Brownie Troop 193 has court of awards
On Thursday, May 22, first grade Brownie Troop 193 of Syracuse held its end-of-year court of awards ceremony at the Scout Cabin. There were approximately 30 parents and friends in attendance to see the Brownies receive their awards' The eight badges earned by the girls from duties performed during the year were: Discover nature, cookie caper, brownie first aid, hi neighbor, friend maker, ready helper, physical fitness, and your country’s flag. They also received their yearly membership star and Brownie B patch for special duties accomplished as first year Brownies. The ceremony began with the entrance of the color guard, the pledge of allegiance and Girl Scout promise. Color guard attendants were: Melanie Anderson, Lori Boles, Karen Butt, Amy Price, Paige Price and Lori Stiver. The girls entertained their guests with two songs “The Brownie Smile Song” and “Do Your Ears Hang Low”. Badges and membership stars were presented to the girls by their leaders Pat Price, Rowena Impey, and Sharon Boles. A gift was presented to Nikki Jones and Nikki Marsh for perfect attendance and to the assistant leaders so their help during the year. The ceremony was closed by the girls singing “Taps”.
Refreshments of cookies and punch were served. Activities during the past year included trips to a bakery, the library, the youth center for a gymnastics lesson, Goshen Hospital where they saw the “teaching puppets”, The MailJournal, Brownie Revel at Camp Singing Hills, a city-wide Girl Scout roller skating party, and an overnight at camp. They held a Christmas party, had a nurse visit to teach basic first aid, helped fill Christmas baskets for REAL Meal, and visited grade Troop 91. Projects included selling subscriptions and G.S. cookies, making dunk bags and sit-upons, learning about Girl Scouts, planting flowers, making flag decorations and tambourines, and many other activities. The court of awards was the last meeting for this year. Summer activities include marching in the Syracuse Memorial Day Parade, day camp, and weekly overnight camp. How old? The age of an egg can be determined by placing it on the bottom of a bowl of cold water. If it lies on its side, it is fresh. If it stands at an angle it is three days old, and if it stands on end it is at least 10 days old.

Impressive Memorial Day services were held in the Milford and Syracuse communities, with the weatherman co-operating beautifully. A buffet supper was held after graduation exercises at Wawasee High School on Sunday, May 20, honoring Kathryn Diane Bice. Lee Anne Stewart s Dance School, Syracuse, will present “Dancing Round the World,” Friday, June 1 at 8 p.m. in the Wawasee High School auditorium. Lakeland Community School Corporation superintendent Don H. Arnold has received a Ditto Masterfax unit from Susan Weller, cost supervisor and Dave Arnold, personnel manager of the Dana Corporation, Syracuse.
