SAN DIEGO — Record breaking sales and operating profits for 1979 were discussed today at GTI Corporation’s annual stockholder’s meeting. “We ll be paying substantially higher taxes in the future,” said GTI President James K. La Fleur, noting that the corporation’s overall tax rate will approximately triple in 1980. “Our effective tax rate was just 15 per cent in 1979 after accounting for net operating losses and investment credits. But we have used up our tax loss carry forwards, so GTI will be paying ANSWERS ACROSS 1-Stag 21-Be 5-Shod 22-Damp 9- 25-Bantam 10- 29-Ava 12-Tracy Austin 30-Has 14- Aid 31-Ego 15- 32-Tennis stars 16- Eve 35-Arias 17- 36-Eases 19-Knew 37-Taps ANSWERS DOWN 1- 19-Ken 2- 21-Basset 3- 22-Data 4- 23-Avert 5- Stun 24-Mania 6- His 25-Bas 7- 26-Tease 8- 27-Agree 9- 28-Moss 11-Anew 30-Hiss 13-Air 33-Nap 18-Hop 34-Tar

about 46 per cent tax rates in 1980. Consequently, our net profit may experience an early negative impact from that increased tax rate, but we expect our growing pre-tax profits will cause net profit to recover as the year progresses. ” La Fleur also noted that the first quarter earnings ended March 31, 1980 increased to 16 cents per share from 11 cents per share for the same period in 1979 and sales had increased to $5,496,000 from $5,108,000. He said sales to the company’s automotive customers were weaker than in last year’s first quarter, but that sales to the electronics customers continued strong. Having declared the first cash dividend in the company’s history on February 21,1980, GTI finished its 1979 year with net sales of $20,866,000, an improvement of 18 per cent over 1978. Earnings rose to $1,500,393 or 70 cents per share compared to a deficit of 29 cents per share for the previous year. La Fleur also announced at the annual meeting that the company’s regular quarterly dividend of 3 cents per share will be paid on June 13,1980 to shareholders of record May 23. 1980. GTl’s growth in 1979 net sales resulted primarily from sales increases in the company's metal, glass, and electronics product line, the metal and plastic ’ protective component product line, as well as a new component processing equipment product line. Cost of goods sold decreased as a percentage of sales because of improvements in manufacturing productivity. Commenting on the outlook for GTI, La Fleur said that having established a firm financial foundation, the company would begin to capitalize on new markets. “Two unrelated but concurrent events have produced new business opportunities for GTI,” said La Fleur. “One is the development in the electronics industry of the microprocessor. The other is the rapid increase in the cost of energy worldwide. As a result, there are increasing applications of microprocessors in the control of a wide variety of energy consuming devices. The growing demand for such systems and related components represents new market opportunities for GTI.” La Fleur said that GTI had shipped more than five billion parts to customers in 1979, an 8 per cent increase over 1978. At the meeting, a new director, Alvin H. Wineman, Jr., chairman of the board of Wineman Department Stores, headquartered in Huntington Park, CA, was elected to GTl’s board. Since two directors did not stand for reelection, GTl’s board now has a total of five members. GTI Corporation is a multiplant manufacturer of component parts, industrial protective closures, circuitry, and component-processing equipment for the automotive, electronics and computer industries. Corporate headquarters are at 10060 Willow Creek Road, San Diego, CA 92131.
