Wrestlers strangle Manchester 45-21

The Wawasee W'arriors wrestling team went sputh Tuesday night and made the climate inside the Manchester gym warmer than before it arrived. The Squires proved to be perfect hosts as they lost the first five matches and could accumulate only four wins during the evening. Once again senior Terry Rinker found himself involved in a feature match and as usually happens he proved equal to the task. Trailing by one point early in the match. Rinker fought back to earn an escape and then take his powerful foe down to earn the victory. Junior Kevin Walker started the victory parade by piling up 12 points before pinning his man with 52 seconds left in the match. Walker’s use of several different moves taught by Coaches Welborn and Hutsell gives local wrestling fans something to look forward to in the meets following Christmas vacation. Sophomore Bill Harting and senior Arnold Garza both found themselves envolved in a test of strength with strong opponents and both had the courage to overcome and pin their op-

JV loses 34-33 heartbreaker

What looked like it might be a long night for the Wawasee Warriors JV team turned into an exciting tournament game Tuesday at Wawasee with the Warriors falling by only one point — 34-33 to the Northridge Raiders. Northridge hit three baskets in a row before sophomore Jay Auer hit the bucket for Wawasee. John Locke put the Warriors in front 11-10 with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter as he hit a free throw. Wawasee took a 23-15 lead into the dressing room at half-time as the Raiders didn’t score until the five minute mark. With 2:25 remaining Auer scored his 10th point of the game. Northridge broke the ice with two free throws in the third quarter. With 4:45 remaining Auer hit another basket. Wawasee’s shooting went cold. The score remained deadlocked at 25-22 for what seemed for ages.

ponents. This was Harting's second win on the varsity and Garza kept his record perfect after five matches. Along with Gary Gerencser. Garza leads the team in victories; Sophomore Jeff Glon is also beginning to show the determination which comes with experience as he rallied from a four-point deficit to win 6-4. It must be said, however, that he was greatly aided by the cheering of the team’s bus driver who explained to him on the way home what he should do differently next time. Several Warrior wrestlers who have had hard matches showed improvement. Jim Salizar came through with a second period pin and Todd Hardy held his man to one point while running up eight on takedowns and near pins. This was the last meet before the eight-team invitational which will be held at Wawasee on Saturday, Jan. 5. This meet will host several of the leading wrestling team in the state and will give local wrestling fans the opportunity to see Garza. Rinker, Gerencser and Walker challange for championships. Final results follow:

Paulus scored the only other Warrior point as he hit a freethrow with 37 seconds remaining. Northridge tied the game and the quarter ended even at 26-26. Kent Stichter put WHS up by one. A foul on J. Hershberger put Steve Koble at the foul line, making one point. With 3:15 remaining Northridge was up by one — 30-29. Again the Warriors went cold. Turnovers followed one after the other. Stichter finally put WHS on top at 31-30, but not for long. Time out was called at 32-31. With 38 seconds remaining Wawasee got the ball, however, a bad turnover gave it to Northridge for an easy layup to make it 34-31. Koble made it 34-33 on a last second shot. Jay Auer led the Warriors with 12 points and Kent Stichter had 10. The team will play in the consolation game at 6:30 tonight (Wednesday).
