Wednesday Afternoon Club tours Ruthmere
Members of the Wednesday Afternoon Club enjoyed a tour of Ruthmere. the historic Beardsley mansion in Elkhart, for their October 24 meeting Built in 1908 by Albert R. Additional highlights include two vintage cars and a garage with a huge turntable in the floor . . . to reverse the direction of the cars so that they need not be backed out! A green-house was actually a sort of ”R and R’’ area
where household plants could recuperate between seasons. As a fitting finale, the tour guide, Helen Miller, provided a captivating melody on the unique organ player-piano “combo” which had been custom designed for the Beardsleys. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. W. DeFord Hite, president and Eloise Frevert of Goshen, at whose home refreshments were served following the tour.

There were only six entries, so all entrants received a prize. Those who submitted pumpkins in the contest and their entries were: Clayton Mock and Charles Baldwin. “Preacher:” Peter McFarland, "Nose Trouble;” Jill McFarland, "Winter Warmth;” John Bartman, "Clown:” Steve Hapner, “At Rest:” and Susan Hapner, "Sailor Jim.”

Judy Ferverda president of Room 4-U 4-H By LYNN HATHAWAY The Room 4-U 4-H Club held its October meeting in the home of leader Betty Greider. The meeting was brought to order by President Kay Ferverda. Roll call was taken by Secretary Judy Ferverda. Roll was answered by members naming their favorite dog. Three new members were welcomed into the club. They are Lynn, Beth and Laurie Hathaway. New officers were elected for the coming year. Elephant, Holly Hobby win honors at Milford
An elephant and a Holly Hobby doll won top honors at the Milford Halloween Festival last night (Tuesday). The elephant turned out to be Shawn Krull, son of Mr. and Mrs Hubert Krull and Holly Hobby was Krista Brumbaugh, daugther of Mrs. Judy Brumbaugh. The event is sponsored annually by the Milford Libns, Legion and Auxiliary with award winners receiving cash prizes YOUNGEST ENTRANT Little three-month-old Marcia Harwood, daughter of David and Julia Harwood of Dewart Lake ( r 5 Syracuse) was easily the youngest masked entrant. Dressed as "Tom" in a Tom and Jerry dual entry, little Marcia appeared in all her majesty, suited and painted, in her stroller alongside brother, Daniel, two. as “Jerry.” When the judging was being done and the prizes handed out the little “star” was sound asleep. Another youngster, Luke Sawyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kent Sawyer, also of Dewart Lake, was wide awake during the event. Dressed as a scarecrow and carried in his mother's arms, he didn’t missa thing. Winning first, second and third place honors in the various categories were the following. Laurie Pryor, a graduate of Wawasee High School, pledged Alpha Chi Omega. She is a freshman, majoring in elementary education, and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Charles Pryor of North Webster. Another graduate of Wawasee High School, Elizabeth Runge pledged Pi Bela Phi. She is the daughter of Suzanne Runge, r 2 Syracuse, ano is a freshman majoring in business administration.

Wee Webster Workers elect Judy Ferverda president
Elections of new officers and the addition of five new members highlighted the last meeting of the Wee Webster Workers 4-H Club which was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ferverda, club leaders. Conference Day next Wednesday All Lakeland students in kindergarten through the fifth grade will have a day off next Wednesday, Nov. 7, for parent-teacher conferences. Teachers will meet with parents between the hours of 12 noon and 8 p.m.
