OUR LOCAL apiarian. Ottos Beer, showed your editor and columnist a check he had received for $2,700. He had been given that amount for one load of honey, which would be several thousand pounds of honey. Now your editor toils industriously at least eight hours a day four days a week, often more, and never gets a check even faintly resembling $2.7(M». “I’ll go into the bee business and sell honey." the editor said to herself. The nicest thing about the bee business is that the bees do all the work. They travel miles and miles to gather nectar and pollen from flowers and store it in little cells of beeswax, constructed with the mathematical precision of a civil engineer and architect combined. The bees also make the wax. Not only the honey, but the beeswax is valuable too. and sells for 57 cents a pound. Mr Beer said It is used in making candles, lipstick and various other things Thought the editor, it’s the bet' business for me Os course, one would have to get acquainted with the bees in order to take the honey and beeswax from their houses, called hives. And that’s when the editor began really to think. Bees are said to be friendly little creatures if they know you are not an enemy. But how to prove it to them You just can t go up and shake hands and say “Hello. Bee. I’m your friend " Then a scene from long ago came to mind — the memory of four big boys dashing across a lot with a dozen bees in hot pursuit, boys and bees racing at a speed that would make Nashua. Swaps and Citation hang their heads in shame. The boys had intruded on the bees’ home grounds. Did you ever look a honey bee straight in the eye - ’ It can kx>k at malevolent as an enraged bull By the way. the encyclopedia states that a honey bee has live eyes It also says the jaws of a bet* are like tiny scissors. But their real weapon is the stinger. As the editor read on. en thusiasm for the bee business waned It said a bee sting is seldom dangerous but has occasionally been know to kill At that point, your editor decided to stay in the newspaper business. She likes it. Anyway she would be reluctant to start competition against her friend. Mr. Beer. But oh. that check! — o— ONE OF the most famous pictures of recent times shows six Americans raising the flag on the island of Iwo .lima. One was a Pima Indian boy. Ira Hay nes. He escaped the rain of enemy fire on the island, but after coming home met a fate which many consider worse Ira was addicted to drinking, and ap parently the liquor dealers and his friends •?> did nothing to restrain his appetite A reservation physician says that after a final siege of drinking. Ira Haynes wandered off into the desert and died of exposure What a tragic death for a hero! One would be quite safe in wagering that Ira Haynes' name will not be included in the “Men of Distinction" ad published by a certain liquor company.

SOME PERSONS when meeting some one they may have suspected of being high-hat or stand-offish but who turned out to be friendly , will say. meaning to be complimentary. “She <or he> is so nice and common.” That never sounded quite right to me so I was not surprised to learn that in the South it is considered an insult to call someone “common.” And notice this quotation from the Bible: “God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean."
