FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT — Rev. Paul Fulp, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, explains the advent wreath to his children, Scott, left, Bill, center and Julie, right. The Fulp family all participates in the lighting of the Advent Wreath on the four Sunday evenings before Christmas.
December 2 first Sunday in Advent
The advent season is almost here with the first Sunday of Advent being December 2. On this day many denominations will light the first candle of five, symbolizing the preparation for Christ's pirth. The custom of the Advent, a Latin jvord for “coming,” originated in Germany in the 1500 s and may have started with the Lutheran denomination there. Advent, as an observance, started jn the fifth century in the church of Gaul and in Rome during the sixth century. It first began as a six week observance, one of pennance and preparation for the birth of the Christ Child. Toward the 13th century the observance was shortened to four Weeks. Through the years Advent has come to mean four weeks before Christmas, when Christians prepare for the coming of the Christ Child. Homes and churches are decorated with religious symbols, poinsettias and candles calling to mind the birth of Jesus in a manger. In the advent wreath the purple

candles are used to signify the preparation for the birth and the fifth candle, which is normally lighted on Christmas day is white, for the purity of Christ. In making the wreath, individual candleholders or a cylindrical piece of styrofoam with holes for candles are used. Evergreen boughs, the green representing life in winter, or dried flower arrangements are added to the wreath. The greenery comes from theSauttic religion. A Family Time Rev. Paul Fulp, pastor at Milford United Methodist Church, reflects back to last year when the advent wreath was situated next to the fireplace in their former home. On Sunday evening his family would gather at the wreath where a small worship service would be held. The material Rev. Fulp used would come from a Sunday School lesson with litanies and scripture verses also. Each child would take part in the service and the youngest child would light the candles. Following the service the family

would sing Christmas Carols the children had chosen. In the Fulp advent wreath, ne stays with the traditional four purple candles symbolizing penitence and royalty. Each of the candles has a theme Preperation, Love, Joy and Service. Also one year Rev. Fulp made five different banners to hang symbolizing the themes of the candles with pictures. When it came time for the final candle to be lit on Christ’s birth. Rev. Fulp stated the family would gather around and before exchanging gifts, the white and final candle was lit, putting Christ back into Christmas.
Try a little kindness during the holiday season When you see the first gleam of the tinsel and the ornaments on the shelves of your favorite store, this signals the start of the holiday season with all the gift-giving and festivities. It is also the time to put yourself into the spirit of the season, by improving your manners wherever you go. Whether behind the wheel of your car or standing in line in a crowded store, try to exhibit a little more patience toward everyone you meet. This will be easier to do if you take the time to go to Church, where you will be reminded of what the Christmas season is all about. With enough practice, you may find your new spirit of love and kindness becoming a year-'round habit instead of merely a holiday special; and that as a result, people will be nicer than ever to you.

The real part of Christmas is the giving, for God gave His only Son and in keeping with that theme of giving on Christmas the children’s department <rf the Bethel Church of the Brethren, Milford, has been working on the Heifer Project: The project will come to a close on Sunday, Dec. 2, the first Sunday of advent, when the children will bring wool bags filled with pennies, nickles and dimes saved for the project. The project was started in November and each Sunday there was a special item worked on in connection with the project. Such items as puppets, music, and poetry were used with the children to get across the idea of giving. The church as a group has been included in the project and families are encouraged to participate. Mrs. Raymond Hoover, Milford, Sunday school superintendent for the children’s department, stated the parents of the children have helped tremendously in helping the children understand the idea of giving and caring. She also added that the children have been excited about it and have talked about how they have saved their money from work they have done. Throughout the rest of December slides of missions in the United States will be shown along with the crafts made by the Indians out of wool. The concept of imagining how the money from the project will be shared with a mission in the United States has been carried throughout the project. Mrs. Hoover stated that the church has been informed of the Heifer Project missions through a film strip presentation entitled “Each one Helps” which states the mission of the church is to reach out. In order for one lamb to be purchased by the Milford church, approximately SIOO-125 is needed for a yearling lamb and it is hoped that at least this amount will be reached if not more. Heifer Project Dan West, a Middlebury farmer, began the Heifer Project in 1944 as a non-profit, non-
