Tax change for . working moms Some of the changes in the tax law that affect your 1979 tax return, such as the higher personal exemption and increased standard deduction are virtually automatic. But, the rules have been changed on hiring relatives to mind the children of working women. Under the old law money paid to a baby-sitter who was a grandparent or other relative generally did not qualify as a child-care deduction. Now these expenses do qualify as long as the relative isn’t your dependent. The child-care credit is worth a lot to working mothers who take the standard deduction as well as to those who itemize. You can reduce your taxes by up to S4OO for one child under fifteen and up to SBOO for two children or more. Inflation worse than reported? A Washington-based economic research group says inflation is hitting Americans even harder than the government says it is. According to the National Center for Economic Alternatives, the true rate of inflation for the first nine months of 1979 was 17.5 per cent, not the 12 to 13 per cent figure the government has used. The center says the cost of the four major “necessities” — defined as energy, housing, food and medical care — increased at a nearly 18 per cent rate in 1979. These four items, the group contends, account for most of the budget of the typical American family. i
