated the match 11-2. Two Wawasee wrestlers emerged as champions. Gary Gerencser, wrestling at 105 pounds, pinned Dan Morris of Indianapolis. Gary was also second in his area of the GreccoRoman Style Wrestling National Championship earlier in the year. Kevin Spry, wrestling in the junior division at 99 pounds, pinned Andrew Wittekind of Culver for the championship. Scott Hutcherson, Warsaw, a 1979 Indiana state high school champion, lost a close match in the finals to Rick Ridenour of Huntington, an Indiana high school semi-state finalist. Plans are being finalized for the third annual Flotilla Road Race, to be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5. The sponsoring Mail-Journal is fast building the Road Race into an area athletic classic. Last year the race drew 230 runners of assorted ages — men and women, boys and girls. There is reason to believe this year’s race will be even bigger and more colorful. Start At City Park The starter’s gun is scheduled to be fired at 5:30, with runners taking part in two events, all stepping off at the same time. The short run — 3.3 miles — will begin at the city park and go around Maxwelton Golf Course and return to the city park byway of North Shore Drive. The long run — 8 miles — will make the above run, then continue around Syracuse Lake. (Note: The course for both events is detailed in the accompanying map.) There will be plaques to first, second and third place in seven men’s classes as follows: 14 years of age and under; 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49. 5059, and 60 and over. In the women’s group there are five classes as follows: 19 and under. 20-29,30-39,40-49, and 50 and over. Each runner will be given a number and will be checked so he or she will know how long it took him or her to make the full run. A $5 entry fee will be charged on the grounds and there will be 200 Mail-Journal Flotilla caps given out to the first 200 runners who are registered. Senator Lugar To Run United States Senator Richard G. Lugar is expected to enter the 3.3 mile race again this year. His registration has been confirmed with Carl Meditch. It is hoped he can hand out plaques as he did last year. There will be plenty of help to make the race orderly and successful. Wawasee High School personnel and their wives will be on hand with Wawasee’s athletic director Carl Meditch serving as race director. Principal Henry Smith will assist in organizing the race, and after everyone is off and running. Smith and Meditch will join in the race. Also having a principal part in the race will be track and cross country coach Jerry Minton. An addition this year will be music by the school’s jazz band to see the runners off and to welcome them in to the theme song offhe-lHUrQovie “Rocky.” David Blackwell, director of music at WawasCe High Scnbol. will conduct the jazz band. \ The Kosciusko County Red Cross will set up a First Aid station in case\ of any emergency and their volunteer workers will be on hand to provide runners with a towel and a cold drink at the end of the race, thanks to Inez Devenney and her Red Cross workers. Others assisting will be Syracuse City Police under Chief Robert Jlauser, county sheriff’s units, the Civil Defense under director Tom > Gilbert, and the EMS ambulance will stand by with director Joe Anderson and his crew at the alert. Half of all entry fees of the event will go to the Wawasee High School athletic fund, according to Arch Baumgartner, publisher of The Mail- " Journal.
