Pins galore in opening meet

Northern Lakes Conference wrestling powers Wawasee and North Wood clashed Tuesday rn the conference opener for both schools and the meet results was decided by pins in seven of the 13 matches. Wawasee, for the first time in several years, does not have a large number of seniors as five sophomores and a freshman started for the varsity. Two sophomore Warriors. Gary Gerencser and Jeff Glon. started the meet in fine style by pinning their more experienced foes. Glon picked up the fastest pin of the night by putting his man on his back in 45 seconds. Both young men totally dominated their opponents holding them scoreless before putting them away. Warrior fans began to anticipate an easy victory after Terry Rinker and Arnold Garza followed with easy lopsided wins, but that was not to be the outcome. The Warriors managed to win only one more match and wound up on the short end of a 4124 score. The result of the meet seemed to be decided by a pound, a penalty, a missed bus. and a mistake. Assuming this combination of events won’t occur again we can look for an excellent season from our young grapplers. The pound that cost WHS dearly was one of Kevin Walker’s 99 pounds. Unfortunately, Walker wrestles in the 98 pound weight class and the extra pound disqualified him from participating in the meet. This might not have been tragic except the number one backup at that weight. Juan Roa, was not present when the team bus pulled out and was not at the meet. Thus instead of gaining a probable six points the Warriors lost six when young Kevin Spry did his best but was pinned. Later in the meet freshman Ken Turner wrestled his heart out and built an early lead against his senior opponent. Again tragedy struck as youthful impatience was overcome with experience. Driving for an early pin Turner was trapped in a pinning hold and lost. Sign up sheets will be located in the athletic office and at the three junior high schools. Fan buses will leave Syracuse at 5:30 p.m. and Milford and North Webster at 5:45 p.m. At WHS Saturday The Warrjors will host the Triton Trojans on Saturday with games at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $2 at the door and will be presold on Friday from 8 a m. to 3 p.m. in tbe athletic office. Junior high fan buses will leave Milford and North Webster at 6:15. Students should pay the driver 50 cents when boarding. Hot Shots During the half time of the JV and varsity games on Saturday finals will be held in the Wawasee Kiwanis Club’s Hot Shot basketball competition.

The point that hurt was a penalty call by the official. Rusty Morrison, a senior leader on the team, was called for a clasped hands penalty breaking a 2-2 tie and giving his match to his opponent. The Warriors travel to Plymouth Thursday night for a 6:30 meet and will be odds on favorites to take out their frustration at his first loss on the host Rockies.
