THE MAIL-JOURNAL—Wed., December 12,1979
Remember letter size rules postmaster advises
Milford Postmaster H. C. Colwell is reminding his customers this month to check the size of their envelopes before mailing Christmas cards. Effective last July 15, envelopes must be 3V inches high and five inches long to be accepted for mailing. The new standards, first announced three years ago, are designed to speed up the flow of mail by reducing jam-ups caused by small envelope:} during processing by high-speed automated equipment. Such jams can destroy mail or force costly manual handling of ma il. Last July, a seven-cent surcharge was also placed on firstclass mail weighing on? ounce or less, and single piece Third-Glass Mail of two ounces or less that measured more than 5'4 inches high, lIV inches long or onequarter inch thick. “Most card and envelope makers are only manufacturing the allowable size today, but there may be some older stock still for sale," according to Postmaster Colwell. “We don't want any disappointed, customer during the holidays."
