Music Enhances Christmas Season

What would Christmas be like without music? It's hard to imagine celebrating the holiday season without the strains of “Silent Night" or “Joy to the World” expressing the wonder and hope we feel at Christ's birth. Fortunately, we have music to enhance the holidays, and it's been present since that very first Christmas. when the heavenly host performed their extraordinary “Christmas Concert’’ for some awestruck shepherds in the hills near Bethlehem. Since that night, there have been countless carols written, cantatas composed, and popular songs written about Christmas.

The Spirit of Christmas

Rather than be caught up in the many meaningless chores of Christmas, why not let some of them go undone and concentrate your efforts on the true meaning of Christmas. Immediately after Thanksgiving, before the “extras” of Christmas planning Confuse and wear you down, start dispensing love and largesse, and perhaps the custom will snowball into the New Year! For deep-down satisfaction, show one impulsive off-beat bit of kindness for those who are less fortunate than you. It might be a gesture such as inviting a group of foreign students to the house for doughnuts and Christmas music; or inviting the regular baby-sitter to lunch and a matinee — w ithout the chores of dealing with children; or giving a party for some forgotten senior citizen. Christmas Date It wasn’t until 320 A.D. that December 25th was officially designated as Christmas Day. Before then, the celebration of Christmas was assigned to various dates, including January 6th.

Everyone has a holiday preference and chances are, you'll be hearing your own particular musical favorite sometime this season, whether it’s piped into your local department store or performed by the church choir. Some Christmas carols have famous composers such as Adolphe Adam (O Holy Night) and Felix Mendelssohn (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing). Still others are attributed to a traditional melody, such as Deck the Halls, which was inspired by an old Welsh tune, and Coventry Carol, based on a traditional English melody. The anonymous and the famous, the privileged and

This amounts to “giving of one's self.” It costs so little, in effort, in time and in money, we can afford to give ourselves generously. Especially when you can be sure of being repaid with a warm “good” feeling afterward. You carr remind your youngsters and yourself of the true meaning of the season by including a manger scene under the Christmas tree, with all those beautifully wrapped gifts. A New Year’s Wish Let us be joyous, with hope that springs from faith that we and all mankind can work toward a new year with “goodwill to all.” Let us work. And let us pray to that Great Spirit, Father of all, that He will guide us along our path, always. For, as Charles Dana wrote to Virginia seventyfour years ago: “The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see ... Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push aside that (curtain and view) and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond ..

the poor — all manner of composers have endeavored to share their joy in the holiday season with a musical offering of some kind. Christmas music can be reverent and uplifting, or merry and rollicking ... either way, it reflects the magic of this time of the year, in a very special way that both young and old can appreciate.
