Iranian crisis prompts new appeal for 55 mph
The growing Iranian crisis and all its political and economic ramifications, has prompted Indiana State Police SuperintenVtent John T. Shettle to appeal to all Indiana motorists for increased voluntary compliance to the 55 mph speed limit. significant decreases in the national traffic death toll since 1974. The Indiana State Police recently concluded a special state-wide traffic enforcement program. Project 55. designed to save lives and to promote more voluntary compliance with the 55 mph speed limit. During the program period, Indiana experienced a sharp reduction in the traffic fatality * increase over 1978 and average speeds dropped. Based on these results, Shettle concluded that special enforcement certainly must be considered an effective traffic safety effort. The energy saving benefits derived from driving 55 have also been widely published. Shettle stated that one source estimates that in one year alone 3.4 billion gallons of vehicle fuel were saved after the 55 mph speed law was passed. It has been further estimated that the average automobile’s fuel consumption increases one per cent for each mile per hour over 55 and trucks increase two percent.
