cross, as shown in the accompanying illustration. Have the youngsters draw simple shapes such as bells, candy canes and drums on construction paper, filling in the shapes with crayon, on both sides. (You can also add glitter with glue, if you wish.) Tape string in various lengths to each decoration, and tie to hangers. Finish the project with a big bow and hang it high for a merry, mobile reminder of the holiday season!
ADULTS EAT AT SCHOOL — A number of adults in the Lakeland community took advantage of National Education week to eat at school last week. The above photos show cafeteria workers filling trays and youngsters enjoying their meal.
Christmas Customs from Other Lands
Beautiful Christmas traditions reflect the ancestral legacy of many nations. The meaning and joy of this special holiday survives most fully through these treasured ethnic customs. in Sweden, the Christmas season begins December 13th, the feast of Saint Lucy, with a festive cake and coffee breakfast. The treat is served by a young girl, dressed to resemble the young patron — complete with lighted crown. A more complete meal, called a Wilia, is served to break a pre-Christmas fast in French homes. The banquet table is decorated with straw and made to resemble a manger, and a vacant place is set in honor of the Christ Child. The Nativity is also re-

created in Italian homes where a colorful tableau is set in a place of honor during the holidays. This “Preasepio” is displayed until the feast of the Epiphany, when the Figures of the three Kings are added and small gifts exchanged. In Mexico, such gifts and delicious sweets are contained inside a colorful paper ornament called a pinata. Its breaking brings to an end a Christmas Eve celebration of children’s parades and paper mache magic. Birds and cattle are remembered in a special way at Christmastime by Norwegian families. A decorative outdoor “Christmas tree” is made from a shaft of grain and set outside, so as to feed the feathered friends which remain during the cold, winter season. Also,
special fodder is given to cattle through the duration of the holy season. A “Christmas watch” is kept by Danish families with 4 the help of a special, holiday candle. The candle is divided into 24 days, each representing one day before Christmas. The candle is burned for one hour each evening and is blown out by the youngest child in the family. These, and other international traditions add so much to the meaning and happiness of Christmas. Such customs remain as. constant reminders to all peoples that there is no celebration quite as wonderful as that of the birth of Christ.
