Nilah Jonasch remembers friends with holiday cookies
By VICKI HYDE-HICKEY Nilah Jonasch bakes cookies . . . and cookies ... and more cookies. Before the Christmas season is over, Mrs. Jonasch will have baked over 3,000 cookies just this year. And that's a lot of cookies! Why does she bake all these cookies 9 It started over 40 years ago before she married Ed Jonasch and has just grown. "It just started out trying to remember some friends over the holidays and it just grew,” she

says. "Originally I sent batches all over the country, to friends that we had met over the years in our various moves but that list has dwindled down to just three packages that I send out." However, the Jonasches, who live on Dewart Lake, have made so many friends locally that her list has just blossomed over the years. She tries to remember her doctor, dentist, in-laws, people in the office where her daughter used to work in Warsaw . . and the list just goes on and on. The size of the cookie packages vary, many of the tins supplied by a friend who uses old coffee cans which she covers with gailycolored paper. While not claiming to be a nutritionist, Mrs. Jonasch says that she uses a lot of wholesome ingredients in her cookies. She said that several years ago she decided to stop making chocolate chip cookies because "they’re so commonplace". But they’re back on her list by popular demand. Mrs. Jonasch has tried a lot of recipes during the years and is always looking for new ones. Mainly she says that she tries to find cookies that have a life-span of several days, ones that don’t dry out too quickly. How much money has been spent over the years? "Oh, I wouldn't begin to guess; actually, I don’t even think that I'd want to know!” Mrs. Jonasch says that she watches the stores for sales in the fall, trying to buy ahead. The adept baker has shared one of her favorite recipes with us, one which granddaughter Tam-

LOUISA’S LETTER
Dear Louisa, 1 have a neighbor who has a pet dog. She turns him loose every day and he comes over and digs up all of my plants. When 1 told her about it she laughed and said "Dogs will be dogs.” 1 didn't see anything funny about that. What can 1 do? 1 don’t want to make her angry? Gardener--N.C. Answer: Any woman with the least consideration for a neighbor and a friend would not allow her dog to destroy their plants. She should either have a fenced in place for her dog or keep it on a long yard leash. Why don’t you ask her to do one of these things? I AIIIQA
