Solar heat — an alternative to OPEC

As OPEC continues to increase their rates on oil, a number of people have turned to solar heating instead of the conventional way of heating. Carroll Parmerlee, area distributor for Solar Pak II stated that the interest in solar heat is increasing with each passing day and he pointed out that this type of solar heating system is the type that any do-it-yourselfer can easily instil. The package consists of an inflatable collector, flexible connecting ducts, hardware and the Solar Pak air handling unit which is an easily installed window unit He further remarked that “until recently most solar heating systems have been installed in homes built expressly to accomodate that method of heating, or a costly remodeling project has been necessary to incorporate a solar heating system in an existing structure. Solar Pak, he stated, is portable and can be stored away and out of sight in the warm months. The system is a supplement to present heating systems, much, the same as a wood burning stove, but unlike the stove which requires a goodly amount bf interior floor space and is accompanied by dirt and several hazards. Solar Pak II was invented by energy explorer Lance Crombie of Minnesota. Crombie has a PhD in biochemistry and. the story goes, he got [sick of paying ridiculous heating bills for several winters. 1 so he went out to his garage and invented the first inflatable solar energy unit. It is currently covered by 16 patents. A study conducted over the last 30 winters by the National Weather Service revealed that, in any given winter, the sun shines all or part of 50 per cent of the days. Therefore. it is a reasonable calculation that, with Solar Pak 11. one may save a minimum of 20 per cent on heating expenses. “Solar energy is the only source of energy that, will never be depleted,” notes Parmerlee. “and it is free!” The cost of Solar Pak II is about the same as the price of a major household appliance. What’s more, the government grants a 30 per cent tax credit on it and chances are very good that an increase to 50 per cent will be forthcoming in the near future. The uses for Solar Pak II are almost endless. In addition to homes; farm buildings, construction sites, warehouses, sheds and places of business are but a few of the applications for this solar system. The collector, which resembles a water bed. is moun-

Police theorize that the two break-ins are related. Late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, burglars broke into the Star Store. SR 13S and stole approximately sls in change. Advise negative Be a friend then a host If you’re planning a party to say farewell to the 70 s and greet the 80’s, the AAA-Chicago Motor Club recommends that you be “first a friend, then a host." The club offers these suggestions for year-end partygivers First, if you're serving alcoholic beverages, greet your guests with a drink of moderate proportions. Thereafter, let the guests mix their own drinks They'll probably make the drinks weaker and less often than you would. Second, provide an attractive array of non-alcoholic or lightlyspirited punches along with a buffet Emphasize a variety of dips, snacks and hot dishes rather than an elaborate bar. Get your friends involved in a game so they'll forget about the .next drink and midway through the party begin de-emphasizing drinks and serve filling foods. About an hour before the guests are due to leave, serve a rich dessert and coffee or tea. Contrary to popular belief, coffee or tea won’t sober up anyone, but they're good substitutes for that final "one for the road." Finally, if a guest insists on overimbibing, arrange for him or her to ride home with a sober friend, call a taxi or offer to put that person up for the night. Statistics indicate that nearly half of all highway traffic fatalities involve the consumption erf alcoholic beverages. The most deadly hours for drinking drivers are between 9 p.m. and 2 a m.
