lakeland Community Schools emergency weather procedure
We are now beginning the season of the year when bad weather can create difficult road conditions for school buses. The decision as to whether or not to have school on a given day is based on several factors. The primary factor is always the well-being of the children. The purpose of the following information is to inform parents and students of the procedures followed during ad weather and to provide information regarding questionable weather situations in our district. Most of the buses begin their routes at 7 a.m. and nearly all drivers are warming up their buses by 6:45 a.m. It is therefore necessary that a decision to call off school be made by 6:30a.m. in order to notify all drivers before they leave home to begin their routes. People who have lived in this area very long are aware that weather conditions can vary considerably between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m. Conditions can also vary between one section of the school district and another. These factors make determining whether or'not to have school a very difficult decision. If there is no question as to the extreme hazardous condition of the roads, school will be called off and announced over radio stations WOWO, Fort Wayne and WRSW, Warsaw beginning at
( l
6:30 a.m. If the decision can be made the night before it will be placed on the radio then as well as the next morning. In case of questionable roads or rapidly changing weather conditions, the Lakeland Community School Corporation will use a two hour delay of buses so conditions may be re-evaluated in the daylight hours before a final decision is made. This delay will also be announced on the radio. If Ice blamed for accidents Several local residents lost control of their autos on icy roads last week. A truck driven by David E. Freed, 22. r 2 Milford, hit a slick spot, spun around backwards and hit a pole. The accident was at 6:25 a.m. Monday. Dec. 3, five miles northwest of Milford on CR 1350 N. Damage was set at $750 by Kosciusko County Patrolman Gerry Moser. In an accident Saturday evening, Dec. 1, a car driven by Wanda M. Luke. 60, Epworth Forest, North Webster, hit a large slick area and went out of control on CR 650 N, near North Webster and stopped hi a ditch. Damage to the auto was set at $250 by Patrolman Moser.
only a two hour delay is announced, the buses and schools will begin two hours later than normal. Any decision to cancel school during the two hour delay will be announced on the radio. Many people are involved in the decision to call off school. Included are administrators, bus drivers, state and county law enforcement officials, and county and state highway departments. It is hoped the preceding information will be helpful during the next few months. The best advice that can be given to parents and students during bad weather conditions, is to listen to the radio. Every effort will be made to communicate in this medium as soon as the information is available. Calling the schools or bus drivers for information can only hinder their ability to function in a situation that is more demanding than under normal conditions. Tires slashed Samuel Welker, Milford, found the rear tires of his pickup truck slashed on the sidewalls, over the week end. The Truck was parked at Goshen Rubber Company in the parking lot between 10 p.m Friday, Dec. 7 and 3 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Police set the damage at SIOO.
