Warriors lose opener to Carroll
ByROBERTCARLSON The Wawasee Warriors opened the 1979-80 basketball campaign with an 83-78 loss to a more experienced Carroll team. The Chargers headed by Coach Kent Lochmuller and eight seniors held the lead from midway in the second quarter but were not able to put the game away until .the final seconds. Warrior coach Mike Jones got outstanding performances from senior guard Bart Bowser and junior guard Tom Troup, who combined for 44 points. When asked to comment on his squad’s first game. Coach Jones stated, “They beat us on the shots they had to take. We are inexperienced and may be outplayed a lot this year, but not out hustled. These kids have done everything I’ve asked of them. I'm real proud, they are a great bunch of kids.” The opening minutes contained several errors by both teams, as they warmed to the new season. The first quarter ended with Carroll up by two and the cold shooting Warriors held close by three Troup steals. The second quarter belonged to Carroll as they exhibited their fast break which proved to be the difference in the game. Three Charger fast break baskets by Ken Stahlhut, Mike Didion and Mike McComb resulted in an eight-point lead which was the biggest of the half. In all, Carroll had five fast break scores in the second period and went in at the half with a 40-33 lead. Jeff Long, Wawasee's sophomore forward, found the range in the third quarter, scoring many of his 19 points in this period. Carroll’s balanced scoring and quick transition from defense to offense continued to plague the Warriors, ending the third quarter 65-55.

Solid defense in the backcourt and timely outside shooting by Bowser, enabled the Warriors to close the gap in the fourth quarter. A steal and basket by Troup brought the margin to three points with 5:38 remaining. The teams traded baskets, then two free throws by Jeff Long cut the margin to two points. A clutch basket by senior Kim Stahlhut put the Chargers up again by four points. The teams traded baskets, but a traveling violation
gave the ball to Wawasee with 40 seconds left. Wawasee’s Ken Paulus made one of two free throws but a quick Charger basket put the game out of reach. Carroll’s balanced scoring attack had five players in double figures, led by seniors Mike Didion with 21 points and Jim Krempel with 19 points. The junior varsity contest was won by Wawasee 42-40 on two Jay Auer free throws with 12 seconds left. Box scores follow: WAWASEE FG FT PF PT T. Troup 7 6 3 20 M. Brannock 0 0 1 0 K.Stichter 10 2 2 K. the idea was originally suggested by Don Arnold, school superintendent for the Lakeland Community Schools. Arnold felt that with a new facility it should be made accessible to the community and a basketball program for adults was just one way. The turnout for the first year of the program has been outstanding according to Terry Frank, supervisor and organizer of the program since the completion of the new facility. Both men also stated that, when the registrations came in it was a matter of shutting off the deadline. This year there are 16 teams with approximately 12 players on each team. The rules and regulations will be the same as Indiana High School Athletic Association rules and IHSAA officials will be used during the games. The only difference in the rules from the IHSAA are: The time clock will be stopped only on time outs and foul shots and it will not be stopped on out-of-bounds. unless the official signals for the clock to stop. During the last two minutes of the game the clock will be stopped on every whistle. This year the turnout for the adult basketball program has been men on all 16 teams. It is hoped that eventually there will be women’s teams participating in the program in the next several years. There is no restrictions as to who may participate in the program, according to Frank, but if the leagues become to numerous restrictions will be made. Also, it is not a requirement for the teams to have a sponsor as long as they pay the registration fee, although, many of the teams have acquired sponsors to pay for the registration fee or to provide uniforms. The only nights the team* are allowed to play are Monday and Tuesday evenings, since these are the only two evenings one of the gyms are available. Wysong stated that the game schedules are - worked around other activities at the high school. There is a minimum of two games a night and a maximum of eight games per evening. The main gym is divided into two courts and the auxiliary gym, which can be divided into three courts, will have two courts available. Most of the evenings there are four courts a night being used with eight games that evening. The first game begins at 6:45 p.m. and the second game begins at 7:45 p.m. There is a limited spectator area available for those
who would want to watch the teams play.
