Charges pending after two-car collision Friday
A two-car collision Friday evening, Nov. 23, at 6:30 p.m. .involved two Syracuse youths and a Ligonier man. Gary L, Johnson, 29, 900 S Martin St., Ligonier, was arrested for desregarding a stop sign and unreasonable speed. Additional charges in connection with the accident are pending, according to state police. The Syracuse youths, Cheryl A. Miller, 16. 70163 CR 33 Syracuse, driver of the auto and her cousin Jeffrey Miller, 16, 16815 US 6 Syracuse, a passenger, were northbound on CR 33. three miles north of Syracuse, when the accident occurred. Johnson was traveling west on CR 50 and disregarded the stop

sign at CR 33. His 1977 Chevrolet Blazer struck the Miller auto in the right rear panel and then continued across CR 33 striking a tree. Johnson remained pinned in the blazer for a short period of time before freed by firemen. Johnson sustained a broken nose, multipule facial lacerations and a concussion and was transported to Goshen Hospital by the Syracuse Emergency Medical Service. Jeffrey Miller was treated at the scene for a bump on the head. Damage to Miller’s 1978 Ford Fairmont was set at $3,000 and $6,000 to the 1977 Blazer owned by Johnson. At the accident scene were Benton Township and Syracuse Fire Departments. Jackson Township and Syracuse Ambulances, State Troopers George Mains and Mel Eash and Elkhart County Officer Gary Shireman.

Sands named to replace Lee
Richard W. Sand, was formally sworn in as Kosciusko Circuit Court judge, Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. after receiving approval by Governor Otis R. Bowen, M D Kosciusko County Superior Court Judge Robert Burner presided at the ceremony. Sand, 49, r 9 Warsaw, has filled the unexpired term of Judge Gene B. Lee, who resigned effective Monday, 26 to become a federal court magistrate. (Judge Lee was inducted at a public ceremony in the United States Post Office and Federal Building at Fort Wayne, Tuesday at 4 p.m.) Sand has served as pro-tern judge while Lee and his wife, Mary, were vacationing in Greece. He has been a lifetime resident of Warsaw and is a 1948 graduate of Warsaw High School. He has served in the United States Marine Corps from 1948-1952 including duty in Korea. Sand was a Kosciusko County deputy sheriff from 1952-1955. In 1958 he received a bachelor of science degree from Indiana University and he received his law degree from there in 1960. It promises to be a fun-filled holiday but don't forget why we celebrate Christ mas! —o— SPEAKING ABOUT Christmas $ 1,250 damage in two house fires Tuesday Syracuse firemen were called to the Keith Johnson residence. CR 1250 N, Tuesday, November 27. at 4:25 a.m. An electrical cord shorted out, igniting the stairsteps. Damage was estimated at SI,OOO. At 4:09 p.m. Tuesday,* firemen were dispatched to a residence on East Chicago Street behind the Pacer Service Station when a furnace backfired and blew the smokestack off the house. Damage from that incident was approximately $250.

Most of it was gone from the roads by this morning and while the ground was white this morning it didn’t have near the sparkle it had last night. Drivers did get a taste of winter driving this morning and a number of youngsters made snowmen this morning as they waited for school buses to arrive as the white men were scattered about the countryside in the early morning hours.
