The Pope # s visit to America
By REV. PAUL FULP Milford United Methodist Church The mass numbers of people who turned out to see Pope John Paul 11, plus the constant attention of the press, are indications that the Papal office is still a position of much influence — in a time when the church seems to have little influence. I applaud the Pope for recognizing the impact of his leadership role in the world and getting out of the Vatican to exercise that leadership. His speaking out on contemporary issues will certainly challenge minds all over the world scene. I was impressed by two things: That Americans have deep spiritual hungers and respect for

EXPRESS COMING TO LEESBURG — The Leesburg United Methodist Church will be having a Pony Express stewardship campaign the next several weeks. Rev. Ross Richey fascinates Carrie and Brian McClure, children of Pat and Jane McClure, r 2 Leesburg, with a hobby horse. The Pony Express will be away for each member to estimate the amount he or she will be able to give to the church during the coming year in the privacy of their home without “supervision” of someone from the church.

religious authority and that we are looking for moral leadership. One factor, however, is very curious and revealing. While a great number of people are attracted to the Pope and respect him — they don’t mind disagreeing with him or “disobeying” him. The invocation of ‘‘papal infallibility” or the appeal to a rigid tradition has little impact on contemporary people. Inflexible decisions based on yester-year’s situations leave the church in a state of antiquated animation that has nothing at all to do with today. An excellent, illustration is the Pope’s declaration that women cannot be priests because Jesus did not choose women in the male -dominated first century.

With all due respect to his Christian commitment and integrity, the Pope is misguided in his views on women in the priesthood, birth control, divorce, abortion and celibacy. In recent years we have seen people following leaders of all sorts down paths leading to destruction of various sordid varieties. People are hungry for good positive leadership. The church, rather than always being the guardian of the past, needs to be the pioneer of the future — leading the way on the growing edge df life. Every effort must be made to revitalize the church’s efforts and update its approaches — so that we can be the fresh wind blowing in the troubled airs of our day! That’s how I see it — what do you think? Crusade to be held at New Salem Dr. William “Bill” Freed, outstanding pastor, TV and radio speaker, will be the guest Bible speaker at the New Salem Church Os The Brethren, each evening at 7:30 p.m. during November 12 thru 18. Dr. Freed has been pastor of the Broadfording Bible Brethren Church of Hagerstown, Md., for the past 13 years. This great church has grown from an attendance of 150 to 1,000 under the leadership of Dr. Freed, and is ministering to 430 students in a Christian Academy, with advanced training in a Christian College and Bible Seminary. The New Salem Church is located five miles southeast of Milford, on the corner of 900 N and 200E. Rev. Irvin B. Miller, pastor, invites the public to attend these special meetings with sound Biblical preaching and an evangelistic zeal. World Missionary Press holds 18th anniversary dinner Oct. 27
The 18th anniversary dinner for the World Missionary Press, Inc., New Paris, was held Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Fairfield High School gymnasium. This year the event which normally attracts an attendance of approximately 1,000 people was down in attendance with 800 people registered the evening before. A number of Lakeland residents are involved with the work at the World Missionary Press. There is an estimated total of 500 volunteers who spend anywhere from one hour to a whole day working in the binding room. Such groups are retired people, Sunday School classes, youth and men’s groups from various church denominations. Henry Beer and Orvil “Fritz” Kilmer, Milford residents and Otto Beer, New Paris, were among persons who participated in the evening program. Otto Beer is the production foreman at the plant and talked about the production which takes place. Henry Beer gave the invocation and table blessing and Kilmer gave the prayer following the scripture. The North Main Street Mennonite Church Choir, Goshen, provided special music throughout the evening along with a message from Alpha Miller a member of the board. Also speaking during the evening were Vicky Benson, director of Prayer Mobilization on “The Intercessor’s Vision;” Jay Benson, “The Word at Work!” Rose Goodman, vice president of Calvary sets Loyalty Sunday Loyalty Sunday has been set for November 11, by the Every Member Canvass Committee, at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse This will be the day when church members commit their lives in stewardship for the work and mission of Calvary Church in 1980. The committee hopes that every member will be able to give a response and an estimate of his or her giving for 1980 on or before November 11. The projected budget for next year has been agreed upon by the finance committee and the administrative board. Plans for appealing to every member of the congregation to commit himself or herself have been made by the Every Member Canvass Committee. If a member cannot attend on Loyalty Sunday, the committee ask that they bring or mail the card in to the church before that date. Beginning on the afternoon of November 11, callers will visit those who were not heard from.

Nature of the Work The World Missionary Press produces and mails millions of free scripture booklets in many languages as a worldwide missionary service ministry for Jesus Christ. It is a faith work-, trusting the Lord to send sufficient contributions to meet expenses and workers to keep the books moving. The scripture-by-subject booklets the press distributes have gone into 170 countries by request. As of October 1979 "Help from Above” had been published in 142 languages (nearly 340 more languages have been requested). More than 149 million copies had been produced and booklets were being printed at the rate of 3,208.000 copies per month. Origin While serving in their third term of missionary service in South Africa. Watson and Rose Goodman were called in 1961 to return to America to found the World Missionary Press. They had seen the eagerness of the people to recieve their Scripture-by-subject booklet, “Help From Above” in three African languages and had witnessed the booklet’s effectiveness All scripture booklets are distributed on worldwide mission fields to eager readers, both saved and unsaved, free of charge. Distribution is made impartially, without regard for nationality or denomination, color, or position, wealth or education. Contributions are welcomed from God’s people of any church or mission so that this work of world evangelism can be carried on from strength to strength for the glory of God.
