It happened ... in Syracuse

ONE YEAR AGO. FEB. 14.1979 Last Saturday at Concordia High School the Wawasee Warriors wrestling team was regional runner-up with 100 points, placing close behind Fort Wayne Wayne who scored 107 points. Mark Simpson scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds Friday evening to lead the Wawasee Warriors to an impressive 59-47 win over the North Wood Panthers. The win upped the Warrior record to 11-7, while the Panthers now stand at 7-10 on the season. Lakeland Youth Center, along with the Syracuse Ministerial Association, is promoting a Dartball League. Dartball is essentially baseball, but played with darts. Wawasee hosted a coed meet with Mishawaka last week in which the boys’ and girls’ swim teams were both victorious. The Warriorettes beat Mishawaka Marion 116-96 and the boys won 116-60. The meet completed the Tank Men’s season and the record stands at 7-8. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hornback, r 4 Syracuse, are the parents of a son born at Goshen Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 8. 10 YEARS AGO, FEB. 11,1970 Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bjella, Syracuse, are the parents of a daughter, Deborah Kay, born January 30 in Elkhart Hospital. Deborah, who weighed four

pounds, four ounces at birth was placed in an incubator. Bjella’s have another daughter, Denise, who is seven years old. Snowmobilers have been in for a bad time with the sudden thawing on the lakes. Two went into Wawasee near Martin Levernier’s Saturday night and one went into Harkless Harbor on Friday. Another hit a seawall near the George Hetler cottage also. 20 YEARS AGO. FEB. 11, 1960 Syracuse will have a new street fair early in July according to plans announced by the Syracuse Fire Department and Police Department, who are sponsoring the event. Woman injured as auto goes over bank

Deborah K.‘ Varney, 23, r 2 Leesburg, sustained injuries when her auto went over an embankment after midnight, Sunday, Feb. 3. The accident was on Baseline Road, one mile south of Leesburg. She was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital for cuts on the lower hip and forehead and an abrasion on the right knee.

Syracuse Girls’ Atheletic Association, formed a year ago, held its first Awards Night under the enthusiastic guidance of Mrs. Ray Talmadge, physical education and art instructor, Wednesday, 20 January, in the High School cafeteria.

Kosciusko County Patrolman Thomas Brindle reports Varney was traveling north on Baseline Road and hit a slick spot. The auto went over a three foot embankment and straddled some Conßail tracks. Damage was estimated at SBOO to Varney’s auto. Brindle reported some Conßail tracks were possibly bent in the mishap.

Tom Jacks presented a film entitled "On Guard Bunco*’ to the Wawasee Kiwanis Club at the club’s regular meeting. Hie program involved four ways Con-artists “con” monies from their victims. Jacks stated many victims fail to report these crimes because they are ashamed and are not aware they have been conned. He further stated that widowed elderly people are the most used victims.
